Obama administration for Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said at a White House press briefing that he prays for rain to end the drought. Vilsack said, “I get on my knees every day. And I’m saying an extra prayer now. If I had a rain prayer or a rain dance I could do, I would do it.”

Tom Flynn, the executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, accused Vilsack of crossing the as a government official. Flynn accused Vilsack of violating the Constitution. “...praying for rain? That’s not just government entangling itself with religion, that’s government publicly practicing it, and wallowing in superstition.”

Flynn said Vilsack "sends the wrong message to distraught farmers when the Agriculture Secretary suggests that the best response is to pray. For a Cabinet official to recommend prayer as a solution or call attention to his own devotions may violate the Constitution’s prohibition against establishment of religion. Most important, though, is that prayer doesn’t work. But if you want to test the power of prayer yourself, consider this. Apparently Secretary Vilsack’s been praying for rain every day; how’s that working out?”

A prayer is not pushing religion on anyone. So you're the one that needs to get over it.

To start with to each their own and by what I read here I am not even sure which religion he would be endorsing.
I am a little surprised that some die hard christians are not complaining about the "rain prayer and rain dance" statement since these are not things of christianity but things the "savages" would do. lol

I am also tired of the hypocrisy of the christians who cut down all atheists when one does something they don't agree with but defends christians by saying they were an extremist when one does something they don't agree with.
Please stop with the hypocrisy already. Just because someone identifies with a certain religion or group does not mean they are all the same.

They wouldn't attack the Bush Administration if he did it. No matter what Obama does, there will always be someone out there who disapproves.

Atheists are the only people on this planet worse than Obama. Like when the restaurant owner was attacked for having a discount for church group coupons. What a bunch of whiny sissies. I would trade illegals for atheists, person for person, any day of the week

God (the Creator) is in the Constituition[...]. Atheists are the perfect Obama supporters though; rebellious to a fault, thoughtless, and just like every other liberal, unable to let people have their own beliefs. "you're a racist AND you believe in God! Report for re-education tomorrow at 0900. Don't bother packing"...

Yep. We've got ourselves an Obama worship per. Who needs God when you've got the Great Pretender?

I don't have the time to watch an hour press conference, It does sound like draught is a very serious problem. Considering there is not much can be done about it, I believe this is just a saying, not a call to put all resources into religion, Now is the time to start talking about climate change as these draughts are probably going to be more and more common.

It's a lack of tolerance for religious freedom on the part of the Atheists.

It is NOT government practicing religion. It is an individual citing his own personal belief. It is a part of who he is.

And he did NOT suggest this as a "solution".

Dafuq is wrong with these people! Im an atheist and I think this is ridiculous! Let the government be religious and pray, it isn't hurting anyone. As I always say, have a religion is like having a penis, it's ok to have one and be proud of it but by no means should you shove it down my throat.

Atheists need to get the hell over themselves. The world doesn't revolve around them. They're not the only ones with BELIEFS which should be respected, and a government official who prays does NOT constitute a violation of the Constitutional prohibition on the ESTABLISHMENT of religion by CONGRESS.

wouldn't it be lovely if the Christians did the same? everything you stated that the atheists are doing many Christians are doing IN SPADES.

and no - I'm not an atheist - - I'm a Christian of sorts. I just recognize intolerance when I see it.
how many Christians are dinging the atheists here but would be shrieking if a Muslim had spoken publicly about praying to Allah or a Wicca had spoken publicly about entreating the Goddess for help?

I am all for freedom of religion and if Tom Vilsack wants to pray for rain that is fine with me. Now if he insists I pray for rain with him, I will have a problem. And I hope he knows praying is not in his job description. He better have something better than that to offer the farmers.

I agree with the gist but not with the reasons given. people's faith is their own business and if Vilsack wants to pray for whatever reason - - more power to him. talking about it publicly, though, is not only sowing dissension [witness the protest from Secular Humanism] but going against the actual teaching of the Bible [Matthew 6:6].

besides, the government needs to be - you know - DOING something. asking God to mitigate what WE are willfully doing to the planet is as effective as an obese person asking God to slap that bacon-cheesburger and triple slurpee out of his/her hands.

there are certain things we have to do ourselves and its time our government led by example. bragging about praying isn't the way to do it.
