British Columbia Environment Minister Terry Lake said that Canada has a policy to euthanize (kill) bears that eat humans because the bears remember the taste of food sources. The bear may attack other humans (who don't deserve to get eaten) in the future. Canada killed a black bear that ate the remains of a convicted murderer that died of natural causes while living in the forest. The murderer, Rory Wagner, had already served a prison sentence.
Should the Canadian government have killed the black bear? The bear didn't do anything "wrong." The bear did not attack a living human -- Wagner had already died before the bear found his body.

Save the bear+5Too late for this bear ! I do and I don't understand their thinking. A corpse has a distinctly different odor or aroma when compared to a living human. Are they saying the bear makes a connection just through sight? We have bears in Florida and we have the occasional, unintentional "meetings" with critters. Most of the bears we have come in contact with run in the opposite direction. The operative word here is "most". I'm saddened by the bear being put down. You would think they might place it in some type of habitat zoo or something similar.

Generally speaking I don't get too concerned about a bear or two being killed (euthanized is the wrong use of the word and means it is humanely dispatched due to a need to end continued pain or slow death) However in the case of this bear it was in a rural setting well away from any urban developed area. It happened to find a bit of carrion which is one of the black bears favorite easy snacks. This time the carrion was not a dead deer but was a dead junkie murderer out of prison on supervised release. Toxicology tests are not yet complete but due to the amount of hard drug paraphenalia found in the car it is likely he OD'd. The bear was not predatory and was merely opportunistic. Will the area need to be sprayed with insecticides to "euthanize any flies or maggots that got in on the meal? What about the ravens who may have pecked on the remains? Terry Lake is a twit politician with about as much credibility in wildlife behaviour as he has in nuclear physics. If the concern is that bears remember the taste of food sources would the bear have been more of a danger to dead Volkswagen Jetta owners? After all the "sou...

Now if the bear was caught later hanging out around the local mortuary looking for corpses or cruising fresh funerals at the cemetary maybe that would be a reason to snuff him.
Good work guys, I feel safer already thinking that if I die while OD'ing on hard drugs on a rural bush road, this pesky bear won't get to lunch on my fetid corpse. Even if it wasn't the right one.
and whining. Are there bears in Texas? Let's try it out next week on any of the two or three executions to be done there.
around your tent.
When I go camping I take along a small "wind chime" and tie it on a limb near the campsite. If a breeze causes the chime to tinkle, all the wildlife within a mile will hear the little noise and know there is something strange to be avoided. Wear a small bell on your backpack, also, when hiking as the sound will warn animals of your approach. It is the surprise to animals that makes them most dangerous - except hungry bears are sometimes just hungry.
Even if it develops a preference for human meat, there is still alternate food sources it can live off of, the bear will eat what it's given, it's an animal afterall :)
I'm sure there will be no problem with it, if they keep it alive.
