Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., explains why the Obama campaign is attacking Mitt Romney and the GOP on wanting to increase military spending. Frank tells MSNBC's Rachel Maddow that the American people have finally seen that "there is no power in the world that comes remotely close to threatening our existence."

I like Teddy Roosevelt's concept of diplomacy, "Speak softly but carry a big stick"

I think the nation should change its discourse with radical republics and speak very softly so they are intent on hearing what is said.

"We have a thing called an air/fuel bomb capable of 1 megaton of output when exploded over a city. No Radiation but a lot of damage. Fall into line and do away with all the radicalism or we will deliver one to your door step. IF after that you still don't get it. The the Nuclear Option is still there."

This message should be delivered to every single government that cannot keep its terrorists under control.

Then sit back an watch the world suddenly become a more peaceful place to live.

Yes. I think most people are sick of the wars and military spending. I was born during the Korean War, then Vietnam, then the Gulf war, Iraq, Afghanistan, not to mention the Beirut bombing of the military quarters and a couple of others that escape me now. Enough is enough. We need to put our money into this country instead of policing the world.

yes, I'm tired of the military spending, but it's not something we can just eliminate quickly. We need our Military, like it or not, that's who we are. We need to transform our militay into a smaller, more efficent machine, but just taking away the money and telling them to do just that, won't work very well. Like everything else, there needs to be a plan, and responsible people to carry it out.

The U.S. spent 7 times more than the second-biggest spender, China. Incidentally, that doesn’t make China the second-strongest military—not by a long shot. SIPRI researcher Sam Perlo-Freeman explains that’s because “a lot of other countries have been at this game for a lot longer than China.”

Put another way, the U.S. spent more on its armed forces than the next 14 countries combined. This is why I always shake my head when I here that the American citizens should take up arms against the government. Sure, we'll take our pistols and rifles and take on the largest military in history. I want no part of that action!

Shame the phony conservatives have tossed the last truly decent republican president under the bus. this president submitted a balanced federal budget to congress, something no republican president since has been able to do.

Anyway he warned against the military industrial complex and it is a shame that he was ignored.

There is no point in giving the military money to waste. The repugs and teabugers want to give the military money they don't want, and continue programs the military doesn't want just so the repugs and teabugers can benefit their district. If they are serious about cutting spending, they need to cut it where they live also. And we don't need to give the oil companies any more subsidies. They have taken enough money out of circulation already.

Yes, we spend more than other countries put together. We can blow up the whole world 10 times over. Fire power does not mean a thing. Defeating a country is different from occupying and keeping the peace after. Gradually the natives will wear you down even if it takes decades.

I would like to see more money go to space exploration and basic science research than to DARPA AND THE INDUSTRIAL-MILITARY COMPLEX. . Why do we need to spend more money on military than all the other countries in the world combined. It seems insane to do so. It may keep many people employed but there are other areas where people are better employed rather than making weapons to kill humans . The future is in space , not in killing !

    I have to say no....

But that being said, I think it is a good idea to TRIM military spending WHERE IT NEEDS TRIMMING, NO MORE. With the way the world is today, we NEED a strong military, and the military provides a lot of jobs.

Knowing that, all, what I AM tired of is all this CORPORATE WELFARE. All the "Bailouts" given to Wall Street and the mega-wealthy so they could "create jobs"... AS IF!!! All the wealthy / Wall Street crowd did with that money is STUFF IT IN THEIR OWN POCKETS!. And all "we the people", the "average American" got for it was ...

    wait for it...

    A KICK IN THE ASS.

Do the wealthy need more money?
    NO

    Does Big Oil need "subsidies"?
    NO

Does Wall Street need another "bailout"?
    NO

Should we be giving out ALL that foreign aid?
    NO.

My Uncles were all in the military in various branches of it. Please do not blame our military for our financial woes.... it's NOT their fault.

seriously, Lady - it's not about the rank-and-file troops. it's about Congress forcing the Pentagon to take on high-tech equipment it DOES NOT NEED OR EVEN WANT in order to continue subsidizing contractors in their districts/states in order to keep the campaign donations flowing.
one of the best arguments out there for campaign finance reform.

meanwhile, I must take issue with one point in your post: your statement about "All that foreign aid". that foreign aid is, far and away, the tiniest portion of our government's budget. last I heard, it was .9%. but it helps keep people from starving to death. barely. it helps keep AIDS from proliferating [which DOES affect you and me, believe me.] it helps provide safe drinking water to people and the livestock on which they depend for survival. that's 9 tenths of 1% of our budget that does that.

you ask that we not blame your relatives for our financial woes. I ask that you not blame people who, through no fault of their own, are at the very bottom of life's trash heap.

No doubt about it. When almost 50% of every dollar collected in taxes goes to support something having to do with the military, it is time to cut back. We as a country spend more than the rest of the world combined. Romney wants to cut back on just about everything EXCEPT the military. Just think how much good just a little of that military spending would do if spent on healthcare, or education, or rebuilding infrastructure. We could fix the economy almost over night.
