Are U.S. Gun Laws to Blame for Violence in Mexico?

jt November 03, 2009 19:16:21

http://www.opposingviews.com/questions/are-us-gun-laws-to-bla...

A recent explosion of drug-related violence in Mexico killed thousands of people last year, dangerously destabilizing America's southern border. Some people, including many in Congress, believe the violence is being fueled in part by weak U.S. gun laws that allow powerful firearms to reach Mexico. But gun rights advocates see this connection as tenuous at best, and believe the violence in Mexico is being used to scare the public into supporting unnecessary domestic gun control laws. Would stronger gun laws in the U.S. stem the violence in Mexico?

    Yea; if you take all American's guns away, then you will have a government that can do any thing to its citizens. As one recent SH said, Canada does not have a problem with U.S. guns. If anything, we need them more so these days, using Mexico as an example. An unarmed citizen is prey to the predators, who seems to get guns no matter what.

    Absolutely! Studies have proved that people with no prior criminal history will, when exposed to guns, Immediately start organizing drug cartels, gangs, prostitution and slavery rings, etc. If we would only be intelligent and take guns away from all Americans, the Mexican cartels would stop their criminal operations and start having bake sales and selling organically grown fruit and vegetables to raise money instead. If the gun lovers (who are all filled with hate) would just face the truth, it's obvious that before Americans invented gunpowder* there was no crime or violence and more tolerance.

    *I know some RWNJ's will try to argue that the Chinese invented gunpowder, but educated people know that it was the Bush family. They only blamed the Chinese because they're fascists. Get with the program.

    No, I read in a recent report from the FBI that of all the guns confiscated on raids, only a very small percentage came from the United States. This of course will be used to it's fullest by the anti-gun crowd to propose even more restrictive gun regulation.

    Absolutely not especially when many of the American guns found were taken from the Mexican Military Stash the Americans has sold them years ago and military personal were selling the weapons to gangs.

    No, do you really think they are buying all those guns legally and then shipping them across the border. What could be to blame is the very porous border that we have between the two countries. The Mexicans won't patrol it because they want all of their poor to flood to the US and the US won't patrol it because the politicians are too afraid that it will offend a large voting block. Patrol the border and stop the guns from going over to Mexico and the drugs from coming here. I don't understand how this is so complicated for those in DC.

    No it's just a bs ploy by the anti-gun whimps to get naive Americans to buy into that crap. How bout ya legalize marijuana and shut down the f'n Mexico/US border. Don't let them in here and send the ones here back over there...EVER THOUGHT OF THAT?

    There have been stupid comparisons made before but this one is by far the stupidest so far. Anti gun nuts will stop at nothing to distort facts to try to get thier message across. Try telling the truth, in states with easy to obtain concealed carry permits the crime rate goes down. In Austrailia where they took away peoples guns the crime rate went way up. These are the kind of things you will never hear from anti gun groups because it doesn't fit their agenda. Never let facts get in the way of your opinion.

    Nope.
    Mexico's gun laws and its corrupt government are to blame for all the violence.

    Good example;
    El paso=pretty darn safe
    Juarez=killing field

    As soon as you cross that boarder, everything goes to hell.

    Sorry most of those powerfull firearms that reach Mexico were sold to them buy the US goverment to the Mexican Goverment. It is the waek Mexican control over their people is how they get sold to the drug cartels. Hell most in the cartels are ex soldiers that are enticed by the very large pay increase. people sold drug cartels cartels soldiers enticed large pay increase

    I call bullshit on this one. Violent Mexicans are to blame for Violence in Mexico - oh, and all you casual drug users. Your money is going to behead Mexican police and murder countless Mexicans. Your money is what puts 10 year old kids on the street corners peddling drugs. Your money is blood money.

    Would stronger gun laws in the U.S. stem the violence in Mexico? I do not believe that it would. I think it would just make it harder for honest people to buy guns. If people with bad intentions want to hurt someone, they are going to do it, they do not care about laws.

    No, we are a seperate government and can only control within our border. This sounds like a UN job. As far as violence on the southern American border, allowing more weapons would make it worse because more people may shoot people for God knows what reason. I think putting National Guard on the borders from those permanently, of course rotating their tours for about a year at a time. That's what are military is for, protecting us, oh but wait,most are overseas.

    Folks, only 18% of the guns are traceable to the US. The rest are bought from other foreign sources. Media won't tell you that. The ones of the US are all illegal and most are stolen, but still have serial numbers.
