Steep Cuts To Special Education, Disability Programs Loom

The White House is warning that special education will face more than $1 billion in cuts and millions more will be trimmed from other federal programs for people with disabilities next year unless lawmakers act.

In a report sent to Congress Friday, the Obama administration painted a stark picture of what’s to come, detailing the impact of more than $100 billion in automatic spending cuts that are scheduled to take effect Jan. 2.

The funding reductions were triggered after lawmakers failed to reach a budget deal last year. As a result, most federal programs will be slashed by at least 8.2 percent.

That means that more than $1 billion will be chopped from special education, the White House said. Meanwhile, housing for people with disabilities will be reduced by $14 million and the U.S. Department of Labor’s office focusing on disability employment will be cut by $3 million.

Research into developmental disabilities could also be impacted with the National Institutes of Health facing a $2.5 billion loss.

Social Security and Medicaid, however, are expected to remain largely unaffected.

The 394-page White House report said the cuts would be “deeply destructive” and indicated that the reductions to education spending would mean that “children with disabilities would suffer.”

While concern about the scheduled spending reductions is widespread, it’s not likely that Congress will take any action until after the November election.

Congress won't act until after elections and their replacements would have to act in emergency sessions to pass anything in time.

Yes, if Romney and Ryan win they will have to cut those kinds of programs in order to give the 1% a tax cut. Otherwise they will just add to the Deficit, Thats why they won't give specifics about what they will cut. They will also take away the tax deduction most homeowners get off their mtg. and Republican George Will also said he is going to get rid of tax deductions for charities. So yes what ever middle and low income families need, then it will be cut.

Not when President Obama is reelected. Education is our key to a bright and successful
future as a country while Disability Programs are our key to helping humanity overcome
the trials and travails most of us have been fortunate to avoid.

Not unless you count no increase as a cut.

It depends on who gets elected. Disability acts have created new bureaucracies that drain funds .that could be used to more effectively serve the disabled

Of course it is going to get cut. We don't have the courage to cut down on the size of our bloated, over-extended and pointless military.

If the government goes off the cliff, then republicans will have to agree to the proposal the democrats will put forward of renewing the tax cuts for everyone who makes less than 250,000 and allowing the rates to increase on those making more than 250,000. Increasing taxes on the rich will go a long way to solving our financial problems. Republicans will then not violate their pinko commie pledge that they took.

The winner of the election will be staring in the face of a 16 trillion plus deficit. It will have to be delt with, somehow. Surgical steel ain't gonna cut it.. An axe might not suffice, either.

There's going to be un-lubricated pain. The question for voter's is: Who do you want to sock it to you? Limp wrist Barack or slam bam Mitt?

The feds mandated special ed through public law 94-142, but they have never supported it financially. At best, they may pay 10 to 15% of the actual costs of special education programs mandated by federal law. Cutting what they don't pay for anyway is not a surprise.
