Atheists are quickly becoming the most annoying demographic on the internet

☆astac☆ 2012/09/11 03:18:17

A week ago, Salon published a story I wrote about
returning to a Creationist museum my parents took me to when I was very
young. The article was not mean-spirited or contemptuous; it was mostly
about an atheist looking back honestly and nonjudgmentally at his
religious past and religious family. I was just trying to talk about
Christianity without adopting the tone of offended arrogance that so
many non-Christians use when they’re discussing fundamentalists. To be
clear: I wasn’t defending Creationists; I just didn’t want to be a giant
dick.

Of course, plenty of other people were willing to be giant dicks. As
soon as the piece was published, the comments section erupted in
overwrought, hoity-toity, exasperating rhetoric, as people made fun of
Creationists for being ignorant and blamed the people I mentioned in the
articles for everything evil done in the name of Christianity.

Here are a few choice quotes:

“I hear Betty and Barney are especially lifelike in their display.”

“It is certainly interesting that while George Bush claimed
(incorrectly, I believe) they hate us for our freedoms, large swathes of
the US population are actually just as primitive in their thinking as
the simplest tribesmen in the mountains of Afghanistan and are held
there by a wealthy priesthood class who exploit their gullability.
[sic]

“It's a dangerous thing to show respect to beliefs and ideas that
don't deserve it. For example, Christianity. Christianity is not only
responsible for the murder of millions of people over the centuries,
it's responsible for children being killed by ‘faith-healing’ today.”
[He then linked to his website, because why not?]

Never mind that I wasn’t exposing Christianity or even endorsing it—if
you say something as mild as “Hey, here are some Christians practicing
their faith; that’s not really a bad thing” you’ll get mobbed by a group
of people who are quickly becoming the most annoying demographic on the
internet. I speak of a subtype of militant atheists who I’ll call the
“Reddit Atheists.” These are the folks who have, ironically, adopted the
attitudes of hardcore evangelicals who try to convert strangers on
subway platforms—it’s not enough for them that they don’t believe in
God, they want to make sure you don’t believe in God either. Just by
being themselves, they make the best case against humanism.

If you want to find out why I call these guys Reddit Atheists, take a brief dip into the atheism subreddit.
It is a place entirely defined by bitter, faux-enlightened young people
sharing “thought-provoking” images about the horrific evils of religion
(in practice, pretty much just Christianity) and congratulating each
other for being “enlightened.” The site was originally intended to be a
place where people talk about atheistic ideas, but as is Reddit’s
depressing trend, it soon devolved into a swampy mess of endless, banal
clichés, memes, and general anti-intellectualism. It actually rivals
Creationism in terms of having a narrow worldview. They’ve actually had a
campaign where they would write “once upon a time” on the first page of
every Bible they found in hotels, which is probably the lamest form of
vandalism ever.

Reddit Atheism isn’t about philosophy or even adult conversation; it’s
about getting riled up into a frothing-at-the-mouth ideological stupor
so you can feel guiltlessly self-righteous for the rest of the day. In
all of my trips to r/atheism, I’ve never seen anyone post anything
written in a measured tone. If you need more proof, take a look at these fine examples of even-keeled insight. I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I don’t think Ludwig Feuerbach would be proud.

But listen, I totally get it. If I were 15 when r/atheism was around,
I’d probably live in this dark corner of the internet. When you hit that
phase where you’re just starting to read grown-up stuff and you become
convinced everyone else is a moron, it’s really easy to hate organized
religion with a passion and assume that people with faith have just
failed to think things through. Then you grow up a little bit by
becoming more self-aware and maybe getting away from some of the more
odious religious people you knew as a kid—eventually, you get to a place
where you can hear someone say, “I’ll pray for you” and simply say,
“Thank you,” instead of being a total shit about it. That is, unless you
end up making a career out of “debating” religious people, a la
Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins. (By the way, what is more
arrogant than assuming someone can be reasoned into abandoning their
faith?)

Defining your life by volatile antitheism—in other words, clinging to something you don’t
believe in—isn’t just annoying, it’s actually pretty backward, and, in
some cases, culturally malignant. For a demographic that spits a lot of
game about equality and mobility, they sure love lording their
“intellect” over anyone who dares to think differently. The atheism
subreddit gets off on feeling superior to other people; it’s not about
ideas or truth, they’d rather thrive on that faux-scholar buzz. That’s
why Dawkins is their fire-and-brimstone pin-up boy. That’s why they
screencap Facebook updates from their religious “friends” so they can
laugh at all the plebeians from their pretty little perch. There’s no
respect or pragmatism, just bottomless, never-ending hate.

At a certain point you have to ask: Has hate ever led to anything
progressive? Do the Reddit Atheists actually think they’re changing the
world? Judging by their arrogance I wouldn’t doubt it. There’s an
effective way to spread knowledge, and this isn’t it. Obviously the
r/atheism brotherhood is mostly harmless, but I think I speak for
everyone else in the world when I say: Guys, shut the fuck up for a
second, please. Whatever problem you think you’re solving by your shitty
rage comics and rants, you’re not.

I agree. Most of them are a headache. What doesn't make sense to me is if they truly, sincerely don't believe in God, why would they waste so much of their time arguing against Him? It seems quite counterproductive to me.

Live and let live, live and let live? why the feck do you think we are pulling their tail and kicking their a$$?

If (Christians) had believed in live and let live we would be living and letting live right now.

When they try to pass laws restricting the freedoms of free thinkers, such as prohibiting proper sex education in schools, when they organise to proselytize, spew biblical hatred, knock on my door with a friggin message from god. Ask me at interview for a job if I am a church goer, force us to say prayers before council meetings, force us to swear by god before we are awarded our diplomas after years of study... those hypocrites, that is not live and let live.

Keep watching because we, the unbrainwashed have had enough, we are angry and organising so I suggest if you have fundamentalist pals you tell them to crawl back into their pews and leave us the hell alone!
They are creating one formidable and unstoppable force. Of course true belivevers will not be fased by this. Their leadership with an eye on the till will!
When the profit goes, the proselytization will go too.

Now the rest of the country is tired of 4 years of anti God behavior in our government, that we are not going to be silent anymore. They are afraid of being punished for being rude. What do you call it when Richard Dawkins writes a book called "THE GOD DELUSION"? What do you call it when Family Guy posts episode after episode on how stupid and dangerous religious people are? If you can't preach non-belief, how does Richard Dawkins even have a career? Atheists preach and proselytize, they do so with much more virulence and force than all but the worst fundamentalists. If you want to find one of them, you at least need to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Atheist proselytizing shows up every single time I try and discuss science on the internet.

I know people from a lot of different faiths. Of them, only atheists have tried to convert me. I know young earth creationists who know that I'm a geologist, that I make my living on the falsity of their assertions. They don't try and convert me, I don't try and convert them. The atheists do. They ignore that I'm a geologist and try and 'disprove' my beliefs, using facts they don't understand. They'll tell me that Carbon Dating places the world at 4.5 billion years old, I'll tell them "No, Carbon-14 dating is only accurate to about 20,000 years, you're probably thinking Uranium-Lead dating". Never mind who I am or what I do. "You can't be smart and a Christian" trumps any evidence I give them to the contrary.

They've created an imaginary history where The Blessed Nicolas Steno, Vicar Apostolic of the Nordic Missions and father of Geology couldn't have existed because the Catholic Church hates all science. They have declared science their new religion and quote it with all the accuracy and tenacity of the Westboro Baptist Church. They routinely declare me apostate.

They are everywhere, on my TV set, in webcomics that used to be funny, and clogging every laymen's science forum from here to kingdom come. In Russia, they declared atheism the state religion, destroyed churches, temples, and mosques, harassed and ridiculed religious people, and even executed religious leaders. Atheism can be preached, atheists are just as vicious as any other religion. This very article is on that very topic.

How do you group atheism with homosexuality? The guy who said "If God, as they say, is homophobic, I wouldn't worship that God." was Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

If you look at a map of the world, and you compare the influence of Christianity with Gay Rights, you'll notice that predominantly Christian nations have better gay rights, and allow things like gay marriage. Non-Christian nations, for the most part, are the ones who imprison or execute gays. The stronger the church's presence, the better the gay rights (though that's not a perfect correlation).

This is a segment of my states equal rights in regards to same sex matrimony:
Same sex couples have registered their wedding ceremonies with the state and received certified copies licensing that union since 2004.

A license is a permit where you must be registered with the state to have a wedding ceremony and join together in legal matrimony to get benefits.

The word “register” means an official record with the state.

Same sex couples have been able to join together in legal matrimony in Maine for 8 years with the same rights and benefits as everyone else such as inheriting their spouses property, adopt children, considered next of kin when making funeral arrangements, serve as guardian or conservator of spouses property if their spouse becomes incapacitated, visit their spouse in the hospital, purchase health insurance for their spouse if that employer provides benefits, take up to ten weeks of unpaid leave if their spouse or child is sick or dying and submit to a town clerk their spouses absentee ballot to vote.

Clearly, same sex couples already get licenses despite political rhetoric.

Clearly, same sex couples already get licenses despite political rhetoric.

Marriage is not a right. You need a license to get married. You don’t need a license for your rights.

This applies to both heterosexual and homosexual couples. So when people say it is separate but equal that is not true.

Special interest groups are not spending 5 million dollars to pass a law to get a drivers, hunting, fishing or marriage license.

All which can be revoked by the state.

This is about our rights, not special rights but taking away rights we already have such as our 1st,10th and 14th Amendment rights.

Same sex marriage is being used to attack our Constitutional rights state by state.

    Here’s how.

Same sex marriage will change the legal definition from “one man and one woman” to Person A and Person B making it meaningless.

This completes the transfer of power over this institution from the realm of ‘We the People’ and grants full control to the state which strikes at the heart of our First Amendment.

    Here’s why.

Redefining marriage will allow gay rights groups to join a class action law suit with Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Iowa against the federal government claiming discrimination.

This lawsuit bypasses Congress to go before the Supreme Court which will strike at the heart of the 10th Amendment which is states rights.

This class action lawsuit will allow non citizens to collect welfare and free healthcare which strikes at the heart of the 14th Amendment, which is what it means to be an American citizen.

This is not about love, it is about the law and the changes this law will make to our government and our rights.

Let’s look at the buzzword “equality“ they are using, it is a terrific clue as to the kind of government they are talking about.

Gay marriage is a global agenda and when they speak about “equality” they are talking about making America equal with the rest of the world, hence, the need to eliminate free speech, states rights and what it means to be an American citizen.

Eleven other countries have passed gay marriage, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Sweden.

Passing gay marriage is not the only thing they have in common, they are also ranked the most socialist countries on earth.

So what does socialism have to do with same sex marriage?

To understand that we need to know what socialism is.

Socialism is a political and economic theory that believes that government should control everything. It is a stage between overthrowing capitalism and creating a communist government.

Same sex marriage is a cover so politicians can play political football in the attempt to score votes and grow government.

What voters need to understand is in Maine everything is already fair and equal.

The last thing we want to do is use a corrupt tax code to justify passing a law that takes away our Constitutional rights for the sake of changing our government to make America “equal” with the rest of the world.

So tell me what the issue is with the gay and lesbian rights thing and why push the hell out of something that already exists ?

Your homosexual perversion is well beyond the scope of the morally minded majority in the history of human society. It is the number one sexual perversion that all other sexual perversions are derived from. True that, all other forms of sexual perversion would not exist if it wasn't for the sexual perversion of homosexuality which you promote to children within a moral society.Look back in history to see what they did to perverts, in terms of punishment, and hope that history doesn't repeat itself at least within your life time. And history does repeat itself and will repeat itself against the perversion of homosexuality and to those that have promoted it's agenda.

Tip: Stay in th closet where it's safe.

So what you are saying is that those who disagree with your point of view are simply WRONG.

Well Adolf thought that too but we are not going to allow that again. You say "This country, the world is nothing more than a cesspool" .. well buddy, so... Feel free to leave it at your earliest convenience!

Einstein is probably the best known and most highly revered scientist of the twentieth century, and is associated with major revolutions in our thinking about time, gravity, and the conversion of matter to energy (E=mc2). Although never coming to belief in a personal God, he recognized the impossibility of a non-created universe. The Encyclopedia Britannica says of him: "Firmly denying atheism, Einstein expressed a belief in "Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the harmony of what exists." This actually motivated his interest in science, as he once remarked to a young physicist: "I want to know how God created this world, I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts, the rest are details." Einstein's famous epithet on the "uncertainty principle" was "God does not play dice" - and to him this was a real statement about a God in whom he believed. A famous saying of his was "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."
