Are 'Legal Drugs' as Dangerous as Illegal?

Just because a substance is legal, that doesn't mean it's safe. With new substances hitting the market on a regular basis, it's impossible for authorities and experts to keep track of them, meaning there's very little reliable information available. A while back, a handful of teens were hospitalized after taking synthetic marijuana -- cause enough for concern. But this weekend a 20-year-old man died after taking a substance called Benzo Fury at a Scotland music festival.

David Liddell, director of Scottish Drugs Forum, said in a statement, "Benzo Fury is a so-called legal high -- or New Psychoactive Drug -- which appears to have a similar effect to Ecstasy. It's one of the new legal highs developed to get around the banning of similar compounds ... As it's not been around for long there is little information on long-term effects and as with all these drugs, there's no knowing what's actually in them. The names are just to market them and may bear no relation to what's in them." Do you think these "legal drugs" are just as dangerous as the illegal ones?

No... 100 people is "many", but it's not "most" of, say, 1000... and I highly doubt 1 in 10 drinkers becomes an alcoholic. About 5% of drinkers become alcoholics... that's not "most".

Pfft, I'll take my weed pure, thank you. ;-)
The only thing I really regret doing is smoking cigarettes... I am terribly addicted. I don't drink, but I do smoke marijuana and I find it adds to my life, rather than takes from it (then again, I don't smoke my brains out and get burnt out).

Let's say first that I smoke, drink and I'm an ocasional recreational drugs user...
Now, how many people I know passed away because of an overdose? 1
How many for a car accident 'cause of alcohol abuse? Many
How many 'cause of cancer after many years smoking? Many
How many...? I could go and go, but I think my meaning is clear

OBAMA IS MORE DANGEROUS BECAUSE HE IS USING THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION TO CREATE SHORTAGES OF CANCER DRUGS TO KILL AMERICANS

    HEALTHCARE

Hitler Murdered Millions of Jews and Obama plans on Killing thousands if not Millions of Seniors by not providing them the needed Medication. If you do not believe that talk to those who are going without now.

IT IS WHAT WILL BE COMMON IF OBAMA CARE IS APPROVED BY THE SUPREME COURT.

AND I CAN TELL YOU THIS MY WIFE NEEDS SPECIAL MEDICATION AND IF THEY EVEN TRY TO LIMIT HER MEDICATION I AM GOING TO WASHINGTON

What regulations directly crippled the drug companies? I see people make these really major claims, but I never see it backed up.

Drugs are drugs are drugs. Just don't do 'em, kiddies. Especially all of this crazy new stuff they keep coming out with. Syn (synthetic marijuana) is just not good. You have no idea what you're getting into...

I used to use it all the time. But I'm very fearful I might have caused myself permanent damage, to both mind and body. I can tell you right now, I am NOT the same person as I was before I used it (something that has never happened to me with any other drug I've ever taken). I've changed. And sometimes I get flashback highs. Sometimes I get panic and anxiety attacks. I go through random bouts of depression. So I will say it again: stay away from "legal high" drugs.

Drugs might make you feel good in the short term, but I find that I'm SO much happier and enjoy my life almost 100 times more when I've been off drugs and sober for a long period of time. Even "safe" drugs (shrooms, marijuana, caffeine) have their downsides. When I'm clean, my thoughts are sharper, I'm more creative, I have better social skills, my reflexes are improved, and all in all I just feel, for lack of a better word, well, better. It's no easy road to bring yourself around, and it's certainly not going to happen unless you want it to. But, if it means anything, I recommend it to you personally. You will not regret it. Trust me.

    Cheers,

    Former Addict

Actually more dangerous. They are formulated to have a specific effect on the body. This effect is not always obvious, and may not be the effect that abusers are hoping for. In addition, since these drugs are "legal", their proliferation continues without check. In opposition, illegal chemical drugs often lose potentcy over time.

Not really. If anything looking at statistics alcohol and cigarettes kill more than all illegal drugs combined. Given that they are not as dangerous, they are even more so. The only thing safer is safety from the law. Weed never killed anybody yet its so illegal.

Only because of the drug addicts out there that abuse them. those people have made it so if you go to the drug store with a script, lets say, with oxycontin, they look at you like your the drug addict & treat you kinda weird. And the thing is there are people out there who are in constant Pain and really need these drugs.

"Legal" drugs are responsible for more overdoses, and deaths, than illegal. Prescription drugs, completely legal, have been responsible for the deaths of countless people of all ages and social standings, including Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Substances such as Spice and Benzo Fury are even worse, because the dangers of using them are little known to even the "experts." Just remember, cocaine used to be an ingredient in Coca-Cola, heroin was lauded as a wonder drug given to infants in cough syrup, and alcohol and tobacco kill more people every year than every illegal drug combined.

How many commercials are we bombarded with every day advertising some prescription drug. "Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, suicidal thoughts or actions, or death...." Yea, give me some of that.

Legal drugs are far more "abused" than illegal drugs, not to mention the increased negative side effects of a synthetic drug relative to a naturally occurring substance such as Marijuana. And it's facts such as these that make the "legalization" argument for illegal drugs such an absurd one. For instance -- how many people have died from a "pot overdose" (I've never heard of such a thing) versus ANY of the "legal" drugs?

Perhaps the reason prescription drugs are legal while naturally occurring substances such as POT are illegal is because drug companies don't like the competition, as opposed to the altruistic assertion that government is seeking to "protect the children"? http://lionsdenmedia.hubpages...

I believe that they're substantially more dangerous than most illegal drugs.Look at all the commercials that ask "Did you take such and such" you may be entitled to compensation or your next of kin if it actually killed you.The scary part is that all of them were F.D.A approved.I'd be willing to bet that legal drugs are responsible for more deaths by far than illegal ones and cause irreversible physical and psychological damage to humans.I'll take illegal drugs over legal any day of the week-oh wait a minute -I already do.
