Atheists Wash Florida Road Christians Anointed With Oil

★~DoctorWhoGuru~★ 2012/03/18 19:22:39

County Road 98 in Polk County, Fla., was scrubbed today by a group of atheists who are protesting the "Polk Under Prayer" campaign, supporters of which poured olive oil on the road last year in an anointment ceremony.

"Mainly we want this to be a safe haven for folks who want to raise their families," explained Polk Under Prayer organizer, Dr. Richard Geringswald, according to ABC News affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa. "Asking God's protection from ne'er do wells and evil doers."

Ellen Beth Wachs, the president of Humanists of Florida Association and Atheists of Florida, said that she feels unwelcome as an atheist in the county.

"This anointment ritual was to call out the angels to check each car that entered the county, to make sure they were Christian, and if they weren't Christian, they would either follow Christian beliefs or get put in jail," Wachs told ABC News.

If it is a public road the PUP campaign created a public hazzard and violated the separation of church and state.

Why the hell do people who say there is no God give a damn if a road is blessed or not?? Absurd, if you do not believe, then it does not matter?? Are they afraid that drops of holy water will burn off their tires or that their car/truck will be come a Christian? Geez, can they get anymore irrelevant?

PUP which is full of County Officials said this :

Tim Williams and Pastor Frank talk about the PUP project that Tim has been called to carry out. PUP stands for Polk Under Prayer. It's objective is to place Holy Angels at all roads that lead into or out of Polk County. A strip of anointed oil has been placed over all lanes of highway at the county line and a prayer has been given at each location asking God to have angels inspect every vehicle that travels into or out of this county and to bring under conviction to those who seek evil and we asked God to bring them to a state of submission and repentance. If they will not submit to God's way of living, then the prayer is to have them incarcerated or removed from the county. We pray salvation for each person and the full knowledge of Jesus Christ as Savior. We are asking God to make His presence known when each person crosses this annointed line.

That's the way American Law is written and if you don't like it then you can go to a Muslim country where they get away with being bigots but it's not going to work here in America! :)

If atheists truly don't believe in any higher being than what's wrong with a little olive oil?

Aside from it being one heck of a traffic hazard, you mean?

The article doesn't say, but it was most likely a few sprinkles of oil (like what's done at Service) and therefore not a hazard. I mean that if one doesn't believe in God and the oil isn't hazardous, than why would a person go to the lengths of washing the road? If God doesn't exist than the oil is just normal oil and as long as it's not a road hazard the atheists shouldn't feel threatened enough to wash the road.

The "anointing" happened a year ago. So this was just a symbolic gesture on the part of the atheists anyway. I'm sure that this act has as much validity for the atheists as the original anointing did for the Christians.

But it shouldn't matter if they truly believe that there is no God. I'm not Hindu, so if someone throws colored powder on me for Holi it means nothing.

Polk Under Prayer is a slap in the face to ALL non-believers, not just atheists. Christians regularly get snarky with anyone who doesn't agree with their beliefs and the whole "anointment" BS was worthy of a rebuttal by atheists. In example, when a Christian who knows good and well that you don't believe in their deity tells you that they'll pray for you. It's only done to insult your beliefs and reinforce their own. It shows a total lack of respect for other beliefs and accurately paints these particular Christians as hypocrites.

I think we can all agree that both of these lunatic organizations should be forced to sit there all day on their olive oil/unholy water-soaked highway and settle this with a game of punch buggy.

Kind of silly when you think about it. Are the Athiests worried that the ceremonial blessing might actually work? And if it did work would that mean that the Athiests were actually wrong about god?

It's not just the separation of church and state. This country is trying to REMOVE the church altogether. Well, God told us we would be persecuted in the bible. It's happening all over. You don't dare mention the word Jesus, prayer, or God anywhere anymore without somebody out there yelling "POLITICALLY INCORRECT! I'M OFFENDED! SEND THAT CHRISTIAN TO JAIL"!!!! It's getting beyond ridiculous. So much for religious freedom and freedom in general. Bit by bit we're losing ALL of those things. We're heading towards a country that wants nothing to do with God.

This country is NOT trying to remove the church at all. The church however, needs to know its place in our society and it is NOT by imposing the dogma, doctrines and beliefs upon all citizens that disagree with them.

Religious freedom is guaranteed by our Constitution as is the separation of church and state.

What we are losing is the freedom and liberty to be individuals and to be treated equally by a party that is headed towards fascism, paid for by the corporatist and radical religious policies of many of the religious hate groups in the US. The Biggest hate group of all is the Knights of Columbus (the political arm of the RCC). Over $5.9 million dollars spent by them since 1996 against same sex marriage, MARRIAGE -- a government civil contract stated by SCOTUS to be "a basic human civil right".

As for your rant about the mention of the words Jesus, Prayer or God ?? They each have a place and a time to be mentioned. When it comes to our government, a Civil government not a Theocracy, there is no place for the influence in the daily lives of ALL citizens that don't believe as you do by your trying to impose your dogma, doctrines and beliefs into our laws and constitutions.
