Are College Graduates More Likely to Land a Job? (The Bureau of Labor Says So)

It's not exactly the best time to be getting out of college right now, with unemployment still hovering around 8 percent, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a college degree is better than nothing. Way better, in fact. They report just 3.9 percent unemployment among college graduates, compared to 8.1 percent among high school graduates and 13 percent among high school dropouts.

However, there's one major catch. That 3.9 percent unemployment for college grads does not include anyone under the age of 25, and according to Good.is, more than half of college graduates under 25 were unemployed last year. And while any employment is better than none, Good.is also notes that the Bureau doesn't specify what type of employment these grads are under. So what do you think, are college grads actually better off than those who never got a degree?

Depends on what kind of field they are in I would guess, but it is always better to have more education than equal to or not enough.

Yes, they are are. Last figures I saw had 4yr degree grads at 4.3% and Advanced degrees around 4%. Inspite of the many jobs that have been created, the public sector lost around 500,000 jobs in the height of the near collapse of our economic system, and many of those jobs have not been replaced. Additionally, reports have shown that nearly one-third of the stimulus money went to states for bridge repair/replacement and infrastructure work, and although some states are busy replacing bridges, repairing them and roads, other states have used the money to buy their materials from Chinese companies and some have even sort Chinese workers to perform the work rather than hiring Public Works people to do the work.

No way! Half of College graduates are moving back in with Mom and Dad now in this horrible economy! Many small to mid sized companies are looking for people with years of experience now rather than a kid with a degree. College is really not worth getting into huge school loan debt for in this economy. Watch this video below!

It cracks me up to see people actually believe unemployment is at 8 percent. They can just say any number and you will believe them...? College grads are in line for a rude awakening. They might have a slightly better change though, so long as the dumb employers continue to believe college is worth something. As a college grad I can tell you a degree means nothing. College taught me... little to nothing.

The job market is so overwhelmed with applicants that entry level positions are requiring a degree. Want to be a receptionist? You need a bachelors degree.

It really depends on the person and the job. My friends who recently got out of college with their degrees had searched for jobs but only one of them got a job, why? Because he's a real charmer. On the other hand the girl is kind of awkward and she knows how to do things but you really need to show her how. Then if you go into something like acting then the competition is going to be FIERCE because even people who don't have degrees are going to try out, but if you become a nurse it'll be easier because there is a higher demand in the medical field.

Not really, I started my career after dropping out of college, never went back, neither did most of my close friends who are now with me on top of the world.

Anyone can do it with the right attitude, mind set, and all that.

I voted yes because my son just finished his 3rd year of college and I hope he is able to use his degree. I have a degree and it has helped me - not to the level that I had hoped but it did help. The only problem with having a degree is that most employers also want relevant experience to go along with it - and so it's hard for new graduates. I told my son to make sure he gets a good internship...crossing my fingers!!

The vast majority of jobs seem to require a degree in mathmatics, engineering etc...... but the only real jobs that pay a "lot" of money ($50,00 or more) seem to have gone overseas ?? The big openings seem to be in the "service sector"......MCDONALDS, BURGER KING, WENDYS, BARTENDER, COFFEE BARISTER ?? GET THE DRIFT ?? LOW PAYING JOBS WITH NO BENEFITS !!!
