    He said/she said.

He is absolutely correct on one thing though, they need to be giving people in wheelchairs first floor rooms.

Both sides seem to slant the story in their favor, I would suspect the truth lies in the middle.

So now a motel that does not provide bell service is expected to possess a litter and to keep at least three employees on duty at all times so that two are available to carry it?

actually, the Sargent merely wanted help with his belongings, he had to throw them down the stairwell. If you are in the business of lodging people I believe there is a minimum level of service required, if that is too much to expect then get out of the business.

even fully self service gas stations must provide assistance to handicapped, if you think that is a travesty, I am sorry for you.

I agree that this man got too upset--but, to me this guy is a hero and was mistreated by the staff at this hotel. Sorry to say but there are too many people not willing to help. I am not disabled and I have encountered them before. They need to change their attitude.

    Oops, didn't want that vote.......

    A couple of points here

One: whether the guy is a veteran or not should have zero bearing on the issue.
Two: we shouldn't automatically believe his version of events over hers.
Three: nobody forced him to drag himself down the stairs.

Without having access to adequate information I cannot make a determination whether the employee should be disciplined or not.

Always the voice of reason, David. How refreshing! And I agree. Veteran status should have no bearing at all.

Thank you BlytheSpirit. I try to be objective and reasonable, although I do fail in that at times. I'm glad someone agrees that his veteran status should be irrelevant. A person is a person in my mind and everyone should be seen in the same light. It kind of makes me sad that if this had happened to someone not a veteran it wouldn't even be a story.

You're right. If the disabled guy had been gay for instance, all of those calling for the employee to be fired would instead be calling for her to be promoted. Sometimes I'm so disappointed in my countrymen.

Investigate the situation. I wouldn't fire the employee because I'm pretty sure a hard lesson has been learned here. But, something needs to be done.

Um, her version of events is she asked what she could do for him, and he hung up on her. His version is that she laughed at him. So let's assume when he said he's in a wheelchair, she laughed involuntarily and then asked what she could do to help. Until they can get a version of events that matches up, no, she shouldn't get fired.

Of course she is going to pretty up the situation, she laughed at a paralyzed vet. There is a special place in hell for those people. Right next to chronic double parkers and people that take a penny, but never leave a penny.

You "know" she laughed at him and don't see any possibility that he just 'uglied' up the situation? There is a special place in hell for people who make judgments of others without anything to base it on.

I am basing it on his version and hers. He made it very clear that he wanted to go down, and her asking him what she was supposed to do about it was a very bitchy line. I have no problem believing that she also laughed. Her statement was clearly skipping over a few things.

Without having the conversation recorded for us all to hear for ourselves what was said, neither one of us has the slightest clue what the content of the conversation was. I don't know, and I'm not going to make any judgment on which version is more accurate. Likely they are both embellished. But I am certainly not going to make a presumption of honesty and integrity just because somebody is military, disabled or both.

Both stories match, sounds like he overreacted. So no, I don't think she should.
But all I have to work on is two biased first hand accounts, a proper investigation would be needed. Not that I can think who'd do that.

this needs to be investigated very thoroughly. They need to change there policies on where they have the handicapped rooms and they need sensitivity training on how to assist people with disabilities. The firing might need to go much higher up the chain of command.

Not on the basis of this article, there should be an investigation and the system should take its course, but if she truly laughed and asked what should she do, that seems very insensitive. Training would help. The Sargent seemed pretty rational to me, you do what you have to do, and he did it, but the business was not prepared to assist him.
