It was the democrats who fought to keep segregation in tack. The GOP fought for the Civil Rights Movement. However Marriage is defined as one man & one woman and the majority of Americans voted to keep it that way.

As far as Gay marriage, the American people are split 50 50 on that. At one time it was over whelming against Gay marriage. So America is evolving on this issue!!!!

In the beginning perhaps marriage was a purely religious institution, but not anymore. Society has co-opted it and made it a societal convention that is the bedrock of families. Families are the most important institution in America.



Marriage does not just involve 2 people anymore. It involves a great deal. With recognition from the state and federal government marriage carries with it a great deal of rights and benefits. These benefits cost tax payer money. Therefore, in a way, taxpayers are funding marriage benefits and should be able to stipulate who they afford those benefits to based on who they beleive will be of greatest worth to society as a whole.



This is to a single man and a single woman. It has been thus for thousands of years.



Many of the benefits are provided with children in mind. Many of them are to support a dependant spouse etc... This has nothing to do with how some people choose to spend their lives, it simply states that the state will not fund and provide benefits for their alternative lifestyle. That is all it says.



The majority of America, while content to let homosexuals live the way they desire, are not ready to fund their alternative lifestyles via marriage benefits. That is not bigotry or hatred. It is democracy.

I support gay marriage 100%. I don't see how someone elses marriage effects everyone else. Haven't people ever heard the sayings mind your own business? Or worry about yourself? Like some on. To some people marriage isnt a big deal.. but to others its the next step in a relationship.. its where a couple becomes one... I honestly don't see the big deal.. but maybe thats because I go to a highschool where your accepted. No matter your sexuality, race, religion, background and so on.. I think people are taking it a little to far when laws come in and make marriage illegal anyway... I'm a person. Whether I be gay, straight, bi, lesbian or transgender... A person is always a person no matter who they are or what they've done.. Also, you hear about all these homeless children without parents.. Yet people try to negotiate saying straight couples are better parents.. If so.. Then why so many kids with parents who go out and do drugs, or prostitute and such? At least a gay couple would adopt one of those homeless children and give them a home.. someone to love and care for them.

My objection to gay marriage is hypothetical:if everyone were gay, who'd make the babies? Mankind would become extinct eventually. Maybe this is why people tend to look down on gays and gay marriage. But then again, to say everyone's gay is like saying everyone's a crook, which is simply not true.

About 10% of every species is gay... that's not likely going to increase, unless evolution tries to make us stop producing so many babies.
