A Brevard Community College math instructor is being investigated by the college for allegedly using class time to urge students to vote for President Barack Obama and for distributing campaign material that says “I pledge to vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket."

Associate Professor Sharon Sweet, 58, requested and was granted an unpaid leave of absence Monday morning as senior college officials look into the matter. Sweet did not return phone messages or an email seeking comment Monday.

A parent complaint Thursday initiated the investigation, and college officials have since received dozens of emails and phone calls expressing concern, BCC spokesman John Glisch said. The incident sparked outrage online, where it was mentioned by conservative bloggers and posted to various websites.

“The college takes this policy extremely seriously,” Glisch said, referring to a policy that prohibits employees from soliciting support for a political candidate during working hours or on college property.

“We are a nonpartisan, public institution,” he said. “It is very important that all of our faculty and staff act in that manner at work and while they’re on campus.”

Glisch said senior college officials investigating the complaints will interview the roughly 100 students in Sweet’s classes. In addition, college provosts are reiterating the college’s policy to employees.

She's a math teacher, not a poli sci teacher. She has no business discussing politics in her classroom.

Not sure the circumstances but i would guess as an employee there is policy against it. She should have known better than that.

I do not believe the college went far enough. She should have been fired. End of discussion. Cause there is no doubt that had the prof, been a conservative having the kids pledge to vote for romney the matter would be over already in the termination of the conservative professor. Especially if it had been a white guy..............

This is an ethic issue of most liberal progressives. She is wrong and should be terminated. If another instructor were supporting Romney she'd have a cow and scram foul at the top of her lungs.

Politics in the class room.... as a discussion in a relevant (government-economics) class yes, but not for voting purposes... a math class???? no place in hell. Also students in college PAY for their classes, not for the instructor to give political speeches, also... if a student were to express an opinion that differs from hers... would they fear or need to fear retaliation in their grade? While I will admit I am NOT an Obama supporter, I would feel the same way no matter who the candidate was, this, doesn't belong in the class room.

(And after reading the whole thing.... it seems the college agrees. She broke the rules, not just common sense.)

Teachers need to leave their political beliefs at the door. This is not what students and/or their parents are paying for, they can make up their own minds.

This fools pledge requirement may have also violated Florida election law.

Section 104.31, of Title IX in chapter 104, states that “no officer or employee of the state… shall… use his or her official authority or influence for the purpose of interfering with an election or nomination of officer or influencing another person’s vote or affecting the result thereof.”

It could get interesting for this woman. It's kind of a shame that her career may be ruined but hey she made her bed. Some people simply don't think before they act and the price must be paid.

I saw where someone posted it was not just a state violation but also Federal and could cost the school Federal operating dollars. Pretty sure she lost her job over it. It's one thing to have an opinion, as stupid as hers is.... but to try pushing it on others, especially people you have control over (students), is just plain stupid. I would think an educator at a college level would have more common sense then that.

Public schools are not the ideal location for spreading your specific opinions. They are for showing all political opinions (with out bias) and letting you develop your own opinion if at all even discussing politics.

Did she urge these students in the classroom to vote for President Obama? If so, she is in violation of discussing politics in the work place. If she did this in the privacy of her own time, then she has no problem.

We can't bring God in, but they want their little god to be elected again. So sad to see how desperate they are.
