There are few more reliable forms of conservative stupidity in the United States than racism, and few more obvious manifestations of racism in the United States in 2011 [and today] than birtherism, which Fox News personality Sean Hannity has recently begun to promote on his television show. Birtherism — the claim that President Obama is not really qualified to serve as President of the United States because he was not born in the country — is one of those ideas that is so stupid it becomes difficult to explain why it’s stupid because it’s so hard to understand why anyone believes it. The array of conservative freaks the claim has attracted is a reliable indicator of how stupid it is.
