Blaming rape survivors

Victims of "legitimate rape" can't get pregnant because a woman's body will shut down and prevent the pregnancy. Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) actually said that—in other words, he's saying that if a woman does get pregnant, she must not have been raped. Even scarier? He's running—and leading—in the race for Missouri's senate seat.

What he said was bad, but it was hardly a gaffe or poor choice of words. In 2011 he and Rep. Paul Ryan led the push in the House of Representatives to redefine rape as "forcible rape" in order to further restrict rape survivors' access to abortions. As a state senator, Akin questioned whether anti-marital rape laws would be abused by women in messy divorces.

Anyone who doesn't understand basic biology and tries to create more hurdles for rape survivors seeking justice doesn't belong in the United States Congress.

    His comment was so offensive, no matter how you look at it. So does that mean if you are raped and get pregnant that you enjoyed it or WTF is this idiot trying to say.

    So because this ignorant old man managed to reach his level of incompetence in congress, he's now qualified to discuss medical issues?

    And Bryan Fischer, another ignorant old man reached his level of incompetence years ago as head of the American Family Association, agrees with him.

    I wish I could say that this is the only guy in government who speaks so foolishly about a woman's right to make decisions about her own body but he's not. I hope women in this country, especially young women, get out and vote these neanderthals out of office before they do so much damage it will take generations to repair. Obama 2012

    is there a difference between rape and forcible rape? thats a new one for me... and as far as abusing the rape law, that kicks in anytime someone says NO... married or not, at that point it becomes rape if the other person proceeds anyway.

    It's proven everyday, isn't it? Do away with Planned Parenthood, he's basically saying some rapes are OK, wonder if he would say that if his daughter or wife was raped. This guy is another idiot that thinks women are beneath him.

    How can this Rep. Man know what a womans body will and will not do? Could it be no woman has been foolish enough to want to have his baby? (Unfortunately that is likely not the case) What a big dummy! I imagine the United States Congress is full of big dummies. . and worse.
