One in five: that’s how many women will be raped in their lifetime. One in six: that’s how many women will be victims of stalking in their lifetime. One in four women will be a victim of domestic or sexual violence at some point in their lives.
Violence in the family includes battering by intimate partners, fathers or brothers, sexual abuse of female children and young women in the household by family members, marital rape, and female genital mutilation and other traditional practices harmful to women. . Women live in fear of trafficking, forced prostitution, rape, and other abuses by armed groups.
In spite of the fact that this law has helped reduce domestic violence by more than half,
31 Republicans voted against the renewal because of the " wording". They believe only certain women should be protected. Undesirables like gays and illegals shouldn't be included. Such a sensitive, caring group.

The Violence Against Women laws provides programs and services, including:
Community violence prevention programs
Protections for victims who are evicted from their homes because of events related to domestic violence or stalking
Funding for victim assistance services, like rape crisis centers and hotlines
Programs and services for victims with disabilities
Legal aid for survivors of violence
What most people tend to forget is how little time has actually passed since women have had ANY rights. Remember it has been less than 100 years since women have been able to vote! It wasn't until the 1970's that it became more mainstream for women to even aspire to have careers!

"Violence Against Women Act of 1994
Violence Against Women Act of 1994
Summary of Criminal Provisions of the Violence Against Women Act
The 1994 Crime Act was landmark legislation for all victims of crime and demonstrates the commitment of President Clinton and the Congress to make real progress in the areas of law enforcement, victim assistance, prosecutions and crime prevention. The Violence Against Women Act, enacted as part of that law, makes it a crime to cross state lines to continue to abuse a spouse or partner, creates tough new penalties for sex offenders, and prohibits anyone facing a restraining order for domestic abuse from possession of a firearm."
