Obama administration for Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said at a White House press briefing that he prays for rain to end the drought. Vilsack said, “I get on my knees every day. And I’m saying an extra prayer now. If I had a rain prayer or a rain dance I could do, I would do it.”

Tom Flynn, the executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, accused Vilsack of crossing the as a government official. Flynn accused Vilsack of violating the Constitution. “...praying for rain? That’s not just government entangling itself with religion, that’s government publicly practicing it, and wallowing in superstition.”

Flynn said Vilsack "sends the wrong message to distraught farmers when the Agriculture Secretary suggests that the best response is to pray. For a Cabinet official to recommend prayer as a solution or call attention to his own devotions may violate the Constitution’s prohibition against establishment of religion. Most important, though, is that prayer doesn’t work. But if you want to test the power of prayer yourself, consider this. Apparently Secretary Vilsack’s been praying for rain every day; how’s that working out?”

Whether working for the gov or not, a person has a right to his/her personal religious beliefs, as long as they are not making laws forcing their religion on others they can pray as much as they want and I will not complain.

For once he is right. Without rain nothing will grow. I like to eat and drink water. I think most people do too.

I personally don't care who prays for what, just as long as they don't expect me to pray along with them.

Yes, but when it finally rains, they can claim their prayers worked. And you KNOW it will rain soon enough.

I AM an Atheist, I don't agree with a lot of them. I don't agree with tearing down religious plaques or statues, I don't agree with objections to "manger" scenes, Christmas songs, etc. I DO believe they should refrain from "permanent" placement in public places, but they have a right to THEIR holidays, THEIR beliefs, just don't put them up as a permanent advertisement or try to force their belief on someone not interested. Obama is a Christian, his choice. I choose to be an American WITH choices, and I respect others choices. When we are forced to follow other peoples choices, I will cease to be an American. THAT would not be MY country.

Atheists attempt to exploit any statement or action even remotely related to Religion and Government.

Nothing really new. Just their continued destruction of American ethics and morals.

There are radicals in every group. Atheists, Christians, Mormons, whatever. We would get along FAR better if we all stopped thinking everyone in every group is like minded. The Taliban, White Supremacists, probably, but just like all Christians don't think alike, all Atheists don't think alike. I know of few Atheists that are against "American" ethics and morals, I DO know MANY Christians who think THEY dictate American ethics and morals.

I wish the FEW Atheists and the MANY Christians would ALL STFU! American ethics and morals ARE NOT CHRISTIAN, they are the ethics and morals of a free society (for the time being, anyway), a NON-single religion society, a NON single agenda society!

I am a religious man and I believe in religious liberty.

I do not like how Obama has been the most ostentatiously religious man in politics mixing his faith with his power in government.

    Doesn't matter what I think.

Almost all atheists are leftists and will prove they regularly violate their own principles.

The atheist are wrong. He has every right to pray. Just because he says he prays doesn't mean he's violating the constitution. When the media shows the president attending a church service doesn't mean he's endorsing any type of religion, but expressing his own faith. If the atheist have a problem with Vilsacks freedom of speech to express his own views, then I'd suggest they start with the federal reserve and attempt to have the words "In God We Trust" removed from all the currency. Or better yet remove themselves from the practice of spreading this type of message around by not using American currency period.

There are just as many Christian lunatics, if not more. All Atheists don't feel the way he does. Freedom of Religion is for ALL, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Atheist, etc. I have seen FAR more Christian garbage thrown at Muslims on SH, than I have seen Atheists throw at anyone, and FAR more ...er..."christian" hate thrown at Obama!

Unlike "many" Christians, he probably "respects" others.."GODS", even if he worships the Christian one. That's the American way, and he shows himself as more American than many professed "Christians"!

I'm not saying that you should respect their god. I'm saying that Obama may. As an American you SHOULD respect their RIGHT to their god, as I respect your right to your god because it's in the Constitution. Of course you can do whatever you want, and will, I'm sure.

You're saying that is what obama does. Well, thank God I am not obama. I do respect someone's right to worship the god they choose however my God is a jealous god and doesn't expect me to show obeisance to a false god.

"The Christian god is a being of terrific character,....cruel, vindictive, capricious and unjust." *Thomas Jefferson*

You are an excellent example of why he saw things that way, and further, as Thomas Paine said: " Belief in a cruel god makes a cruel man." It's "Christians" like YOU, (not the more "Jesus-like" ones), that convinced ME that I could never BE a Christian.
  • shenendoah ALofRI 2012/08/10 18:51:36

You're right. It takes Faith to be a Christian. If you've read the Bible you'll find God is totally justified in punishing His children for bad behavior. He created us so He can take us out anytime He chooses. God is not cruel, He gave us Jesus and allowed Him to be sacrificed to prove His love for us sinners.. You think the OT was bad? Read what He's got in store for us in Revelations. If you're not on the right side of the Lord your ass is His. You notice I didn't say on the 'left' side.

Flynn is a control freak. Anyone can do what they want as far as prayer. One can be praying constantly without anyone knowing about it. Because this man happened to mention he was is not a violation of the Constitution. He has freedom of speech. It is not threatening to anyone. Atheists just want to FORCE US to believe in their religion, which is "NOTHING." I find that offensive! Our Founding Fathers wanted to give us freedom to practice the religion/belief system of our choice so long as we did not hurt or force others to do so. Atheists are FORCING US to not be able to do that. They do not have to partake or do as we do, so back off and keep your belief system to yourself and stop forcing your belief of NOTHING on me!!!

I am not an Atheist, but I support your right to your ideas. Anyone should be able to express their views. I know that atheists have been persecuted, but are you now going to persecute someone for expressing his view that God can help? This was not an official government proclamation, but an individual, who worked for the Administration, expressing his faith in God. We have enough problems to work on. Let's take care of the priorities first.
