According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a recent E. Coli outbreak has sickened at least 14 people in six different states. It has also taken the life of a 21-month-old baby in New Orleans. Are you worried about the infection spreading?

Since your intestines are filled with e. coli, everyone is carrying around the possible source of food poisoning. Wash your hands, wash your vegetables, and cook your meat. Duh!

there are different strands of of e. coli, genius. Escherichia coli maybe found in your lower intestines as gut flora, but other variations like Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Escherichia coli O104:H4, can cause serious food poisoning in humans, hemorrhagic diarrhea, kidney failure, disease, etc. and should NOT be found anywhere in your body.

Well "genius," I would read a little more next time before making insults.

There are over 700 antigenic types (serotypes, not "strands") of E. coli recognized based on O, H, and K antigens. At one time serotyping was important in distinguishing the small number of strains that actually cause disease. Thus, the serotype O157:H7 (O refers to somatic antigen; H refers to flagellar antigen) is uniquely responsible for causing HUS (hemolytic uremic syndrome). Nowadays, particularly for diarrheagenic strains (those that cause diarrhea) pathogenic E. coli are classified based on their unique virulence factors and can only be identified by these traits.

Transmission of most diarrheagenic E coli strains occurs from consumption of food or water contaminated with human or animal feces (see References: CDC 2005: Preliminary FoodNet data, 2004, Kaper 2004, Kassenborg 2004). For some pathotypes, fewer than 1,000 colony-forming units can cause disease; therefore, person-to-person transmission from infected symptomatic people or ASYMPTOMATIC carriers can be an important mechanism for secondary spread.

What is non-pathogenic for one person may cause disease in another due to variations in immune system and bacterial load exposure. This is why "traveler's diarrhea" exists.

A serotype is liker a "strain",, genius. Serovar [serotype]. A serovar is a strain differentiated by serological means. http://www.mansfield.ohio-sta...

and thanks for all irrelevant information there. but what's your point, simpleton? The point is Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Escherichia coli O104:H4 cause harm to the human health and sensible people should be concerned.
  • YouSirName chgo 2012/06/17 19:47:48
    YouSirName
My point, since you seem unable to handle too much information, is that it isn't just the two serotypes you mention that cause disease. People are potentially exposed to pathogenic bacteria all the time. So take common precautions - wash your hands, etc., as I said.
  • chgo YouSirName 2012/06/17 20:56:34
    chgo
    you sound dumb.

Most people infected with Escherichia coli O145 or Escherichia coli O26 STEC O26 develop diarrhea (usually watery but sometimes bloody) and abdominal cramps. Some illnesses last longer and can be more severe. I Many clinical lab
some develop a more severe infection. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, can begin as the diarrhea is improving. HUS can occur in people of any age but is most common in children under 5 years old and the elderly.
    www.cdc.gov/ecoli/outbreaks.h...

so only washing your hands does not block infections from any serotype of e. coli. rinsing the meat out, sanitizing cookware and countertops, cooking the meat and other foods like green leafy greens until it is WELL DOWN, etc. greatly prevents infection.

There are 6 million ways to die, no point in worrying about something that is inevitable.

    Enjoy life while you can.

Besides, you have about as much chance of winning the lottery as you do dying from E. Coli.

At least not beyond taking the standard precautions. Most outbreaks are due to improper handling and most e. coli is killed if the food is cooked properly. Yes, foreign e. coli can kill you, but it is pretty rare. Also, a lot of people don't realize that everyone already has e. coli in their digestive tract. It's been there for years and is in fact beneficial. The problem is when a foreign strain comes along. Wash your hands and wash and cook your food and the likelihood of being infected is reduced to an acceptable level. Buying local from a small farm is a good idea, also.

We are seeing increases in E. Coli and many other types of bacteria outbreaks. Why do we see increases, well it may be do to so many 3rd world immigrants who have poor sanitary habits. I thinks also kids today, a high percentage don't wash there hands after using the bath room or handling other foods and transfer bacteria to the food. I don't eat out at to many fast food places anymore, I've seen to many dirty people bad habits, oh my god I remember one in particular.

Not really. E coli is used all the time to produce the required proteins/enzymes because of it's "shelf life." Whether this was an accidental spread by improper technique or a new strand adapting to it's environment is still trying to be discerned.

I wash and/or cook my vegetables, I make sure my meat is well cooked, and I don't cut things with a knife I used to cut raw meat. Simple ways to keep yourself from getting sick. It's not COMPLETELY fool-proof, sure, but it's a great start.
