Whether it’s in Saturday morning cartoons, Hollywood Movies, video games, or comic books, Arabs in US media are usually pictured as mean, slimy, underhanded villains. Movies like Back to the Future and True Lies, Superman and Tarzan Comic Books, and America’s Army video game are examples where Arabs are portrayed as evil, violent, and in opposition to the good characters.army video game examples arabs portrayed evil violent opposition characters

How does the portrayal of Arabs affect the way we think about and treat Arabs?

It’s not often that Americans see the real side, where most Arabs lead ordinary lives. The media is often the strongest force in shaping one’s understanding of a people or culture. It helps create an image of a culture, so that when we see movies with an Arab villain, it leads us to think that all Arabs are like that. Teachers are also influenced by the way Arabs are shown in the media, which in turn influences how they teach American youth about Arab people, culture, and history.

Between September 11, 2001 and March 27, 2002, over 600 people were violently assaulted, 45 of them at school, because they were Arab or perceived as Arab. Hundreds of Arabs, and those perceived as Arab, have been discriminated against at their work. How America portrays Arabs is how the Arabs portrays America, who's really the good guy? Obviously American would say that they're the good guys and the Arabs could make the same claim.

I think the media doesn't show what American people or Arab people are really like. The Arab people I have met immediately don't like me. I'm a gun toting pork eater in a big car. It has been told to them over and over. I stay away.

I don't live in America so I can't speak for the US. If you are talking about the media they are often depicted as ranting Islamists on the news or terrorists in the movies. I watched the documentary 'Reel Bad Arabs'

I think to a large extent with all peoples they play on perceived stereotypes and its fed by current events ie: Arabs and terror and/or Islam and Arabs and terror.

This as been done and is still done with people: Jews, Blacks, Chinese, Indian etc.

A lot of the media that I see is on the news. It is the Arab people themselves behaving badly this also has an affect on the way people view Arab societies. We see the hate signs, the lies and propaganda in children's books and newspapers, the aftermath of suicide bombings. the internecine warfare between differing factions, the marches and chantings , the ravings of hate-filled clerics and other leaders constantly threatening the west and Israel. We see a never ending litany of chaos. Even the Koran is filled with verses about killings non-muslims. It seems to be a culture at war with itself and all others.

Wow, that's a very level headed comment. I agree with you. The majority will always portray and minority or other in a disparagingly or stereotypical way.

For example if I said what comes into your mind when you think of an American, Italian person - immediately one would think of a stereotype of that person and the same with a nation.

It's called institutional racism. Read the book from Man to Superman. How the White man and the Black man where created here in America.

Hollywood, like many American mainstream institutions, has the ability to socially condition a great deal of the populous and therefore our society. The ramifications are overwhelmingly obvious. Our media has a very long history of portraying African American, Native Americans, 'Arabs and at times Asians in a very negative way and here in America there is no conscience or acknowledgement regarding its inherent bigotry. People are going to deny it because they aren't racist and they are looking at this from a personal assesment and defining the nation how you view the world and other people.

Do you not think that part of the stereotyping is based on current events, peoples ignorance, fear and perceived cultural, ethnic, religious or gender stereotypes? Do you think that some stereotypes are basis in any truth, I'm just curious? Many minorities get stereotyped its a way for the majority to feel better about themselves. For example if one looks at the Arab media look at how their other 'minority' is portrayed, its a sad part of the human condition.

I'm so glad that the anti-Arab/muslim bigotry hasn't been translated into society and most people are thinking and decent. I've just had a look at the FBI's statistics on Hate Crimes:

First of all i loved the Arrivals series...really opens your mind. (After which i watch Abdul Hashem's 500 episode long Dajjal series :P To bad its so hard to find it online now since their original website got hacked...again).

This whole anti-arab thing was meant to condition the population of the West into not caring if barbarians (zionists) massacre the Arabs. To see proof of this, all you have to do is look towards Palestine. Even a mentally retarded idiot could tell that crime against humanity are being carried out their by the zionists, yet people refuse to listen because they have been conditioned since birth

    Example
crime humanity carried zionists people refuse listen conditioned birth Jaffar

The Quran makes clear difference between the Children of Israel (Twelve sons of Jacob and their descendants) and the Jews (originally/historically a group of violent rebels who went agaisnt the interests and commands of the true rabbis).

Quran calls those rebels "apes and pigs", not the Children of Israel. You may go check the verse to see that i am not lying. Nowhere in the Quran are the Children of Israel are disrespected, instead, they are honored.

Today, those historical "jews" may be either the zionists or Ashkenazim jews. This i am not sure about, i would go for them being zionists.

That is great but unfortunately that is not the common thought by many Muslims in the Middle East nor is this difference taught in the books that Saudi and Palestianian children read.

The rest of us do not make a distinction between the groups of Jews that you mention. All Hebrews/Jews are descendants of Abraham, Izak and Jacob and none is the descended from apes or pigs.

Your definition of Zionism could also be a lot different than that of other groups of people - myself included. To us Zionism/Zionists are supporters of the state of Israel - where ever the Jewish people come from throughout the earth.

And that is exactly the reason why i am here gaining knowledge. I intend to go and spread it some day in all of the places you mentioned. I am sick of bearded men spreading hypocrisy in my religion. Something must be done.

We may not make such a distinction but God certainly did. Even in the Old testament (if i am not mistaken) did not God destroy the nation of Israel and left only Judea? He destroyed Israel because the people there strayed away from the covenant and disrespected the rabbis. There were many sects of Judaism during the diaspora, God did not like one of them, the original "jews" and called them apes and pigs because of their actions. If Islam was to have a sect like the original "jews", it would be Al-Qaeda or the Taliban which blows up mosques.

That is my definition of zionism too. The zionists want a state of israel, i have no problem with that since God mention in Islam that israel will become a nation once again for the jews, my problem lies with the fact that these zionists will then go around demolishing Palestinian homes, killing whole families, murdering women and children, destroying property and farm fields, all because they think they have some divine right to the land.

Good please do gain knowledge and help other Muslims - you certainly have your work cut out for you. The message of hate and misinformation is very strong.

Also if you keep reading you will find that Adonai restored the WHOLE HOUSE OF ISRAEL. - Ezekiel 36. 37 and 38 . RESTORATION.

    Yes, the Quran confirms that:

"And thereafter We [Allah] said to the Children of Israel: 'Dwell securely in the Promised Land. And when the last warning will come to pass, we will gather you together in a mingled crowd.'" [Qur'an 17:104]

But the covenant was made with the Children of Israel, the true jews. It was never meant for the zionists or any other sect.

You didn't ready Ezekiel!! God's call is irrevocable HE SWORE BY HIMSELF! He promised the DESCENDANTS OF Abraham, Izak and Jacob. His call is irrevocable. If Muslims really believed this your people would stop trying to eliminate the nation of Israel which clearly will be defended with the help of the MESSIAH HIMSELF. It is not by Power, it is not by might, it is BY THE SPIRIT OF THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL that Israel will stand. Muslims are breaking themselves on the Rock of God's WORD. One small nation against 280 million Arab muslims plus their supporters. The U.S. has NEVER fought for Israel - they have defended themselves.

I DID read Ezekiel. Well most of what was on the link you gave me.

I never said that God did not promise them the promised land, i said it was promised to the Children of Israel, the Twelve lost tribes of Israel...but WHO are these tribes now?

    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/...

Research shows that these tribes settled in places that are now Iran, Afghanistan/Pakistan, Arabian peninsula, and a bit of Africa. These are the Children to whom the land was promised., not the fake zionists today who have not a single drop of blood of the Lost Tribes. The Messiah will indeed protect the Holy Land, but the Holy Land does not belong to those who currently inhabit it. They are wrongfully occupying a land that was never promised to them. Following Judaism will not make you a descendant of Abraham. The land was promised to the descendants who now live in Arabia and Afghanistan. Or so i believe. Correct me if i am wrong

We do not know where the ten lost tribes are - but they WILL be restored.the Word says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth." Isaiah 49

You and I of course differ on the Nation of Israel being legitimate. G_d Himself has restored them to the land in a most miraculous way.I know also that G_d has great plans for all of the children of Abraham Arabs and Jews alike. I hate what is happening now so many are needlessly suffering. I do not have any answers to the present war between Jews and Arabs but I know that our Creator does. Go with God MOJ.
