Are the middle aged discriminated against in the job market?

Christian 2012/09/14 22:57:29
Older workers too young for retirement but struggling for months if not years to
find jobs have policy experts concerned as the recession drags on and
long-term unemployment continues to rise. Experts say that age
discrimination is severely compounding the jobs crisis for older
workers, although the phenomenon is difficult to quantify or to prove,
and remains under-examined by the government. This time, it is not just
making it more likely that these workers will be laid off. It is also
making it much harder for them to gain new positions.

Yes,in most places. But,I would rather hire an older experienced person than a younger, lazier and inexperienced one.

YES!!! I was and still will not be hired by anyone in my field since I know more than most of the people interviewing and it makes them uncomfortable.

40 years in my industry and you learn a little bit about it. When you have someone half your age looking at you to hire, all they see is a competitor NOT a team mate.

How severe is your child's autism? I have that worry with my grandson. Hugs! My children have kept me young, although I'll never admit that to them. ;)

That right. I'm running a 1200 acre farm/ranch right now rather than stay in my previous industry. A WHOLE NEW field of endeavor but I am enjoying it and am out of the rat race of the city and politics of a corporate/governmental environment.

    My gain is their loss!

Corn, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, carrots, you just about name it I farm it. Plus we have chickens, turkeys, pigs, goats, a couple of sheep, a couple of alpaca's, plus about 90 cows -- we chose medium miniature Jersey's for milk and miniature Dexter's for meat. They are easier to handle and don't do as much damage to the environment. I plan to more than double the number of Dexter's to about 250 as I build the totally natural free range feeding of the cattle.

Oh wow! All that for commercial? We had the garden, chickens, etc..the cattle was only commercial, for the meat. No dairy. Quite an endeavor!

Oh no! I started with a 12 acre plot some 35 years ago. I retired from my regular career in 2005 after 40 years with the company, and took up the new career. By that time the 12 acres had grown to over 400 with purchases of neighboring pieces in preparation of my retirement. I build barns and a low pressure hydro electric generation plant, plus solar and wind for more power when hydro is low. The Solar by itself will power the entire farm/ranch requirements along with the 200 battery storage bank. I sell power to the power company every month.

I am thoroughly impressed! Envious and nostalgic as well, self reliance is a waning lifestyle. Frankly, it's under attack, but that's another subject. Thank you for sharing your great accomplishment with me! :)

You're very welcome. Yes self reliance is a waning lifestyle, however, in some people it is coming back greatly when confronted with what they've been through and what we see ahead. I saw what is happening now more than 40 years ago, and made it my goal to be totally independent of everything supplied by an outside infrastructure of our nation. This is what reminded me of it at that time.

    Then again in 1977

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

At that time I said NOT ME!!

So I looked around and found a place to build from scratch.

It is a 35 year endeavor but that's ok. My very first power on the farm was an old fashioned wind mill. There is nearly constant wind here which made wind a natural source of energy.

I remember the 1977 N.Y. blackouts. What was your career, before the farm? Do you give tours or teach others about self reliance? Feel free to private message me.

No I was in the public transportation industry.

I became aware of self reliance when I picked up a copy of Mother Earth News one day and read it cover to cover. Looking back it seems such a short time ago. But I also got interested in geodesic domes and sustainable societies at the same time. Strange how our lives suddenly are changed in course.

Indeed it is. Thank you, again, for sharing yours with me. It brings back memories of my grandfather and later my uncle, proudly touring me through their farms, and of course the work, the quality of the food. Sigh...
    Much Regard, J.A.G.
