Are Ads on Books a Good Idea? (China's Starting to Do It)

Ads are everywhere. They're all over the Internet, dotted along the highway, in the middle of your favorite television shows, plastered on the walls of the mall. It's how businesses work together to generate interest and revenue. But it's also a double-edged sword, because no one particularly likes ads. We're naturally repelled. Unfortunately, it looks like the infection is spreading. The Chinese publishing industry, threatened by the success of tablets and e-books, is starting to put ads on book covers.

According to China Daily, "My Son" by Marina Lu, mother of cello virtuoso Yo-Yo Ma, is the first book to feature an ad on its cover. It's not as blatant as you might fear -- it's actually on the back cover, and it's apparently just the logo of a textile manufacturer. But Jinghua Aobo, a Chinese advertising agency, has already signed deals with more than 100 publishers. Right now it's just an experiment, but the potential could be worrisome. Do you think it will actually help the publishing industry, or will it backfire?

It's the best way to ensure a book jacket would get thrown away in my house. If I wanted ads, I'd read a magazine.

No no a thousand times no. I dislike the cards inserted through magazines and books also. Before I will read a magazine I tear everyone out of the mag. What a nusiance they are.

Except for the fact that your magazine would cost twice as much without them.

Yes that's true. But...nothing says I have to buy the magazine. At least not yet.

Nothing says you have to buy a book with ads either. It's the beauty of our system. Just avoid the publishers that do this. If they all do this, exercise your right to not buy books anymore.

At first I thought, "Why not?" But then I thought if it catches on... it won't just be a logo in the corner on the back, the advertising will just keep growing & growing.

Makes me think of a movie called Idiocracy ... When they showed a TV... the "Show" took up a square in the center of the screen of about 20% of the territory - - while surrounding the "Show" were advertisement blocks constantly running.

    Drink Brawndo, it has electrolytes!

FYI: There are 2 versions of the Kindle.. With Ads for $79, and without Ads for $130 - - so in a way, they are already doing books with ads.

I don't like it, but it is part of the world we live in. As we move more and more to electronic devices to read, we tolerate the ads and just move on. The number of ads that appear on my Fire every time I open the book I am reading or an app I use is huge.
It does seem that the print ads in my Sunday newspaper are shrinking, but they still take up more paper than the newspaper content itself. (I pull out the ads and throw in the recycle bin without looking at any of it).

Good way to piss people off. There are already entire programs on TV that are basically 30+minute ads.....and that's the "main event". There are sites that feel like they have more ads than content. We don't need ads on books, we need to cut back on how many ads we already have.

I'm sorry, if you're threatened by something (like say eBooks), does tossing on ads help? No. Getting the ads into the eBook versions will, because then people will hate the eBooks for having ads, and go back to hardcopies. Putting ads on your hard copy book will instead get more people to want eBooks, because they don't have ads!

I wasn't being defensive, just stating a fact. And the way you worded your comment, you were implying that you didn't think anyone read books anymore. What does patience have to do with anything?

Magazines and newspapers are periodicals. Books last much, much longer. The point is...further down the road, the ad may become irrelevant. You buy the book used tens of years of later for a TV show that's cancelled or a product that got recalled and it's kind of pointless. Then again, I have read old comics and old ads are kind of fun to see. Still, books are not the kind of media that should be disgraced with ads.

Except for other books. I have no problem seeing an ad for a related book in the back of a novel.

But that being said, printed books are quickly going by the way-side. Electronic books are here & staying, whether we like it or not. Publishing houses are being dwindled down to just about nothing.
Oh sure, there will likely always be one or two out there putting out coffee-table gifts, etc. But the real market, especially for fiction, is in e-books & THAT'S where we need to keep advertising out... at least out of the pages. Who cares if it's on a cover? No one really looks at the cover.
But, then again, were there an ad for some immoral firm/org on the cover of a book, I wouldn't buy it (my definition of immoral is likely different from yours & yours different from his/hers, etc. & so forth). So, I would think that it might hurt sales for some. (With Amazon, there really is no book that can't be "published" anymore... anyone can do it.)

Figure out the logic here; magazines okay' we're accustomed to it. But to put ads on" or inside a book or novel, would absolutely be very annoying.

unless they are giving the book to me free, I do not want to see the Pepsi commercial featuring a dead guy telling me that drink rocks.

What if they are giving the book to you for a discounted rate because of the advertising, similar to Kindle's ad-supported version?
  • Mike unaff 2012/05/09 22:16:59

free or get it away from me, they want me to pay for ads .anyway you look at it, they are not gonna make me pay for the "privilege" of seeing their advertisements in a book I purchased to get away from commercials in the first place.
