Atheist or agnostic?

Are most self-professed atheists really agnostics? (To continue a discussion from elsewhere here in the semantic debates forum.) Perhaps it depends on the definition of each of those words, but putting aside the dictionary definitions for a moment, and in your own mind, what do you think?

    My daughter used to call us Nothitarians. I've been a Catholic, agnostic, athiest, Unitarian, studied all the religions and am now a healer and earth mother who believes in a higher power that could be called "god". From what I recall athiests don't believe in a higher power and agnostics are on the fence about it. I think what is important is that a person searches their own energy source and find what works best for them. It is one of the things I liked about the Unitarians because they taught their kids about all the religions and celebrated all the holy/hollydays. That way when they were older they could make educated decisions on what made the most sense and felt right for them.

    I do not really know where I stand-close to agnostic, I guess. I was raised a Catholic and experimented with various "other" christian religions for awhile. For many years now I just do not participate.

    While I think there is some wisdom in the Bible (Proverbs), I do not think it is as sacred as many others believe. Since my knowledge of the history is not even good, let alone comprehensive, I have no real evidence to support a conclusion. I doubt the purity of the Bible through history. In many ways I think that man created god to attempt to reach conclusions that help "him" understand life and death. The not knowing is unsettling for many. I feel that if I try to live with integrity, honesty, and compassion-then I do not really have to find the final answer.

    I think that the total belief that some have is irrational.

    Well, this was actually OUR discussion, so you already know, Mr. Beale, if I may call you that.

    But for those who did not witness that discussion, I will restate my reasonings...I simply feel there is no way of proving or disproving any sort of deity that may or may not exist. It is not for me to say, with my limited perception of the world, to assess whether or not our existence has something to do with a higher power. While believing in such things may seem illogical, a question--especially one with such magnitude--is not always entitled to having a logical answer.

    There...a bit shorter than my other answer, but it gets the job done.

    Gir, yes, OUR discussion and I should have given you credit for it in the description, but could not remember our exact words and did not want to misquote you. Thanks for restating your thoughts, and my apology for not giving credit.

    What I wanted to say is that it is impossible to prove that a creator of all things type of deity does not exist. And so, as per our previous discussion, I call myself an atheist, not agnostic, even though I do admit that it could be possible that such a deity does exist. But by the same token it could be possible that the core of the sun is made of molten Kryptonite, or that 2 2=5 in some other dimension. But since those things can neither be proved nor disproved, we have only our own limited life experiences and our logic to decide whether we believe such things or not.

    Oh, and by the way, just call me Howard, I guess. It is not my real name. It was adopted from the name of a character in a movie from before you were born.

    A = not
    THEIST = believer
    so an ATHEIST is one who does not believe in any god or other deity. That's me.

    I am an agnostic atheist because I do not believe in God, based on the current lack of evidence, but I know that I could be wrong.
