Biden Calls Himself 'Middle Class Joe' Owns A Mansion

Evil 1 2012/05/17 19:26:04

Joe Biden, speaking in Ohio today, said that he is "tired of being called a 'Middle Class Joe'.''

While it's not clear who actually calls the vice president that, it is clear that his house and finances tell a different story.

Zillow.com, a reliable real estate web site, estimates the worth of Biden's Wilmington, Delaware, home (pictured above) to be a cool $2,856,950. (This does not appear to include the cottage on the Biden estate, which the vice president rents out to the Secret Service for more than $12,000 per year.)

It's not where he came from. He's obviously succeeded in life. The difference is Biden knows what it's like to be middle class, Willard was born with a silver spoon in is mouth and up his..... and wouldn't know what it's like to be a normal person in this country. He didn't have to work for his quarter of a billion dollars which he hides in the Cayman Islands and in Swiss banks.

now he is trying to separate himself from the "middle class"? Wasnt it in 2008 he was being branded as a "blue collar guy"?

Joe's background is definitely middle class but ASIDE from that point why does anybody care.... FDR, JFK were certainly not middle class and are beloved. NIXON and CARTER were and everybody loves to hate one or both of them.... I understand the politics of driving identification with the middle class but the reality is that affinity with the middle class is available to all and alienation from the middle class is also available to all... And at the end of the day, understanding the middle class is NOT the central keystone of presidential success...

Because he's lying, that's why we should care. Do you condone lying to people to bolster their support? How many middle class individuals own $2 million plus mansions and have assets between $250,000 and $866,000? Furthermore FDR, JFK, NIXON, CARTER, REAGAN or any other President in modern history never mad such a ridiculous statement. If he has to lie to the middle class to garner their support then he doesn't deserve it.

He clearly grew up in the middle class and that's where the claim came from... He also maintains friendships from his youth. We are all a product of your upbringing. Nixon attempted to play the middle class thing extensively by the way when running against Kennedy. He's got a claim to the middle class and he's using it... Not effective to me but elections are played both on substance and emotion and this is part of the emotional play and let him use it as far as it goes...

I find his staement to to complete unadulterated political BS. His claim to the middle class was eliminated many years and many zeros ago.

So, in your view, is there a politician on the national stage that has any 'understanding' of the middle class? I don't find it a particularly valuable trait anyway but by definition I think you're exempting all politicians from in anyway claiming any affinity with the middle class.... We may simply have different definitions of relating to the middle class.

I don't think any politician has a true understanding of the middle class (except possible those that are running for and have not yet held office. Or those holding office on a lower level in say small cities and rural townships). But I find it totally unacceptable when one attempts to portray himself as part of the middle class and it is a bold faced lie. All politicians lie, but to do so so blatantly and expect the people to big ignorant enough to go along with the charade is and insult to the voters.

And possibly you are correct in that we may have different definitions of what middle class is. But regardless of our difference of opinions (unless you feel someone making in excess of $500,000 per year and living in a $2 million mansion is middle class) it does not excuse any politician who is far above middle class status to claim he is. Again, doing so is an insult to the voters.

I don't 'buy' that Joe is middle class but I'll point out that both BO and Joe have memories of their middle class (and less than) upbringing and there's nothing 'foul' about reminding people of that. I would hope that people understand how little importance that has. I have Romney issues but none of them centered around his privileged upbringing. Unfortunately much of the electorate responds to that appeal and just like wrapping yourself in the flag or kissing babies doesn't make you a better administrator of government, it's what you do in an election because too few people have any comprehension of policy.

Let them have their memories, just don't lie to the people and use them for political gain. And don't think for one minute Obama had a middle class upbringing because that is far from the truth.

I think many people are starting to wake up. Some of the latest polls have Obama as a more likable individual but those same people polled state they feel Romney will do a better job running the country. That speaks volumes in and of itself. Also just because someone is popular doesn't mean they are competent. I have many friends that I enjoy their company but I would hire them to manage my business.

I agree about likability and competence although a portion of the President's job is inspiring people which is difficult if you're not liked... To further define your polling the majority of the people feel Mitt is better equipped to run the 'Economy'.... On the other polled subjects Obama still holds anywhere from 5 to 30 point leads...As to who would run the economy better I'll assume Mitt actually would pursue the Ryan Plan which is a not a viable option. Simpson-Bowles is an acceptable course and IF Mitt was there, I'd give him a look. Neither candidate's stated economic proposals are attractive to me and I stand with Obama simply because it does less damage. (I'm actually hopeful that BOTH candidates have a 'hidden' economic agenda that they simply understand the electorate won't accept. That may be a vain hope.)
