Obama administration for Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said at a White House press briefing that he prays for rain to end the drought. Vilsack said, “I get on my knees every day. And I’m saying an extra prayer now. If I had a rain prayer or a rain dance I could do, I would do it.”
Tom Flynn, the executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, accused Vilsack of crossing the as a government official. Flynn accused Vilsack of violating the Constitution. “...praying for rain? That’s not just government entangling itself with religion, that’s government publicly practicing it, and wallowing in superstition.”
Flynn said Vilsack "sends the wrong message to distraught farmers when the Agriculture Secretary suggests that the best response is to pray. For a Cabinet official to recommend prayer as a solution or call attention to his own devotions may violate the Constitution’s prohibition against establishment of religion. Most important, though, is that prayer doesn’t work. But if you want to test the power of prayer yourself, consider this. Apparently Secretary Vilsack’s been praying for rain every day; how’s that working out?”

However, if Vilsack decided that praying for rain was the ONLY solution to the problem...
I am a little surprised that some die hard christians are not complaining about the "rain prayer and rain dance" statement since these are not things of christianity but things the "savages" would do. lol
I am also tired of the hypocrisy of the christians who cut down all atheists when one does something they don't agree with but defends christians by saying they were an extremist when one does something they don't agree with.
Please stop with the hypocrisy already. Just because someone identifies with a certain religion or group does not mean they are all the same.
Yep. We've got ourselves an Obama worship per. Who needs God when you've got the Great Pretender?
there no congress can make no law of a state church.
It is NOT government practicing religion. It is an individual citing his own personal belief. It is a part of who he is.
And he did NOT suggest this as a "solution".
When I read the article I was like really fellow atheists?!? What do you care if he prays you're atheists?!?
Ohama should be doing more than praying but it doesn't hurt if he does. Sooo... Yeah.
and no - I'm not an atheist - - I'm a Christian of sorts. I just recognize intolerance when I see it.
how many Christians are dinging the atheists here but would be shrieking if a Muslim had spoken publicly about praying to Allah or a Wicca had spoken publicly about entreating the Goddess for help?
besides, the government needs to be - you know - DOING something. asking God to mitigate what WE are willfully doing to the planet is as effective as an obese person asking God to slap that bacon-cheesburger and triple slurpee out of his/her hands.
there are certain things we have to do ourselves and its time our government led by example. bragging about praying isn't the way to do it.
