He says Italy's women are so beautiful they need escorts to avoid rape.

ROME - Premier Silvio Berlusconi sparked outrage Sunday for suggesting that Italy's women were so beautiful they needed military escorts to avoid being raped.

Berlusconi made the comments in response to questions about his proposal to deploy 300,000 soldiers in the streets to fight crime. A series of violent attacks, including a rape in Rome on New Year's Eve and another outside the capital this week, have put pressure on the government to crack down on crime.

But Berlusconi said that, even in a militarized state, crimes like rape can happen. "You can't consider deploying a force that would be sufficient to prevent the risk," the ANSA and Apcom news agencies quoted him as saying. "We would have to have so many soldiers because our women are so beautiful."

Giovanna Melandri of the opposition Democratic Party said Berlusconi's comments were "profoundly offensive," saying the pain of rape could never be joked about in such a way.

Berlusconi, in an effort to explain himself, said he was complimenting Italian women "because there are only about 100,000 people in law enforcement, while there are millions of beautiful women."

He stressed that rape was a serious and "disgraceful" crime. But he added that people should never forget a sense of "levity and good humor" whenever his comments are concerned.

Berlusconi, a billionaire media-mogul-turned politician, has a history of gaffes. He courted controversy when he compared a German politician to a Nazi camp guard and when he said, shortly after 9/11, that Western civilization was superior to Islam.

So what do you think? Was this a backhanded compliment to Italian women, or was it an offensive statement?

It was a poor attempt at humor, nothing more.

It was just a stupid comment made by someone who clearly has a problem framing good analogies or trying to be funny. No need to shoot the guy.

    The man's an idiot.

Grandmothers get raped. Women who are not beautiful get raped. And, yes, it's also true that beautiful women get raped, too.

Rape is not a referendum upon how beautiful some women might be. It's a violent, dehumanizing crime which says far more about the perpetrators than it does about the victims.

It was a compliment and an insult. He shouldn't have used rape because 1)that is a tender subject, 2) it somewhat implies he himself would do it, and 3) it's wrong and that's almost as if giving ppl the go-ahead to do it. The okee-dokey almost. I mean, as a poltical figure in the first place you should just be more careful with your use of words.

The average Italian man is not known for his tact (the men in my family are my proof of that, lol). That said, considering his position, and how every thing he says is broadcast nationally, if not worldwide, he could show just the tiniest bit of common sense. offensiveness masked as humor is still offensive.

And he is an INSULT to Italian women and MEN everywhere. Yuck, why the hell was he ever popular? He's not goodlooking. No Italian man I know would ever consider bleaching his hair and waxing his chest. That's just WRONG!

I think he meant it as a complement. But should have used a better way of saying it.

What I find so offensive about his comment is that it implies the victim, rather than the prepetrator is the root cause of rape.

I think his comments teetered on the line between funny and distasteful. It's mostly innapropriate because of his position in Government, though and that makes it inexcusable.

I agree. If the comment had been made by a name comedian no one would have blinked. However, due to his political standing, it was over the top.

It's a stab at installing at an authoritarian government.
