Chuck—we
only yesterday got an answer on the trailer bill number: SB 1018 As
you know, the Democrats played a very clever game of “hide the ball” on
this and a host of other issues that were snuck into the budget, not
allowing us to see much of the actual language until the very last
minute.
I presume you saw this article in the Sacramento Bee today?

People who dredge up Mercury that poisons the community's water supply, as happened in Sacramento.

DREDGERS REMOVE BOTH MERCURY AND LEAD FROM THE RIVERS..

YOUR SOURCE FOR WHAT YOU CLAIM TO BE TRUE PLEASE..

HOW ABOUT SOME COMMON SENSE ??OUR GOVERNMENT NEEDS IT..
WHERE IS THE SCIENTIFIC DATA TO SUPPORT A BAN ON DREDGING ??

DURING SPRING RUN OFF MOTHER NATURE MOVES MORE OF THE RIVER BOTTOM IN 1 HOUR THAN ALL THE MINERS PUT TOGETHER ..BOULDERS BIGGER THAN REFRIGERATORS TUMBLE DOWN THE RIVER.

FOR GOLD 53 000 CLAIMS IN CALIFORNIA..THE BAN SB 670 PASSED IN 09 CAUSES CALIFORNIA TO LOSE 50 MILLION DOLLARS IN TOURIST DOLLARS..

A California Water Board Study on Suction Dredging (2005) found that the normal suction gold dredge is 98% efficient at recovering mercury from the water. WE TAKE BOTH LEAD AND MERCURY OUT OF THE RIVERS..

A California Water Resources Board Study (2010) on fish in historical mining areas found no linkage between mining and mercury levels in fish and in fact issued no advisories on fish in historic mining areas.

A survey of mercury recovery by the California Department of Fish and Game resulted in estimates of over 2.5 tons of mercury having been recovered by suction dredgers. THAT S A LOT.. COAL FIRED POWERED POWER PLANTS PUT TONS OF MERCURY IN THE AIR EACH DAY..THIS EVENTUALLY GETS INTO THE WATER SUPPLY..

Claims by radical special interest groups that dredging harms wildlife or cultural resources are untrue and distort the facts.

A study by the US Park Service found a 10,000% increase in the endangered Mountain Yellow Legged Frog when stocked fish were removed from their habitat.

The 1994 California Department of Fish and Game Environmental Impact Report found that suction dredges actually improved salmon spawning habitat on rivers that had been dammed. (11) The California Department of Fish and Game acknowledged in the Final SEIR that the “probability of [dredgers] disturbing special status passerines is low…”

The 2012 Final Subsequent EIR on suction dredging does not document a single case of suction dredging actually harming wildlife. WHICH COST THE TAX PAYER 2 MILLION DOLLARS..

Mercury has been recognized as a serious environmental contaminant for many years. As a result, industrial uses have declined significantly over recent decades as effective substitutes have been developed. The US EPA estimates that in the United States the single largest remaining source of mercury discharges into the environment is ((( coal )))combustion.

Mercury concentrations in coal are generally less than one part per million (ppm), but, in the United States alone in 1995, the large tonnage of coal combustion introduced an estimated 50 tons of mercury into the atmosphere. Mercury released to the environment from oil refined in the United States is approximately 5% of that which may be derived from coal combustion. The total amount of mercury emitted to the atmosphere from coal and oil combustion in North America was about 70 million tons in 2005. A comparable estimate for global mercury emissions from coal and oil combustion is 890 tons, of which 295 tons were emitted in China (Pirrone and others, 2010). THIS DOES AFFECT THE GROUND WATER..

Thanks for posting Chuck and for the link.
The environment is important. Jobs & the economy are important.
Okay, that said, I do not think it is the right time to impose job-killing regulations on Americans trying to feed their families.
California should be dealing with its fiscal problems first, before venturing into the role of Capt Planet and the planeteers.

They should put it up for a vote and let the people of the state decide.
Sometimes this environmental stuff goes too far.
