ANOTHER Right Wing Slander Debunked: Presidential Vacation Costs

ProudProgressive 2011/12/23 19:43:20

As our economy continues to improve, as President Obama's public support continues to go up, as the President ably smacked down the latest attempt of the Teabaggers to hold the American economy hostage, the lies and slanders about President Obama coming out of the Right Wing media have surged. Understandable, of course, given the growing certainty of President Obama's re-election, but I have to say, it's getting to be quite enjoyable to repeatedly burst the bubbles of the Make America Fail crowd and then watch them scurry to come up with new lies to back up their old ones. The latest example of Right wing pathetic desperation are their attacks on the President's well earned vacation. Lost in the shuffle is the fact that not only was President Obama's predecessor the most incompetent and corrupt man ever to serve as President, but also the laziest.

Merry Christmas, Make America Fail Crowd. We'll keep the country safe in spite of you.

Article excerpt follows:

Bush Spent 5 Times More On Flights To Texas Than Obama‘s Christmas Vacation Costs
by Jason Easley

Those who criticize the cost of Obama’s Christmas vacation don’t want you to know that George W. Bush spent at least $20 million taxpayer dollars just on flights to his ranch in Crawford.

The right wing has been outraged at the four million dollar plus price tag for Obama’s family Christmas vacation, and they constantly hold George W. Bush up as an example of how thrifty a president should be when going on vacation.

The problem is that W. wasn’t thrifty. He was the most expensive vacation president in US history. Not only did Bush spend more days on vacation than any other president, but he used Air Force One more often while on vacation than any other president.

During Bush’s two terms, the cost of operating Air Force One ranged from $56,800 to $68,000 an hour. Bush used Air Force One 77 times to go to his ranch in Crawford, TX. Using the low end cost of $56,800, Media Matters calculated that each trip to Crawford cost taxpayers $259,687 each time, and $20 million total for Bush’s ranch flights.

If cost of the flight was the only expense involved to taxpayers Bush’s vacations would still seem rather economical, but there is more, much more. Unlike the Obama’s $4 million Christmas vacation price tag, which includes the cost of everything from transportation to accommodations for the First Family, the White House staff, and the White House press corps, Bush’s numbers only include the cost of flying the president to Crawford. The cost of transporting and accommodating staff, media, friends and family is not included in Bush’s vacation numbers.

In response to growing criticism that the president was on vacation too much, the Bush administration adopted the Rovian tactic of scheduling, “work events,” while the president was in Crawford so that they could claim that President Bush’s vacations were working vacations. During his infamous pre-9/11 August vacation, the AP reported that, “Using the ranch as a base, he will promote White House initiatives in Rocky Mountain National Park, Denver, Albuquerque, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and San Antonio.”

Bush’s “working vacations” cost taxpayers a small fortune in travel costs because President Bush and his staff would make day trips on Air Force One all across the country in order to counter the criticism that he was on vacation too often. For eight years, Bush essentially used Air Force One as his personal vacation taxi service.

What was also not counted in Bush’s Air Force One mileage total were the vacations where Bush flew to Crawford from Camp David such as the following via Media Matters:

In a December 27, 2001, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel article (accessed via Nexis), national correspondent Jeff Zeleny reported “[a]fter spending Christmas at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, the president and first lady boarded Air Force One to travel to their ranch near the village of Crawford.”

And on December 26, 2007, The Associated Press reported that Bush took “Air Force One to fly from his Maryland mountaintop retreat to his Texas ranch here to see in the new year.”

FactCheck.org was writing about the anonymous chain emails about Obama’s travel costs and noted in July that the stories about Obama’s travel expenses are, “part of continuing pattern of false and misleading claims about the travels of the president and the first lady,” and that Obama used Air Force One less in his first two years in office than George W. Bush did.

That same pattern of false information about Obama’s travel costs relative to Bush’s is also rampant on right wing blogs, websites, and Fox News. The cost of Obama’s Christmas vacation is a good example of how right wing media can take a small fact like vacation costs or the number of Americans paying taxes in a single year and build an entire misinformation campaign around it.

The total cost of Obama’s Christmas vacation may be $4 million, but George W. Bush spent exponentially more taxpayers dollars, because he used Air Force One for political purposes in an attempt to distract the public from the amount of days that he was spending on vacation. In flights alone just for himself, George W. Bush spent five times more money flying just himself to Texas than Obama is spending on an entire Christmas vacation.

It is likely that the Bush administration spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on vacations, but the false outrage machine is on overdrive due to one Obama Christmas vacation.

By not including the cost of everything, the Obama bashers distorted the numbers to make it appear that Obama was lavishly spending taxpayer dollars on vacations, but a look inside the numbers reveals that nobody knows how to waste taxpayer dollars quite like the GOP.

Merry Christmas, Republicans. Here’s to another false Obama smear debunked.

Very interesting article. So in 6.5 years of travel to his ranch, Bush spent 5x more than Obama did for 1 vacation. Yep the facts are correct. Just need to work on the math, 77 trips to Texas vs. 1 trip to Hawaii, lmao.

Let's see -- W. took trips to his Texas HOME/RANCH throughout his tenure as President.....and worked from home while he was there, didn't rack up hotel bills, and provided (from what I read a while back) housing for Secret Service and other support staff. There were barbecues at home...etc. Not quite $20+ million spent at Hawaiian top-rated hotels. Maybe we should sequester all non-critical flights on Air Force One, as well as accommodations in 5 star hotels.... Let's see the Obamas handle life on Bush's ranch for a week - without whining or room service. P.O.S.

They're not staying at top-rated hotels - they're staying at a beach house that the Obama family pays for themselves. Not tax-payer funded.

I read about 1/4th of your article, but I immediately saw that you were defending a position, instead of reporting on a subject. I signed up on this site about 2 weeks ago, that is why I clicked this search result from google. I just wanted to find out how many vacations, and days of vacations the Pres, and his family have taken. Before that search, I searched how much golf he has played. It is a fascinating number. I know someone commented already on what I am going to say, but that is OK because it is true, as soon as I read "as our economy continues to improve", I knew that the only thing I was going to get from your article was blatant propaganda. You also said, "It is likely that the Bush administration spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on vacations". I would imagine that there was no way on Gods green earth that you wrote that line with a straight face. No way. You might as well have said that he spent 2 billion doing it, and killed baby seals, after all, you are just imagining, right? Now I see that you hardly wrote any of this, you copied and pastes somebody else's crappy article. You only wrote the extremely horrible intro. I can't believe I wasted all of this time on a plagiarising propagandist who could care less about the actual truth.

Especially considering patriciateel's statement makes no specification of time frame, it'd be helpful to know what figure exactly she's quoting. Digging through the entire internet in search of her figure shouldn't be the duty of those questioning its legitimacy.

Please sir we are not blind and dumb masses no matter what you may think, was it not the president that chastised CEOs for using corporate airplanes to come to Washington? I could spend 30 minutes online and refute half of your assertions. I have wasted enough time just posting this.

Major difference - You compare 1 Obama trip for $4M to trips Bush took during his entire presidency. Please compare apples to apples. Both over spent to be sure, but because one overspent doesn't justify the other overspending. Let's get back to the days when the President of the United States spent within his means and did not steal taxpayers hard earned money.

What a joke ... talk about Mickey Mouse accounting. First of all, I've seen no evidence to show that Bush used any taxpayer money to fix up his Crawford Ranch. Secondly, it's interesting that the above post references only the first two years of Obama's Administration .... when he was staying kind of close to D.C. to ram through his bogus healthcare plan. Check out year 3 ... he was flying cross Country tri-weekly to make campaign indoctrination speeches to high schoolers. Moreover, on more than 3/4 of Bush's trips to Crawford, he entertained World Leaders from other Countries. The above article is the kind of false propaganda that the liberals cite as fact. No wonder there are so many kool-aid drinkers in this Country.

Thanks for the honest article. The so-called $4 trillion spent by Obama was due to our involvement with Iraq started by Bush . Remember it was Bush who attacked Iraq and along with Congress decided that the war would be paid later (after he was no longer in office). The $4 trillion amount of unapaid expense occurred during Bush's watch and was his decision. To attempt to attribute the debt to Obama is bunk! It is the Right that put us in the mess and as usual as "spin doctors" Right-wingers make excuses, blame others, whine, cover-up, and will never take responsibility for the messes they create. Blaming Clinton NEVER got old for the Bush administration.

More selective amnesia from the right.

The sound bite that Bush "inherited a recession from Clinton" was introduced before George W, Bush even took the oath of office. On December 3, 2000, Dick Cheney told Tim Russert "I think so" when asked if "we're on the front edge of a recession." Within days, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ("the Bush-Cheney administration should be planning on having inherited a recession as the farewell gift from Clinton") and House Majority Leader Dick Armey ("this new president may inherit a recession") followed suit. By August 2002, Mitch Daniels, Bush's head of the Office of Management and Budget, announced on Fox News:

"He [Bush] inherited that recession from the previous administration. Case is closed."

While Fox News' Sean Hannity made the argument during the November 2002 mid-term election "this president -- you know and I know and everybody knows -- inherited a recession," CNN made the case for him two months earlier. On September 18th, 2002, CNN's John King announced, "That's why the president, in almost every speech, tries to remind voters he inherited a recession." Bush was still blaming Clinton for his own economic malfeasance as late as 2004.

Indeed, as we pointed out previously, Bush loooved to blame Bill Clinton for just about everything:

In 2002, Bush blamed Clinton for the recession.

Also in 2002, Bush blamed for the mess in the Middle East.

In 2004, Bush blamed Clinton for manufacturing job losses.

Also in 2004, Bush blamed Clinton for a shortage of flu vaccine.

In 2005, Bush blamed Clinton for "running from terrorists" and generally causing 9/11.

In 2006, Bush blamed Clinton for Bush's own failures in containing North Korea.

In 2008, Bush blamed Clinton for the soaring deficit.

President Obama has added a TOTAL of about 1.4 trillion to the national debt since he took office.

That's less than the Bush tax giveaways to millionaires ALONE added to the debt.

That's less than the Bush war of lies in Iraq ALONE added to the debt.
