Aussie School Cages Autistic Kids: Done For Safety Or Simply Inhumane?

An Australian public school is under criticism for placing autistic children in fenced enclosures. Seven Hills West public school would place autistic children in a fenced enclosure with one tree, a bench, and a dirt floor. The school board has defended the decision to place the children in the pens, and contend that it was done only for safety reasons.

They also claim that it was done because parents raised safety issues. The school has 52 students with special needs. However, critics of the pens say that the conditions of the pens are horrendous and inhumane.

Is the school only thinking about safety when placing these children in pens? Or is it truly inhumane to place children with special needs in a fenced enclosure?

Tough issue here. What folks don't realize is that these kids have hidden talents that can be discovered and developed. Having them watch TV with captioning on can (and has) taught autistic kids to read. Unfortunately, proper training for these potentially useful members of society costs money. Fences are cheaper.

Its perfect, most of them are complete lunatics so a cage is perfect until they get brain surgery or whatever they need to get fixed

Its smart, most of these kids are complete nut bags and for safety they need to be isolated from humans

i believe unless youve had a few autistic kids under your care you shouldnt answer the question because theres no way to know how to handle the situation if youve never been in similar ones as for a fenced in yard big whoop putta few swings and a slide maybe a jungle gym and let them play any kid would be uber happy
safe from strangers and them running away

If the school is not educating these children, then they are not in the business of education. If these autistic kids are being segregated from the other kids in a caged are, then this school must be apart time zoo.

Just about every school in America has a fence around the playground area. When dealing with autistic children you need a fence or a adult per child to make sure they don't wonder off as they are prone to do.

excuse me, but you obviously didn't take a long enough look at the 'pic'. It's not a 'play ground', it's a PEN. Like where you place DOGS!

its a fence around a yard, I have already posted that it should be another kind of fence but We don't even know if this is the whole thing or not.

I have a four-year-old son with PDD-NOS or atypical autism. These children have no sense of their own safety and are prone to wander off without regard to possible dangers. Unless this school has an individual attendant for each child, the fences are the only answer to the possible consequences of taking a large group of autistic children outdoors. It's not inhumane. Just the opposite. The alternative would be keeping them locked inside. What kind of a life is that?

come on... really? just have a classroom special for these kids. i understand why people might want to keep them separate but they are people, not animals and deserve the same conditions as everyone else. just give them there own classroom/rooms and everyone is happy for the most part.

It just depends on how it is being done. I have autistic kids and their play areas are fenced off from the others.

If they are well taken care of with food and water, and if they are kept clean, then I would say it's a safety issue.

You would think that educators with college degrees and paychecks to match would be able to come up with a more user-friendly protective area than this. They're either too lazy to be creative or too uncaring--and, possibly, downright sadistic--to do so.

Whatever happend to Proper Adult Supervision!! if the School has 52 special needs students then they should hire more teachers that specialize with those students.

It's not like autistic kids are a menace. =/ And if it's for their own safety, then the school has even more underlying issues.

Thats not always the case some autistic children can become violent for little reason that make little or no sence to others. I was talking to a friend who is the father of an autistic child on the front porch when the child 15 years old charged out the door with a frying pan in hand. His mother grabbed him from behind and his father and I were able to get him under control after about a 5 minute rage he said he thought I was there to take him away.

Oh. :( well, I don't think locking anyone up in a cage will really solve anything...

It's not a cage it's a fenced in play area and if you read the post its only used for the kids who don't respond to verbal comands from the teachers. Geeez you have to look past the stupid headline and read the post.
  • ofbrain... Dnar March 16, 2010 05:41:09
    ofbraindoiLack
But it mentioned "safety reasons" so that's what I was addressing. I don't believe not responding to verbal commands could be, in most situations, addressed as a safety issue.
