Ann Romney slammed for $990 Shirt, Michelle Obama praised for $6,800 jacket

Back in May, Ann Romney, wife of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, wore a $990 Reed Krakoff silk shirt for a media appearance. The item of clothing set off a media firestorm, with the Romneys widely accused of being “out of touch” with average Americans.

In particular, the Washington Post wrote that the $990 blouse “will not help her husband change those perceptions, no matter how many Laundromat photo ops are on the campaign’s itinerary.”

Fast forward to last Friday, when First Lady Michelle Obama attended an Olympics reception for heads of state at Buckingham Palace, donning a J. Mendel cap sleeve jacket from the 2013 Resort collection.

The price-tag? $6,800.

This time, the Washington Post simply described the intricacies of the jacket and noted that Mrs. Obama has previously been criticized for “not dressing up enough for Queen Elizabeth II, so she stepped up her game.” No snide remarks, no outrage over the cost, no suggestion she was “out of touch.”

“The media’s overabundant love affair with the Obamas has become increasingly blatant as this election draws nearer. Scrutinizing Mrs. Romney for a fashion choice that cost considerably less than that of the First Lady is yet another example of the media being purely sanctimonious,” former political publicist Angie Meyer told FoxNews.com. “The media continues to relish their roles as liberal bullies, and have relentlessly bullied the Romneys from the beginning. It is pure hypocrisy at its finest.”

Glenn Selig of The Publicity Agency concurred.

“The media will not stay quiet on the issue because wealth remains a big issue with the Romneys. It is not his fault that he's wealthy, but the media is portraying it as a liability,” Selig said.

Dan Gainor, VP of Business and Culture for Media Research Center in Washington DC, said it’s “just the latest example of a consistent media theme that somehow Romney is too wealthy and out of touch because he's a millionaire. Except of course that Obama is also a millionaire. “

Some also highlighted the apparent hypocrisy on Twitter. “And you thought the Romneys were out of touch?” tweeted one, while another wondered who had to pay for the almost $7,000 dress, and another balked that the “jacket would put a lot of food on the table of one of the 25M unemployed people in USA.”

Not everyone’s nose was out of joint, however. Media commentator Jenn Hoffman told FoxNews.com that “Americans need to face the fact that with our current system, politicians need to have money. That is how they get into the office in the first place. If you are near the White House, you have access to serious cash and much of that cash is spent on honing your image.”

Mark Joseph, producer of “Wild Card: The Promise & Peril of Sarah Palin,” added that “Mrs. Romney's wardrobe expenses are certainly fair game, but so are Mrs. Obama's, and political reporters have got to do a better job of being even-handed."

Ann Romney has impeccable taste. Mooshell, tacky and tasteless. How can those writers print that dreck praising stuff that's badly designed upholstery and drapery fabrics. And those belts up under her boobs, good grief.

They did this same thing during the last election focusing on unimportant aspects and disregarding others, yet Liberal voters will be able to tell you how much Ann's wardrobe cost at least she paid for it, Romney has donated, more time, money and energy into the country and community than Obama ever has or will. Obama has used loopholes and dirty tactics to get in to politics and is praised for those aspects while Romney worked and gave back to the community without taking a salary for his public service is condemned.

There is a difference in between wearing a shirt for a media appearance in the US, and an another for a political function with the heads of state of an another country (or 200)...

Different scenario, different standards. Now if she first appeared in that jacket for a media event, there would definitely be some criticism there.

I still maintain that it is a different scenario then appearing in a media event with the US as the audience then from appearing to the world leaders.

I have done contract work representing people from different companies. I have a suit and tie in my closet ONLY for that aspect of my job. otherwise, I would be perfectly happy in jeans and a t-shirt.

But I will not wear those jeans when meeting people of other companies because then that gives my employers a bad reputation.

I suspect this is much the same here. But again... as I said in an another post here in this question, people don't care. They only read what will validate their viewpoint and ignore the overall context if it's an inconvenient truth.

Those that act that way... are more then welcome to keep their tunnel vision.

Michelle's worn $540 sneakers to a food bank and was written about for a $2,000 sundress but there are some TV stations that are very obvious as stay away from any negative stories about the Obama's.

Price is all relative to what you make. Last year Romney made 25 million, Obama made $400,000. Based on that the only obscene spending is Michelle's.

Simple: Romney is a candidate, therefore his responsibility is to make himself relatable to the average American citizen. His wife definitely did not help.

Obama is our President, and his wife the First Lady. They were representing the nation to the world, in the middle of world leaders who are wearing intricate, expensive clothing. Imagine how Mrs. Obama would look in a $40 dress.

There is no bias, people. At least not here, not when it's put in context.

WHAT??? That is one of the craziest liberal left wing explanations I've ever heard. The facts are Person A gets criticised for a $990 outfit yet Person B wearing a $6800 outfit and you haven't got the courage and decency to admit to yourself that that type of comparison just isnt right, YOU come up with some twisted form of lunatic logic to excuse it accept it and praise it ??? No wonder people cant explain reality and facts to you. You live in a dream world of your own liberal altered reality. Sad and embarassing as it is.

Would you want to represent the USA to a foreign power in cutoffs and a t-shirt? What kind of image does that project?

Context please. Different situation, different standards. There were over 200 countries represented at the Olympics.

I would not be surprised if that jacket was put into a secured closet in the Whitehouse for the next event where there are heads of state involved.

But of course, people don't care. They only want to read what they want to read.
