Are 'Legal Drugs' as Dangerous as Illegal?

Just because a substance is legal, that doesn't mean it's safe. With new substances hitting the market on a regular basis, it's impossible for authorities and experts to keep track of them, meaning there's very little reliable information available. A while back, a handful of teens were hospitalized after taking synthetic marijuana -- cause enough for concern. But this weekend a 20-year-old man died after taking a substance called Benzo Fury at a Scotland music festival.

David Liddell, director of Scottish Drugs Forum, said in a statement, "Benzo Fury is a so-called legal high -- or New Psychoactive Drug -- which appears to have a similar effect to Ecstasy. It's one of the new legal highs developed to get around the banning of similar compounds ... As it's not been around for long there is little information on long-term effects and as with all these drugs, there's no knowing what's actually in them. The names are just to market them and may bear no relation to what's in them." Do you think these "legal drugs" are just as dangerous as the illegal ones?

Sure. Like I said, physically, LSD is pretty safe. But it's the emotional & mental affects that can be quite dangerous.

I've never indulged in it, myself. I've often wanted to, but am a genuine product of the Nancy R Just Say No generation. I have a healthy respect for all drugs & since I still need the few brain cells I have left that remain functional, I suppose I'll wait until I'm quite a bit older to take my first little trip.
Mushrooms are about the most toxic thing I've used. They're absolutely magnificent & I highly recommend them... particularly for any sort of music event or party held outdoors.

More Oxys are prescribed in FL that the whole US; and more Oxys are prescribed in the US than the rest of the world. Over twice the deaths are from prescription drugs as illegal ones.

Any drug, if misused is dangerous. Legal drugs, both prescription and over the counter legal drugs (such as fake weed, bath salts, etc) are becoming a huge problem.

Anything can become toxic when used improperly... You can kill yourself by drinking too much water. Drugs are especially tricky... I am too afraid of the HPV vaccine to even attempt that. There are no long term studies, I mean it seems safe enough, but I'm good I suppose.

Still, I see no long term reports; those only indicate a less than 7 year study. Thank you though.

Legality has nothing to do with danger, it only means the FDA has permitted the use of said chemical cocktail for medicinal purposes on the open market. Cocaine and Marijuana are two examples that are widely used in medicine....also two of the most widely abused substances on the planet...too much of anything will usually kill someone even for something as benign as water.

Grace to you, Glory to God!

Legal drugs prescribed by your doctor and dispensed by a pharmacist are much safer than what comes out of the bag the drug dealer on the corner is peddling.

I should have specified legal drugs taken as directed -- overdoses and abuse are not in the scope of what I was discussing.

Legal drugs kill people every day. No one talks about that. The war on drugs needs to be waged against the FDA the pharmaceutical industry & the politicians who cater to them, receive any money from them. Legal drugs are probably worse in my opinion.

All the potheads and drug users voted Yes. I dont see how anything compares to crack, meth, psychedelics, or even heroin. You can say, certain pain killers are as strong and addicting, but heroin can be dirty.

I am not a pothead, I do not smoke, I dont even really drink, but I still believe that legal drugs are becoming a huge issue and can be just as dangerous, if not more so than illegal drugs.
  • Pm Laura 2012/06/15 04:27:06
    Pm
Sure they are an issue. Doctors freely prescribe them and in a lot of the cases when they are not needed. People get addicted and abuse them.
No where near as bad as crack, heroin, meth, and psychedelics

Have you ever seen some of the effects of taking Ritalin? How about Tegretol? Have you investigated any studies? Sit down, shut up, and keep your "keyboard commando" in place before you even think about talking out your ass again about what you "think" is more dangerous than something else.
  • Pm James 2012/06/15 04:28:11
    Pm
I must of offended a pothead to get such a nice response. Side effects of people abusing prescription drugs are bad, but they still have a use...Crack, meth, heroin, and psychedelics have no medical use.
