Atheists Attack Schools Over Prayer At Athletic Events?

~ The Rebel ~ 2012/08/22 14:31:47

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), which has gained its reputation (and a tidy living for its employees) by suing school districts and municipalities over public prayer, has chosen schools in Mississippi and Tennessee as its latest targets. According to the Mississippi Press website, the Wisconsin-based atheist group has threatened all 151 Mississippi school superintendents with lawsuits if they allow prayer over public address systems during school football games. Last September the FFRF targeted Mississippi’s Jackson County school district over its inclusion of prayer at athletic and other school events, prompting the district to redouble its efforts to protect the free-speech guarantees of its students.

The Mississippi Press reported that in its letter to the superintendents, the FFRF “cited a 2000 U.S. Supreme Court case involving Santa Fe schools in which judges ruled that a policy permitting student-led and student-initiated prayer at public high school football games and other public school-sponsored events violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment.”

There's very little difference between loudspeaker prayers of Christianity and loudspeaker call to prayers of Islam. People who are not Christian, and people who are not Muslim, should not be subjct to forced religious ceremonies.

It's only a short step from self-righteousness of majority rule loudspeaker prayers and an American Taliban. Really. I kid you not. The FFRF is protecting EVERYBODY'S rights to be free from ANY religious oppression.

Just because it's what YOU want, that doesn't make it an exception. Pray at home or at church BEFORE the game - pray with your friends AT the game, too. Get a 100 people in the stands to pray together. But DON'T have the official school announcer pray over the loudspeaker.
REALLY. You don't want to go where that leads. Trust me.

which prayer are they preaching? christian, muslim, sikh, hindu, shinto, janist, buddhist, tao, scientology, mithran, confucian, etc etc etc. i know, say all the prayers.

no, they are right in this. all religions should be treated equal because none should maintain a position of power above others. all that leads to is persecution of those religious beliefs that do not have a position of power as the predominant one. this is the main reason why the separation of church and state is necessary for a functioning society.

People are still free to pray on their own personal terms, but you have to take into account one's religion is not "all religion".
