Are 'Legal Drugs' as Dangerous as Illegal?

Just because a substance is legal, that doesn't mean it's safe. With new substances hitting the market on a regular basis, it's impossible for authorities and experts to keep track of them, meaning there's very little reliable information available. A while back, a handful of teens were hospitalized after taking synthetic marijuana -- cause enough for concern. But this weekend a 20-year-old man died after taking a substance called Benzo Fury at a Scotland music festival.

David Liddell, director of Scottish Drugs Forum, said in a statement, "Benzo Fury is a so-called legal high -- or New Psychoactive Drug -- which appears to have a similar effect to Ecstasy. It's one of the new legal highs developed to get around the banning of similar compounds ... As it's not been around for long there is little information on long-term effects and as with all these drugs, there's no knowing what's actually in them. The names are just to market them and may bear no relation to what's in them." Do you think these "legal drugs" are just as dangerous as the illegal ones?

Legal drugs kill more people than all of the illegal ones combined - apart from, of course, Cannabis that in and of itself has never killed anyone, and yet which is illegal... makes sense.

Not saying it would be impossible but I doubt if the Cert.OD read "He died from smoking a joint."

No it did not say that. One of the oldest and sadest cases was my friend Dickie. He was 16 at the time and got so high he tought he could fly and jumped off the roof of his house. he'd be close to 60 now. Also all my friends that died are not my beliefs, they were real live incidents. For anyone to assume you know eveything that happened in my life is simple minded. While some are so cavailere about drugs I can assure their parents didn't think it was just a lark.

Did your friends drink or use other drugs? I would have a very hard time believing you if you said "no". While people have been known to jump off roofs while on booze or LSD there is no documented incident that I have ever heard of where ANYONE did it while on pot alone.
Also, We are not being cavailere, we are speaking from knowledge and not just emotion.

You are so full of it. I can fully and confidently say that there is not one single case of anyone dying from marijuana use. I have taken several courses related to substance use and abuse for an alcohol and drug abuse major. You are either not being completly honest or you are an outright lying idiot.

Got proof of that? There are no recorded incidents of death by cannabis. There might be idiocy, like smoking up and trying to operate major machinery, like a car, but that's not the marijuana's fault.

Illegal drugs do not contain scripts (Writings/instructions/dosage... they have not been pre-scribed and therefore carry an inherently greater danger than their "legally" prescribed counterparts.

True, but this is not about pharmaceutical drugs... it's about the legal hallucinogens and party drugs, made from various research chemicals and the like, but sold legally (as research chemicals, bath salts, incense, etc).

Since I've never heard of some of the drugs mentioned, I can't really say they're safer than illegal versions of those. However, I would like to see Marijuana legalized, simply because it would cut down on trafficing, violence, and inferior quality. If the united states could grow its own pot, tax and control the quality of it, it would be a money maker for the US just like tobacco, wine, beer, or liquor.

Many people famous and not have died from a lethal combination of alcohol and prescribed medications. People get careless and forgetful when they drink. Bill Holden is one example and a famous columnist from the 1950's named Dorothy Kilgallen to mention just a couple of well known alcohol and drug related deaths.

Are abusers of drugs illegal? On fairly rare occasions a drug may kill an innocent user but if no drug - NOT TAKEN has hurt anyone. 99% of the time it is an intentional stupid human error that leads to abuse.

I wouldn't say MOST people who drink exhibit a lack of self control... alcoholism is a disease that affects many, but not most, drinkers.
