I think both the atheists and fundamentalists have a real short sighted view of the world. They are more related than what appears to separate them.

I am one and I'm pretty cool. Most atheists aren't bad people at all. There's always the extreme in any group though.

I agree that assuming Christianity is the only religion connected with fundamentalism is wrong. If you read my post [above], I included the three major faiths -- Christianity, Islam and Judaism -- in my answer. NO religion has a monopoly on extremism, fanaticism and zealotry, all things that not only bother me greatly, but in general go against the tenets of each faith. You have posed a very good question on this subject!

Ah, the hallmark of a true believer. He or she will say, "My people never did any of those atrocities history says we did."

In my San Diego neighborhood, we have a nutcase who wears a Nazi brownshirt uniform and goes door to door handing out very poorly written tracts. According to him, the REAL NAZIs didn't make the death camps.

Christians were responsible for the inquisition, witch trials, burning people at the stake, boiling people in oil, and castrating choir boys. OK?

I am a Jew, I was never a Christian, even when I wasn't Jewish, and yes there are people with Jewish sounding last names that are not Jewish. I converted 30 years ago. Did i say Christians DIDN'T do any of the aforementioned atrocities?

No, atheists are the opposite of the fundamentally religious.

But it's popular amongst religionists to claim this, since irrational hatred for the non-religious is still part of the religious indoctrination received by most religious children (see photo attached to "top comment" for an example of this).
