Another Unarmed Black Youth Gunned Down, This Time 13-Year-Old Darius Simmons
By Kenneth Quinnell

June 08, 2012 08:00 AM

In the latest of a string of young black males being gunned down by police or so-called "security" forces, 13-year-old Darius Simmons was shot and killed by John Henry Spooner, who accused Simmons of theft and then proceeded to shoot the unarmed and nonviolent youth in front of his horrified mother. Simmons is one of 30 black people killed this year alone by people working in law enforcement or legitimate or illegitimate "security" work. 16 of these killings have happened since Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman. Defenders of what can only be called an epidemic at this point suggest that the victims are usually engaged in illegal activity or are "bad" kids, but in almost none of these cases is anyone engaged in any activity that would even remotely warrant the death penalty they were given without due process. Many of them were good people who did nothing wrong.

Darius Simmons was by all accounts a good kid. The fun loving 6th grader was simply moving a garbage can in front of his home when his neighbor, 75 year old John Henry Spooner confronted him with a shotgun and accused him of stealing from his home. Darius, who was in school the time of the robbery, denied being involved with the theft. John Henry Spooner then proceed to shoot Darius in his chest, while he had his hands raise showing Spooner he was unarmed. His mom, who was watching in horror, ran to Darius to see if she could find a pulse, she couldn’t. Darius, 13 years old and unarmed, was murdered in cold blood in front of his mother.

According to Milwaukee Alderman Bob Donovan, he had breakfast with Spooner an hour before the shooting and Spooner told him he suspected Darius of the crime and was upset that the police hadn’t done anything about it. Spooner then told the Alderman, that there were other ways of dealing with these problems. That qualifies as premeditated murder of a 13 year old boy. To make matters worse, the family only lived next to Spooner for a month.

John Henry Spooner was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide. A judge set cash bond of $300,000.

“Black youth are being stereotyped, targeted, and killed by law enforcement and now community vigilantes. This is bigger than the Castle Doctrine (Stand your ground law) , this is about our country’s continued refusal to acknowledge that we are still suffering from the sins of our forefathers. And the more we try to push the racial boogieman under the cover, the more it is going to bite us in the ass.” – Biko Baker

Spooner shot Simmons with a 9mm handgun five feet away from him in the chest, in front of his mother.

Darius was shot once in the chest with his hands raised. He ran to escape and collapsed at the corner, while Spooner attempted to shoot him in the back, and tried to fire a third shot.

After police arrived, Darius’s body remained on the sidewalk, while police questioned his mother, Patricia Larry, in a squad car for approximately two hours.

During the police investigation of the shooting, they searched Ms. Larry’s home again. Finding nothing, they then proceeded to arrest his older brother for having truancy tickets.

In contrast, Spooner’s family was allowed to go into the home and remove “items” despite it being the crime scene.

John Spooner was given a $300,000 bail, (only $30,000 would have to be posted for him to be free). This is uncommon when the charge is murder in the first degree.

This latest shooting certainly brings to mind the story of Emmett Till, the young boy who was wrongfully murdered in the 1950s and whose death served as an early catalyst of the civil rights movement. How many more kids like Darius Simmons and Trayvon Martin will have to die before we do something to change the laws and culture that not only allow these killings, but encourage them.

This is an outrage. This Mr. Spooner, what TV and radio networks would we guess he consumes? Think it may have been Fox? Or maybe a Fox wannabe? I think it may be. This country is sick, and it's being sickened by the effects of Fox, and the "conservatives" who back it. The mercenary immigrant Murdoch has been found ethically unfit to run a corporation in the UK, so the party of Frank Luntz and Karl Rove, over here, is going to have to prevent any investigation that would harm Fox, it's bed partner. This may require a few plane crashes or break-ins, but if you're going to destroy a country to benefit the wealthiest 1%, someone has to sacrifice. Never be distracted from this one fact: It's Fox that empowered the "conservatives" and put this country in the mess it's in now.

How sad! My heart goes out to his mother and family. The fact that the boy's mother was questioned for two hours while her son's body lay on the sidewalk in front of her is inexcusable.

When you only provide information that is unfairly leaning towards one side, you are doing a disservice to yourself and others who read this. There are just as many cases of black crime on whites.

INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON RACE, WHY DON'T WE ALL WORK TOGETHER TO TRY AND FIX THE PROBLEMS. Focusing on race simply makes the hate continue.

i have a very hard time finding national news stories on those cases. It's upsetting that people are so willing to be blinded by color that they would disregard the hatred of blacks against other races and unfairly direct attention towards the hatred of races against blacks.

I agree.. and unfortunately it kind of boils down to a few things.. First, Blacks against another race, the majority of people feel that this is going to happen and does happen all the time so it is not news worthy or anything new.. 2nd, any race vs a black race is seen as very newsworthy just to sell a story or a paper.. They **a lot of black people** feel that they are still so called put down and beneath the rest of us.. So Yeah, they bitch about racism all the time.. While in reality, if they would just shut their freaking mouths up and do something then it would actually calm down a lot.. People say that it is the white people w/ the problem, Well, I completely disagree, it is the black community w/ the problem.. For example:
I know a couple of cab drivers who are black.. They will not pick up any black person for a fare, because even they say that black people are terrible about everything from being nice to paying to bills to tipping..
I know a couple of black people who are in the construction business in FL, They take very few jobs from black people.. And, they usually add an extra XX percent to the total quote just because they know that once they give the quote to them the client will come back and try to cheapen it up as much as possible and then be ...

Several of the Mexican/cuban companies I know will not hire a black person to work for them because they say they are lazy...
And the scary part is, I can go on and on w/ different stories about this all day long.. Now, this sounds/is pretty stereotypical but when u sit there and see it on a day to day basis.. It does make u think about how true it can be.. And, yes, it doesn't matter what race you are, there are always some really lazy and sleezy people in every race, and there are always really great people in every race....
But, when it comes down to it, when a black person will not/does not want to do anything for another black person.. THERE LIES THE PROBLEM.....

What doe this have to do with the Zimmerman case?
They are nowhere near one another, nor does Stand Your Ground have anything to do with it.
Martin beat the tar out of Zimmerman's head against a 4 inch thick concrete slab (murder weapon) and got his ass blown away as a result of his own actions.

I'd have to see the actual details written by a credible source with some facts to back it up and the entire set of details revealed.

For instance, this article states that Spooner confronted Simmons with a shotgun and later states he shot him in the chest with a 9mm, attempted to shoot him in the back and tried to fire a third shot.

What the Hell is all that supposed to mean? Creative writing run amok.

What transpired between Spooner holding a shotgun and now he suddenly has a 9mm?

70% of all black kids are born to single mothers. Once they start addressing that statistic, many of the problems will take care of themselves.

I'm starting to adopt an attitude that they can keep bumping each other off and see what's left when the dust settles.

Works well, except when innocents get caught in the crossfire. If there was a way to eliminate that, I am all for letting them kill themselves off. Another or part of the issue is lack of strong positive male role models. Sports figures and rap artists do not make great male role models, for anybody

13? How awful. Didn't it ever occur to Spooner that the reason the police weren't investigating the child for the theft was because of the whole alibi thing?

How is this, in the broadest of imaginations, even remotely similar to Officer involved shootings or Security. This is a single individual homeowner who for whatever reason believed this youth had committed a burglary of his home. This is a single individual who had issues. This article is nothing more than an attempt to continue fanning small fires in an attempt to make something much bigger, which it is not

But it does show how quickly people are ready to use a gun and kill someone. They act as judge, jury, and executioner. What is important is that an old senile man had a loaded gun and used it on a 13 years old kid. In the Southwest it happens all too frequently that the shooter is an officer of the law. With so many people having and being willing to use a gun even the police are nervous enough to shoot first and ask questions later. America is still living the wild, wild, west, I guess.

They didn't have much to say about the 40 shootings and 10 deaths over Memorial weekend citing that it's only a slight bit higher than last year.
200 homicides in 2012 so far compared to 134 in 2011 and a 49% increase is not alarming?

Not nearly as sensational when black youths are killing one another. Same thing happening in Seattle Rainier district. Only news worthy because of the bystanders who get caught in the crossfire, or the brashness of the shooting

I saw a documentary where the residents were literally ducking and taking cover just to go get groceries.

I think the point is that more and more we are seeing rhetoric and legislation coming from the Right wing that actually encourages people to pick up a gun if someone plays loud music, or drops a candy wrapper on their lawn, or buys a pack of Skittles, or is a member of congress they don't agree with, or is a doctor who performs procedures they don't approve of, or any other ridiculous reason they can come up with to kill someone without any remorse or any conscience. The constant advocacy of "shoot first and ask questions later" is resulting in innocent people of all colors being killed for absolutely no reason, and if it does not stop we will become a society where people are afraid to walk down a street, and where even MORE people go out and arm themselves because they believe that everyone else is armed.

I do hope you will at least agree that it is not appropriate to kill someone because you "believe he committed a burglary" when he is posing no threat to you of any kind.
