What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label, "Liberal"? If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But, if by a "Liberal," they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people - their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties - someone who believes that we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say that I'm a "Liberal."

I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, and the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas. It is, I believe, this faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith, for liberalism is not so much a party creed or a set of fixed platform promises as it is...

I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, and the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas. It is, I believe, this faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith, for liberalism is not so much a party creed or a set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of Justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves.

I believe also in the United States of America, in the promise that it contains and has contained throughout our history of producing a society so abundant and creative and so free and responsible that it cannot only fulfill the aspirations of its citizens, but serve equally well as a beacon for all mankind. I do not believe in a super state. I see no magic to tax dollars which are sent to Washington and then returned. I abhor the waste and incompetence of large-scale Federal bureaucracies in this administration, as well as in others. I do not favor state compulsion when voluntary individual effort can do the job and do it well. But I believe in a government which acts, which exercises its full powers and its full responsibilities. Government is an art and a precious obligation; and when it has a job to do, I believe it should do it. And this requires not only great ends but that we propose concrete means of achieving them.

Our responsibility is not discharged by an announcement of virtuous ends. Our responsibility is to achieve these objectives with social invention, with political skill, and executive vigor. I believe for these reasons, that liberalism is our best and our only hope in the world today. For the liberal society is a free society, and it is at the same time and for that reason a strong society. Its strength is drawn from the will of free people committed to great ends and peacefully striving to meet them. Only liberalism, in short, can repair our national power, restore our national purpose, and liberate our national energies.

I am proudly Independent of party, though ideologically I frequently find myself on the liberal side of arguments. Of course, this also depends on my geographic location. For where I live I'm as liberal as it gets. For the east coast I'd be more moderate.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but I've never expected a hand out. I've worked since the age of 15. I paid my entire way through college and graduated not having to pay a dime. I worked through college and my grades were outstanding. If I want something I work for it. Some people call me a Democrat with Republican work ethics! However I have a heart. I'd give my hard-earned money to those who are under-insured or not insured because the insurance companies have dumped them for pre-existing conditions.

I don't get free health care. I lost my health insurance after I lost EVERYTHING to Hurrican Katrina. I'm uninsurable because of a pre-existing condition. I do have an insurance policty with a $5,000.00 decuctible. I go to places that allow me to pay on a sliding scale basis according to my income - becaue I demand that I do pay. I don't go to the E.R. because that would be irresponsible of me.

I sell things online to make extra money for the things I need. Because I have a heart and believe in health care for all, you think I'm a mooch??? How dare you. Typical Republican.............. You assume before you think. You assume before you ask.

OK--You are uninformed and do not understand politics, which is probably why you are "a liberal, a democrat."
We DO NOT have gov't health care. That was the House's version of the Bill that has been passed.
Senate needs to vote on their version of the gov't health care Bill.
Then the two need to merge into one Bill.
That final Bill will be voted on to see if it will pass.
Better stop watching C-Span, as it is not teaching you anything.

Duh, yes, I know that. But it's the first step. That first step was the first step in decades. We WILL have a health care bill passed or we won't have health care at all in 10 years - even you must be able to wrap your brain around that.

As long as I've lived (republican dad and democrat mom), I know politics.

I am a FISCAL CONSERVATIVE. I am more socially liberal when it comes to NATIONAL LEVEL POLITICS. Most SOCIAL matters are an issue of STATE GOVERNMENT not federal government, i.e. abortion, gay marriage, etc.

Locally am an all around conservative. I am a registered republican FOR ONE REASON ONLY............................ Primaries. In the state of Florida for me to have a chance to affect change within a 'historically' conservative party I must be a registered member of that party. If it were not for this rule in the state of Florida.............. I would have left the Republican party YEARS AGO.

Well you think you have a brain anyway. And if you think Obama isn't for sale ask yourself how did he spend 1 Billion dollars getting himself elected? And the overwhelming majority of Americans don't support the Pelosi Government take over of health care. This is not opinion it is fact. This is also why the Dems got there butt's handed to them in last tuesday's election because they have lost touch with the majority of Americans. I do deal with facts not emotions when making my poilitical deccesions. This is the diference between us. 23% of Americans are Strongely in favor of the Pelosi Bill, 44% are strongely Opposed. It may not cater to your emotions but it's the facts. Enjoy you holidays it will be short liverd in 2010.

Oh, cut your whining. Obama spent his election money that we all sent in $5.00, $10.00 and $20.00 at a time! I sent in what I could when I could and so did all his other supporters.

There is not Government takeover - that statement is so overused. Please come up with something REAL and believable. Actually, the elections weren't that bad. It won't hurt us. The Hispanics didn't vote, the African Americans didn't vote and the young Americans didn't vote. So, who voted? The republicans and seniors. Everyone is worried and scared. The number of people who voted were not the numbers that were expected.

2010 will be a great year. The ecomony is just starting to turning around and in any recession, jobs come LAST. Get that through your thick head. When the banks start lending, people can start new businesses and then hire people for the jobs that are sorely needed.

You republicans think with a depressive attitude. We democrats belive in positive thinking. My positive thinking gets me thourh hurricanes, the Bush years, people living beyond their means and complaining about it.

I can't wait till the insurance companies MUST insure people with pre-existing conditions. I want those rich suckers to squirm...........

My holidays started last night at 11:15 p.m. when health care reform passed and will continue as it starts to kick in and work.

I can't wait till you eat your words.........................
