The point is why should they be left in churches if they aren't a religious institution?
The example I used, specifically /Ancient/ Greece didn't have religion let alone their marriages solemnized by a religious ceremony. Two people decided they were going to be married and that was that. There wasn't even always a ceremony.
Nor are all marriages solemnized by a religious ceremony even today. Hence a civil marriage, you know, that document you sign so the government recognizes you're married and you get all the fun benefits that come from that. Yeah, not religious either.

Why are we even arguing about this? Civil unions for all would be a good compromise. Or do you not think compromise is a good thing sometimes?

Take the legal benefits away from a marriage and I'm all for civil unions for all.
But I don't think that one should have to 'compromise' by not being given equal rights and instead just given a cheap cop-out.

The point is, when good people strongly disagree about something like this, the best thing to do in order to continue to have a civilized society is to come to some kind of compromise. If religious people would be willing to give up state-sanctioned marriage and instead agree to state-sanctioned civil unions, with all of the benefits formerly given in marriage, why can't the gay community agree to the same? Each side would be giving up something. It isn't a "cheap cop-out"...it's simply finding a way to live together peacefully.

That would be ideal, but I can't see religious people being willing to give up the name of 'marriage'.
There was this much conflict over interracial marriage... sometimes things just have to be challenged and we need to put things through and move on.

I'm religious, and I would be willing. And I know many other religious people who would be willing too. Wouldn't it be at least worth trying instead of this constant, endless bickering?

Ah, my mistake I was under the impression you meant marriage would stay, but that civil unions would be offered as a compromise.
If the legal benefits are taken from marriage, and in order to gain them everyone needs a civil union then fair enough. As long as everyone is entitled to the same benefits and the same thing, be it marriage or civil unions, then s'all good.

Cool. See, if we could talk this through and come to an agreement on a compromise, wouldn't it be great if our politicians could do the same on this issue? I suspect that if it were framed the right way, alot of people would be willing to lay down their swords and put this issue to rest. Thanks for the good conversation.

And same to you, was a nice chat.

It is today just as much of a legal agreement as a ceremony, and even then it came long before christianity and was re-defined many times. So why not now?
  • Iamfree William... 2012/05/11 05:33:02

If the majority of residents of a state choose to redefine it, I suppose that it their right to do so. I just don't see the point in alienating a large segment of the population when the simplest solution is simple to go to civil unions.

Yes, because "separate but equal" worked so well before.

Who said anything about "separate but equal"? My thought is that if civil unions were the method of legalizing all partnerships between two lover, no one would be left out. Then if people want to have a religious "marriage" ceremony afterward, they could if their faith recognized such things. How is "separate but equal" involved here?
  • Inquisi... Iamfree 2012/05/11 17:43:18

Marriage licences are done by the state, not the church, and church and state are separate, therefore religion has no say on who can and cannot marry.

Are you paying any attention at all to what I said, not once but two or three times? I advocate for state-sanctioned civil unions for all, with religious "marraige" ceremonies to follow at churches if people with.
  • Inquisi... Iamfree 2012/05/11 20:35:37

But 'marriage' is in the state's hand, not only the church.

I'm asking you one more time, please go back and read what I've written. I am suggesting that the state should go strictly to legal civil unions for everyone. Then people could follow up with religious marriage ceremonies through their churches if they wish.
  • Inquisi... Iamfree 2012/05/11 21:18:38

"Marriage" is not a word that can be claimed by religion... I fully understood what you wrote.

That is your opinion. I have a different opinion. And since that is the case for most of America (differing opinions), why can't we just eliminate the problem by going strictly to civil unions for legal purposes, and save "marriage" for religious purposes. Everyone's problem would then be solved, wouldn't it? This seems like a very reasonable compromise to me.

In that case I would agree, replace the legal part of marriage with civil unions and make the marriage part a religious ceremony completely separate from the legal civil union. Sounds great to me!

Religion should have no freedom to dictate who can and cannot have a marriage ceremony.

I trust this is a distraction; noise; slight of hand. How will all the media hype on this subject resolve any the core financial issues confronting us? How does this address foreclosures, student debt, meaningful job creation, failing infrastructure, over priced medical coverage, bankrupt local state federal governments, exploding public sector unfunded benefits and salaries? No this is a media play.

Marriage always was, is and should be between a man and a woman. If you doubt where the country is just look up the election results in North Carolina Tuesday.
