Bear Euthanized After Eating Canada Murderer: Approve?

British Columbia Environment Minister Terry Lake said that Canada has a policy to euthanize (kill) bears that eat humans because the bears remember the taste of food sources. The bear may attack other humans (who don't deserve to get eaten) in the future. Canada killed a black bear that ate the remains of a convicted murderer that died of natural causes while living in the forest. The murderer, Rory Wagner, had already served a prison sentence.

Should the Canadian government have killed the black bear? The bear didn't do anything "wrong." The bear did not attack a living human -- Wagner had already died before the bear found his body.KTUL-TV is the ABC affiliate in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Too late for this bear ! I do and I don't understand their thinking. A corpse has a distinctly different odor or aroma when compared to a living human. Are they saying the bear makes a connection just through sight? We have bears in Florida and we have the occasional, unintentional "meetings" with critters. Most of the bears we have come in contact with run in the opposite direction. The operative word here is "most". I'm saddened by the bear being put down. You would think they might place it in some type of habitat zoo or something similar.

This makes no sense. I understand killing a "maneater" a bear that goes after humans but this bear did not do that. So now what...they say he will be a maneater cause he ate dead remains and will remember...what ...the smell of human clothes. Dead remains will smell like any other dead remains...they are stupid and this bear should not have been killed.

I love the rhetoric that a bear will remember what humans taste like and will start to hunt humans.

HELL NO..The Bear lives there...Anyone entering the ares where there are bears, should have a stun gun or protection, in case of an unprovoked attack. This was a dead body, hardly tasting or smelling like a live one!

I live a few miles from there. Bears here are very plentiful and the ones that become dependent on urban areas are often problematic in developed areas.

Generally speaking I don't get too concerned about a bear or two being killed (euthanized is the wrong use of the word and means it is humanely dispatched due to a need to end continued pain or slow death) However in the case of this bear it was in a rural setting well away from any urban developed area. It happened to find a bit of carrion which is one of the black bears favorite easy snacks. This time the carrion was not a dead deer but was a dead junkie murderer out of prison on supervised release. Toxicology tests are not yet complete but due to the amount of hard drug paraphenalia found in the car it is likely he OD'd. The bear was not predatory and was merely opportunistic. Will the area need to be sprayed with insecticides to "euthanize any flies or maggots that got in on the meal? What about the ravens who may have pecked on the remains? Terry Lake is a twit politician with about as much credibility in wildlife behaviour as he has in nuclear physics. Now if the bear was caught later hanging out around the local mortuary looking for corpses or cruising fresh funerals at the cemetary maybe that would be a reason to snuff him.

Todays local newspaper reports that the necropsy was completed on the "euthanized" dead junkie eating bear...and they found NO EVIDENCE of human remains in it. They also report they are confident that it is still the right bear!
Good work guys, I feel safer already thinking that if I die while OD'ing on hard drugs on a rural bush road, this pesky bear won't get to lunch on my fetid corpse. Even if it wasn't the right one.

The bear did not kill him. Any animal that is hungry and not much food is available will eat another animal who is already dead. Do not forget that humans are animals therefore we will get eaten also. How come we can go out and slaughter animals for fun but when they eat one of our dead to survive we kill them? It is false that if an animal finds a human ( or any other animal ) dead and eats it that they will start killing that particulate animal ( humans ). It is a story made up for people to go on hunting sprees and be able to falsely justify it.

WOW, who would have thought of this means of ending the days of murderers. Bears surely are cheaper than all those chemicals that seem to be the subject of such litigation
and whining. Are there bears in Texas? Let's try it out next week on any of the two or three executions to be done there.

Life has risks, and bears are one of them. What to do? How about making "feeding stations" where convicted murderers are left for the bears to enjoy? I have my eye on a guy down in Florida that could be available soon for this purpose. Seems that keeping all those killers around for fifty years is not very practical or cost-effective. So, let's feed the bears and solve two problems with just a little imagination.

Well, if the big bear comes to your tent looking for a meal, you have a serious problem that all the conversations here on SH will not prepare you for. The best defense is a large can or two of Wasp Spray - yes, the common spray available at any Walmart or hardware or sports store. Get a big can, keep it in your car (away from any children), as it can also be the best defense against hoodlums or others you might wish to avoid. If you suspect bears in the area, spray a little around your campsite as the odors can be scented by a bear a mile away. Sprayed into the face and eyes, it is a mean thing. Be very careful to not spray it inside your tent or into the wind so that it could get into your eyes or those around you. Cut a hole in the tent if need be to spray a bear nosing
    around your tent.

When I go camping I take along a small "wind chime" and tie it on a limb near the campsite. If a breeze causes the chime to tinkle, all the wildlife within a mile will hear the little noise and know there is something strange to be avoided. Wear a small bell on your backpack, also, when hiking as the sound will warn animals of your approach. It is the surprise to animals that makes them most dangerous - except hungry bears are sometimes just hungry.

Yep, and every Saturday a murderer could be tossed into the cage with the bear and all the visitors could pay extra to witness the results.... worth $50 or so, don't you think? If there were not enough pedophile murderers to keep the bear in vittles, they could add terrorists, then would-be terrorists, maybe then just spousal killers? Lots of food out there.

It killed someone who deserves to be killed, that bear is actually kind of a saviour who deserves to be kept alive.
Even if it develops a preference for human meat, there is still alternate food sources it can live off of, the bear will eat what it's given, it's an animal afterall :)
I'm sure there will be no problem with it, if they keep it alive.
