Day by day, hour by hour, the tension is building. NASA’s mega-mission
to Mars and delivery of the Curiosity rover could be a smashing success …
or just smashing.

The Mars Science Laboratory’s 1-ton Curiosity rover
is factory-equipped with science gear to delve into whether Mars ever
was — or might be today — an eco-friendly setting able to sustain
microbial life.

A seven-minute, terrorizing plunge
through the planet’s atmosphere awaits the spacecraft. MSL’s Curiosity
rover is scheduled to touch down at Gale Crater at 10:30 p.m. PDT on
Aug. 5 (1:30 a.m. EDT, 0530 GMT, Aug. 6).

Please check out the link and the video.

I've been looking forward to this event since launch. I plan to be up and "watching" the best I can. hopefully NASA TV will be streaming the event live.

This will either be an outstanding accomplishment for NASA and America or an unmitigated disaster.

Right now, Curiosity right now is Schrodinger's Cat, it's both alive and dead, but the box will be opened very soon and we will know.

God bless NASA, it's people and the American citizens that have the spark for exploration.

Very sad that Obama is KILLING NASA too... won't it be nice to have a President that LOVES America instead of one that wants to DESTROY us?

What really gets my goat is that in 1969 I watched the first man step foot upon the moon and my hopes soared... Now 43 years later we still haven't gone any farther, just think for a min how little technology we had back then compared to what we got today, I just do not understand why we have not set foot on Mars or started colonizing either the moon or Mars..

yep I've seen it, but one more time won't hurt a thing.

The deployment of the parachute at Mach 1 is the first real test. It's only been tested in a wind tunnel on earth.

Next up, Sky crane. never tested only simmed.

I'm sending it positive thoughts though, It's going to work and it will be awesome!

I wish I could be on the surface and watch it happen

Whew....I'm torn on this one. Mars is kinda the "roach motel" of the galaxy. Hardware goes in.....never comes out....and is never heard from again.

When you think that only 30% of the missions from Earth to Mars have succeeded, it seems like quite a gamble. This nation is not very optimistic at this time in history. This had BETTER work....the last thing we need is another $2.5B light-speed faceplant like we had with the Mars Polar lander.

Oh I agree. we do NEED this. Of course Obama will take credit for it and if it fails, he'll blame Bush and NASA.

As far as the 30%, I'd bet on us over the Russians. Considering the new sky crane is untested, I think our odds are going to be slim. But, I have hope and faith in the brains of NASA, JPL and the contractor. Besides, My name and my families along with about 30K others is riding on a chip on the rover, so I hope it makes it.

This will probably surprise everyone: NASA's budget never has been a real budget-buster in the grand scheme of things. Not even in the high-budget days of Projects Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. And these missions are some of the most successful they've run to date.

you are correct as usual. NASA is a tiny sliver of hair on the hairy butt of the budget. I've always considered it money well spent compared to some of the ignorant stuff the government has funded and studied.

Well I consider the "costs" on the war on poverty ridiculous. I consider half a billion on a solar company that went belly up ridiculous.

It better work? really? or what, vote democrat to kill NASA completely?
  • TheTailor Farnsworth 2012/08/02 19:54:12
    TheTailor
It better work or it should be dealt with like any other government waste. The amount of money spent is high, and we aren't talking about the "war on poverty", whatever that is nor Solyndra. Those are red herrings.

Have YOU forgotten "there's a $16 TRILLION debt", it was 5 before Obama took office.

"don'tanswer to my posts at all." Don't answer mine either dick cheese.

you are dismissed, go play....wear your headgear.
