First, minimum wage jobs are not career jobs. They are not supposed to provide a living wage. To make a living wage find a career. You have no right to expect to make a living wage at McDonald's or Burger King.

Second, when minimum wage goes up, several inflationary forces come into effect. Small employers often can't afford to retain the employee and let them go, which also devalues the wage other higher paid employees get because they then have to work harder with no compensation. Prices increase to offset the cost of the higher minimum wage to the employers, which devalues the buying power of the increase, as well as inflating prices for all consumers. It also causes employers to hire MORE employees but reduce the hours of current employees because the laws and company policies are different between "full time" and "part time " employees. Instead of getting 32 hours at minimum wage they get 28 at the new rate.

Minimum wage jobs are not suppose to be career jobs. If all you can find is a minimum wage job then you have truly screwed up in life.

However when people use "minimum wage " statistics they are speaking of those making $7.25 an hour only but there is lots of folks betwee that and the $13.36 an hour that is a living wage. In fact did you know of the 20 million people wrking in the restraunt industry only 14% make a living wage and 60% are bellow poverty
and given the job market, where there are more unemployed people than tha jobs right now particularly for those without a degree but since so many of us are using this time to get our degree I'm sure it will end up with PHDs flipping burgers menwile they tell us we need to compete with sweat shops

Fastfood places pay minimum wages. Food workers also include wait staff which is paid less because they get tips which fast food workers do not.

Tips are the purist form of exploitation by the employer (10 years experience) It allows them to pay 3 people less than minimum wage for 1 So then they make them do "side work" reduce the hourly employees and cut into the earning potential of the floor staff since they get less tips

She's just a troll. Probably one of those heavier types that sit at their computer and wait for the DNC talking points. I bet she gets some sort of government paycheck. I wonder if she's ever really done an honest day's work or know what it consists of.

Yeah, everyone should just stop working those jobs... absolutely everyone, there should be not one person willing to clean up after you, or serve you food, because that would just make them a screw-up.

Rubbish. Minimum wage jobs are not supposed to provide a "living wage." They are intended for entry level positions.

If that's all you're worth, that's all I would be willing to pay you.

If $10 is good, wouldn't $50 be better? What do you think would happen to the economy if we raised the minimum wage to $50 and hour?

Where? Let's see some proof, although there is none. Unions base their pay scales on multiples of government set Minimum Wage. Raise the MW, all union pay is raised, prices have to be raised to pay wages, workers have to demand higher wages to pay for more expensive products.

It is called an inflationary spiral due to government interference.

What world do you live in? Every time minimum wage goes up prices go up. It's simple economics. The business is going to pass along that cost to the consumer.

It's not bull. I managed a restaurant and saw the minimum wage go up twice. Both times prices went up. Businesses are in business not to provide jobs but to make money. When you start taking money from their bottom line they will do something to retrieve it. It's economics 101.

Raising the minimum wage hurts the economy. It causes prices to go up on items, cc and devalues the dollar.

Raising it causes unemployment to rise. It's been proven time and time again. It closes off access to the job market to many of the very people that the "raise the minimum wage" crowd claims to care about.

The vast majority of minimum-wage earners are not the main breadwinners in their family. Mostly they are part-time working students, working in jobs that are supposed to be temporary -- not careers.

Minimum wage is an entry level wage. It is for completely untrained workers and is not now nor ever was meant as what is called "a living wage." Those who are trying to put this through have totally ignored what the prior wage hike did to part time jobs. When you raise the base pay for the lowest wage earners, it is necessary to raise all hourly wages. That in turn means more taxes paid to the government by the employee and by the employer in terms of employment taxes. This cost adds to the cost of goods and services.which adds to the cost of doing business. This either makes it to the point that a business cannot make a profit and closes its doors or where it becomes so costly that they cannot expand. This will further depress job growth. Part time jobs will be consolidated or eliminated altogether. Small businesses (labeled "the rich" by Obama) will be further decimated by this action. But just you watch as the Left markets this to the people who largely do not pay taxes as some sort of boon. Obama and his party will not be happy until there is class warfare in the streets.
