Arizona: Iraqi mother arrested – beat daughter for violating Islamic religion

An Iraqi woman has been accused of beating her teenage daughter and padlocking her to a bed after she was seen speaking to a young man.

After Yusra Farhan was arrested in the Arizona hospital where her daughter was being treated for her injuries, she told police she wanted to punish the girl for violating her ‘culture’.

Culture? The daughter who got beat clarifies it was for violating her religion.

Farhan, 50, faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest. She was being held in a Maricopa County jail. Police did not identify her daughter by name.

The incident started on Tuesday, when the daughter was spotted by her father talking to a 19-year-old man at a high school parking lot in Phoenix.

Police said her father became angry and took her home, striking her several times.

The mother arrived home later and admitted to hitting her daughter with her hands and a shoe, and tying her to the bed with a rope around her waist that was secured with a padlock, court records showed.

Farhan told police she hit her daughter because she ‘was speaking to a male subject and her Iraq culture states a female is not allowed to be having contact with males because females are not allowed to have boyfriends,’ court records said.

The daughter was allowed to leave for school the next morning and was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix after telling school officials about the incident.

Police arrived at the hospital and attempted to arrest Farhan, but she and other family members struggled with officers.

She was ultimately arrested with the help of additional officers and hospital security. No other arrests were made.

‘In an attempt to diffuse the situation in the hospital, officers determined that it would be better to just remove the mother from the scene,’ a police spokesman said, adding that additional charges were expected to be filed in the case.

The arrest follows another high-profile case involving an Iraqi immigrant.

Last April, an Arizona judge sentenced Faleh Hassan Almaleki to 34 and a half years in prison for murdering his daughter in what was described as an ‘honour killing.’

Almaleki struck and killed his 20-year-old daughter Noor with his vehicle in a Phoenix valley parking lot in 2009 for becoming too Westernised and violating what he said were Iraqi and Muslim values. He also injured her boyfriend’s mother before fleeing the scene.

He didn’t strike and kill her, he targeted her and ran her over with his jeep with the intent to injure, and likely kill, her for becoming too American. Background posts here.

CBS 5 caught up with Aiya, who was with her three sisters and father after just coming home from the hospital. She denied being tied up. We asked her about the beating, and her mother’s arrest for assault.

“Here it is not allowed but for me, it’s normal,” she said, adding she is slapped just like most other teenage girls who are disobedient.

Most other teenage girls? Where? In the U.S. it is a crime to beat your child.

When we asked why her mom hit her, Aiya explained, “because I talked to boy and that’s not normal with her, and that’s not my religion. My religion says not talking to boys.“

We spoke with Dr. Souad Ali, a professor of Middle Eastern Studies at ASU. She explains in the Arab culture, hitting your children is not perceived as abuse. It’s considered discipline to protect them.

“The mother here feels probably that any encounter with a male might lead to consequences that might affect the daughter’s future,” Dr. Ali explained.

Farhan was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment, and resisting arrest.

Farhan called out to family members to help her fight off police, according to court paperwork. Those family members had to be restrained in the hospital’s emergency area, according to police.

Dr. Ali says to consider the cultural context when looking at why Farhan would resist arrest.

“If they were all male, I think she was very much resisting them because she didn’t want them to touch her,” Dr. Ali explained.

It becomes more clear with each day that Islamic sharia law is not compatible with American law and liberty in general.
