Are U.S. Cigarettes Deadlier Than Others?

SodaHead Living 2010/06/04 14:00:00
Smoking is a bad habit wherever you are, but it might be even more dangerous in the U.S.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study finds that those puffing on American-made products may receive up to three times the level of carcinogenic nitrosamines as those smoking foreign brands, ABC News reported.

Levels of nitrosamines, a major cancer-causing agent in cigarettes, absorbed by daily smokers in a 24-hour period were compared for 126 smokers in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia.

"People smoking the U.S. brand cigarettes [we tested] received a level of this carcinogen in their mouth and lungs that was three times higher compared to smokers in Canada and Australia," says Dr. James Pirkle, deputy director for science at the CDC's National Center for Environmental Health.

But don’t run out and buy foreign brands. Smoking cigarettes greatly increases the risk of cancer no matter where your smokes come from.

There are a lot of things that cause cancer and people can get cancer's and lung cancer even though they have never used tobacco. This is like saying because you bought one gallon of gas at a gas station you alone caused the oil spill in the Gulf when you only bought one gallon of gas and millions of gallons of oil have spilled into the Gulf.

That's strange, i thought that the prohibition laws regarding the nicotine levels were standardised internationally...i wonder how it is that they get away with selling more toxic smokes in the United States? That can't be legal?

well i recently turn 18 and i bought my first pack to try it out and i have to say that i understand at first your body rejects it completely fighting the smoke but after a couple puffs you feel a lot better yes of course you finish that cigarette and your already lighting the next it's terrible cause you say to yourself well so and so smokes and they aren't dead. even though a i saw my aunt die of lung cancer in front of me the media and peer pressure really kicks in and it's not like i want to smoke it's more of a never say never

possibly, but if people don't want to die early then they just shouldn't smoke. I think they bring it upon themselves.

I don't care about what cigarette is dangerous or not. It gives you lung cancer and affects your body horribly. I'll never smoke.

wow I smoke. BUT I do it where there is no one around, and outside at my own home. I live where the air is very open. I don't smoke alot, but I don't subject anyone to it either.
I say GOOD to those who DON'T smoke!!! and leave me to my habits.(yes I am aware of the consequenses) Whether in the USA or anywhere else it's bad. there's really no place where it is healthy or good. Thanks for all the warning anyway.

I smoked for 50yr's Now I trying hard to stop. Our brain isn't dead but we did make a very bad chose to smoke. Once you start it is hard to stop . I had no problem stopping drinking . But Cig.s are addicting & it's hard to get over them. My lungs are shot & I can't work any more at all or play . All on account of I smoked. My life is over because of them . If you don't smoke then don't start .If you do then STOP NOW ,While you still have your health & so you can keep it.

I smoked for 20 years (19 to 40) about 3 to four packs a day. And I stopped 16 years ago ( 40 to 56) and have great lungs now.

That's good! Maybe that'll get rid of the smokers. Smoking is dumb. It's a death wish for people who started smoking in the first place.

Electronic cigarettes produce no smoke - only a water-based vapor that does not leave a smell in clothes or hair. They cannot cause a fire when one falls asleep using them as nothing burns. They leave no tar in the lungs. My mother has not touched a regular cigarette since trying hers. You can see one being used at http://www.CleanGreenNicotine...

When I quit I made list of 300 important reasons, I should not smoke (so as to arbitrarily think about #289, or #322, or #087, when I might start feeling like starting again) and this helped a lot to make me quit. This U.S.deadliest cigarette factor would have been on my list if I had known about it.

I'm a former 3 pack a day smoker and I was also a menthol smoker on top of that, Menthol is very addictive and it makes quitting smoking that much harder to do, I wished I never took up the habit to begin with!

Which isn't included in Native American brands or cigars! Funny how some who smoke dies of cancer and others can live till they are eighty or ninety and smoke the majority of their lives...go figure! I wonder what explanation the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can give for that! There are so many things out there that are man made products that also causes cancer so I wonder how they separate everything to get the actual cause!

They can't always get at the actual cause. I think that if a smoker gets lung cancer, they assume it is from smoking. But so many factors play into who gets it and who doesn't: genetics, overall state of health and the immune system, diet, lifestyle, too much partying, too little sleep, constant worry, depression, fear, exposure to pesticides in the air and/or our food, exposure to other toxic chemicals, living on a street with a lot of traffic, there are so many reasons why.

I think it's the chemicals that do it. Native American and tribal tobacco is just that: tobacco and wood pipe. There's no filter or tasty additives. Don't cigarette companies add something else that makes it addictive? Or was that just anti-smoking propaganda? :-/

I think so too and those chemicals are developed and produced from humans!

Your right, everyone reacts differently...my father is also allergic! I did smoke cigarettes for almost 40 years and I switched over to Wise Guys Honey Berry Cigars. I have notice a big difference between the two, how I feel physically, how I breath, and how much more energy I have now and now cigs smells like burnt wood to me. And that second hand smoke causing cancer crap is just that...a load of CRAP! With all the members of my family who have smoked, even with and around children and others, funny how no one got cancer from all the second hand smoke...and I have a VERY large family!
