CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's mayor and police superintendent publicly defended their new gang-fighting strategy Monday amid growing criticism that the changes are failing and a big reason why the city's homicide rate has soared this year.
After weeks of media reports about Chicago homicides — which so far are up nearly 38 percent from last year — Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy defiantly said during a news conference that the gang strategies in place before McCarthy arrived were the ones that failed, not the new ones.

+6But, but, but........ It's not my fault! It's someones elses fault! He learned well from Obama didn't he? Or possibly he taught Obama well. How pathetic.
Also the strict gun laws in Illinois really seem to be a deterrent to the crime rate don't they? Just more proof that resticting gun ownership in no way deters crime. I bet if they had a carry conceal law in Illinois the homicide rate would be no where as high as it is.

I am not saying that fighting gang violence is easy, but other cities have been successful using a variety of law enforcement methods. You won't find this is the news much, but Chicago of late has favored a fairly benign community outreach type of approach to dealing with their abysmal homicide rate. It would appear as though the "hug a drug dealer" (my own little phrase for the policy) has not been effective.
With a department that has the budget and the manpower they do, there is simply no excuse for having a large citizen base that is terrified to even walk out their front doors at night. Even more sad, is the only reason they are responding now is because they are getting bad national press. Situations like this make me ashamed to be a Sheriff's Deputy.
LOSER!
