Are 'Legal Drugs' as Dangerous as Illegal?

Just because a substance is legal, that doesn't mean it's safe. With new substances hitting the market on a regular basis, it's impossible for authorities and experts to keep track of them, meaning there's very little reliable information available. A while back, a handful of teens were hospitalized after taking synthetic marijuana -- cause enough for concern. But this weekend a 20-year-old man died after taking a substance called Benzo Fury at a Scotland music festival.

David Liddell, director of Scottish Drugs Forum, said in a statement, "Benzo Fury is a so-called legal high -- or New Psychoactive Drug -- which appears to have a similar effect to Ecstasy. It's one of the new legal highs developed to get around the banning of similar compounds ... As it's not been around for long there is little information on long-term effects and as with all these drugs, there's no knowing what's actually in them. The names are just to market them and may bear no relation to what's in them." Do you think these "legal drugs" are just as dangerous as the illegal ones?

They can be addictive but they are usually prepared carefully and meet legal requirements. My father was a pharmacist.

More so. They have basically found a way to addict people who would never take illegal drugs to prescriptions by lobbying doctors to prescribe a "pill" as a cure instead of good old fashioned healthy diet and exercise. They'll never find a "cure" as long as the money in in the pill...

"Just ask your doctor if (this drug) is right for you." Doesn't that make your doctor a drug dealer? I have two suggestions for many peoples problems. 1. Eat healthy. 2. Get off your ass and burn more calories than you take in. I'm 72, still work, and ride a bike from three to six miles nearly every day. I don't take ANY prescription drugs and feel pretty damn good for an old fart.

You must know my Dad . lol. He'd say the same thing. I'm with you . Get out, and walk, jog, ride a bycicle, go for a swim. Get out of the house, forget the cable-t.v., computer, cell-phone, ect. LIVE. I go swimming at a lake, or river, ride my bycicle, go to the gym, or work out with my weight bench, or go for a walk . Get that blood circulating .

Actually, far more people die as a result of perfectly legal prescription drugs than due to politically-incorrect experimentation. Hospitals and doctors don't advertise their mistakes, however. The media sensationalizes the few "illegal" accidents for weeks, making them seem more numerous than they are.

Absolutely! When I read the warnings on simple cold meds and pain meds I quit taking both.
I found out if you take meds for a cold you get over it in about 6 to 8 days. If you take nothing you get over it in about a week. LOL If a Tylenol will help your pain you aren't hurting very much anyway, so why bother.

Let it be pointed out that one of the main factors to be considered is how the drugs are used and their purposes
The presently illegal drugs are consumed by misguided people that lust for a thrill while the drugs are consumed for the "sole purpose" of getting stoned, high , wasted, blitzed, bombed, high as a kite and a long list of other descriptive "stoner" or "pot head" terms used to describe the mental and physical intoxicating effects of the "illegal " drugs they choose to consume.
The prescription drugs are manufactured and supplied and prescribed for medical reasons ...not specifically and or deliberately for the thrill of getting "intoxicated" on the prescription drugs...although many of them do result in intoxication and many of them are highly addicting along with other detrimental side effects that are often enough proven to be deadly.
Are the legal drugs as dangerous???
That is kind of a trick question and not easy to answer but basically they are not as dangerous because they are manufactured and supplied and administered with warnings and rules and regulations and guide lines and they are not sold for pleasure seeking purposes to be consumed by the misguided druggies and people that can not control their lust for the intoxicating effects of the substances.

As for the actual problems caused by the prescription drugs there is no doubt they have proven to be deadly and therefore the word dangerous can correctly be applied to the various drugs...but thay are also life saving at the same time in most cases.
Yes they can be understood to be "dangerous" and proven so considering the various toxic substances used in the manufacturing of the prescription drugs along with the abundance of prescription drugs the citizens are continually assaulted with by the big pharmaceutical companies.

Meantime, even if the presently illegal drugs where to be legalised the main difference will still be the "reasons" for consuming the drugs.

The presently illegal drugs are classified as Non Essential, Recreational purpose intoxicants.

The drug manufacturing companies, although sinister in some aspects, do not supply the drugs to the public at large specifically wanting or deliberately trying to have their customer base become addicted to their products...but they do know well that many of their products are addicting and or their customer base grows dependant on their products which is good for their business, of course.
On the other hand, the suppliers of illegal non essential, recreational drugs supply them knowing full well their non essential, recreational purpose drugs can be addicting and or their customers can and often do become dependant on the drugs they supply and they know full well how detrimental the drugs are while there is "no" accountability practised on the illegal suppliers part.
Yes, that is one of the very good reasons to legalise the presently illegal drugs but it still does not change the fact that the overwhelming majority of people will continue to consume those classified drugs for the sole puposes of recreation and personal intoxication....not for medical puposes.
The illegal drug pushers want their clientle to become addicted and or dependant on the intoxicants that they supply while the consumers eagerly consume them for the sole purpose of pleasure seeking thrills....an entirely personal choice.

If and when the presently illegal drugs do become legal to supply and consume the manufacturers and suppliers will basically be given the go ahead to intoxicate the public at large and basically be given the rights to legally get you addicted to their non essential recreational purpose intoxicating substances.

A conundrum if ever there was.

Sure they can be, if used incorrectly. I never could understand the whole drug culture, mostly because I like to be in control of myself. I don't want stuff going down where I cannot do something about it. I love reality and if things suck I work to make them better.
I read the article and it really does not go in depth to just how many new drugs/chemicals are made per year, which averages around a thousand.

Yes legal drugs are just as bad as illegal drugs if taken in large amounts of dosages or in combination with other drugs or with alcohol. I think a lot of the people that are into drugs just find anything that can get them high wither it's using illegal drugs or legal drugs it doesn't matter.

That is the problem in a nutshell! The drug is not dangerous, the law banning the drug is dangerous!

Another example: While in High School, a friend of mine asked me "Pete is it dangerous to take a hit of speed and run a race with the track team?" Other people were telling me left and right "Peter if you're his friend you won't let him do it!" I let him do it but only after explaining to him and also these other people telling me not to let him do it: Taking a hit of speed and running a race is not dangerous. Medically, it is not dangerous! What IS dangerous is not resting after the race is over because you are tired but you will feel like you are ready to run the Marathon from start!" THAT is where most people go wrong when using a stimulant and that is why it is best done only under a Doctor's close supervision. What I had my friend do was to immediately sit down and drink a large amount of beer to calm him down to where he wouldn't keep going while tired!

I meant to say no. Prescription drugs are often far more dangerous. According to the FDA 100,000 people die from adverse reactions to prescription drugs. How many people die from Marijuana?
