Barclays bank CEO Diamond resigns amid scandal

London (CNN) -- The chief executive of Barclays, one of the world's largest banks, resigned Tuesday in the wake of a scandal, the bank announced.

Bob Diamond's resignation is effective immediately, the bank said.

Diamond has long been a controversial figure, and has been a vocal backer of huge bonuses for bankers.

"It's about pay for performance," he told CNN earlier this year, calling bonuses "rewards for success."

The bank announced the resignation of Chief Operating Officer Jerry del Missier hours after Diamond's. Chairman Marcus Agius resigned on Monday, but in the wake of Diamond's resignation, Agius returned as chief executive on Tuesday.

I wonder if this is all part of the "green light" ordeal? Anyone know the ties to Romney yet? This could get very dirty indeed!

These are coming thick and fast. One must wonder whether the whole international banking system really is a house of cards.

A man who is the Chief Executive of this company which so happens to be a bank sits in front of MP's and says he has only recently discovered the goings on with in his bank. Well either he is lying or he is completely incompetent, which ever it is he sure has hell does not deserve a 20 million pound hand shake or bonus. They are a disgrace, any other Chief Executive of a company would be investigated.

Disgusting, all they will do is pay some fines, shuffle a few suits, promise to be good boys and then continue with crony business as usual.
