And so I totally agree. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. This is what happens ever time our government oversteps it spending and had to cut back. They gut the military first. Next they will be gutting out 2nd amendment rights.

Some defense cuts are justified, but while defense is the primary constitutional power of the federal government, it is now only 19.3% of government spending. That is not an historically high percentage of the federal budget, unless your window of history is made very small indeed. What is clearly the primary cause of our broken government spending record is non-defense spending, primarily entitlement spending. The costs of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are going up and up and it is absurd to ignore them as the primary problem. ObamaCare makes the problem of spending still worse.

The Lockheed Martin F-22 program cost over $66 billion, and one F-22 costs $150 million each, with a total ordered of 183. After 2 wars, it still has been used ..twice. Double dose of hypocrisy from anyone claiming to be a pro-defense yet financially conservative. Need worry about our own damn shores. That thing is the ace of spades, and we have even more, nobody's seriously gonna mess with us.. Osama's dead; It's over. Wean off foreign oil so no need to protect supply routes. Returning soldiers get first pick on new infrastructure jobs and domestic sustainable energy projects, rebuilding our manufacturing base and some eventually working there, or somewhere else, seeing as INsourcing would be the new thing, and it all would work on improving our economy.

If we just stop trying to be the worlds police force, and stop trying to bully everyone else, we could cut spending and still have a proper defense for our country,
Of course that would also mean electing people who would honor the Constitution, obey the law's and bring America back to what our founders wanted us to be...at peace with the rest of the world, fair trade with those who would trade fairly with us, and freedom to live and make out of life what we could....Morals, ethic's, & honor are missing in our once great country from the top down...When will we return and can we return ???

Who gives a damn what other countries spend on their defense. You can't have a good defense if you don't keep it that way. The point is, that every time our government gets us in a financial bind. Instead of cutting the spending, and fixing the problems, they start gutting our military. At a time that it is needed. Even though you liberal SOB's don't care.

One the USSR doesn't exist anymore, Two it's only 20% of the budget if you count Medicare and SS which were not huge chunks circa 1963. We spend more in real dollars today than we did then. count medicare ss huge chunks circa 1963 spend real dollars

We pay no attention to history because we doubt its veracity.

When our ancestors left us written records of life during their time, we either choose to call them The Bible or we actually change the events to reflect ourselves in a more positive image.

So I would guess that one day, if the records of our generation are found and deciphered I'm sure that the readers will be wondering if we made up stories (I'm referring to the Bible) and laughing at us for saying we went to the moon.

Is this not in your question? "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it."

We DO NOT pay any heed to history! Why should we? It isn't accurate. It isn't without bias.

"And I don't base it on those who would change the history to fit their views of it." And how would you know that? It's all subjective. And I wasn't suggesting that there was any connection between the bible and defense.

So calm down and take a pill. You'll feel better.

To those who have latched on to the dollars spent on defense vs that of other nations....why not also consider force strength? how many more troops and materials do these other nations have to our own combined or is the army of china enough to show this difference for ya?

I was not trying to imply we have to meet or exceed. I was just trying to point out how spin can be used to get people to think the way desired vs truth. In most conflicts our force strength was weak but in time was built up & that allowed success along with the desire to win. As far as radical Islamist abroad I think we need to cut that cancer out, we also need to get those within our borders

We currently have 11 Aircraft carriers in service, 1 in reserve and 3 under construction. the PRC currently has one being built. Not only do we have more carriers in service than the rest of the combined, our smallest carrier will be 1.6 times the size of the one being rebuilt by the Chinese navy. The Chinese carrier is not expected to be finished until 2015 at least. How exactly is China's half built carrier a threat?
  • Wolfman Cyan9 2012/01/08 07:25:55
    Wolfman
Actually, the ChiComs have two carriers in-work; one is in sea trials. The ChiComs have an Army roughly 1.7x the size of ours. They are expanding their armed forces; air force, army, and navy. The reason that a carrier is important is that this is a new carrier. We have three in construction because our fleet is constantly retiring ships due to age. China's navy is playing an important role in the country's drive to become a world military power, with the recent trials of its first aircraft carrier underlining the scale of Beijing's naval ambitions.

China has become increasingly assertive on the high seas and the carrier's first outing last month sparked jitters in the United States and Japan, which said the move would have a "big impact" on the region.

We already have gone from a fleet of nearly 700 ships, to less than 300. Our entire military is reduced over the past 6 years. Most pf our fleet is comprised of Reagan Era ships, in need of maintenance and repair more often.

While the Threat to our homeland is increasing. Iran sending Subs to patrol off the east coast, Iran built missile bases in Venezuela armed with missiles that are capable of reaching the USA easily. Iran buyong Russina Cargo Container Missile systems that are undetectable till they launch. China as well on the west coast. Both developing EMP devices that could shut the country down in minutes with virtually no deaths or property destruction.

Well we are losing our offensive advantage to the bad guys, and those in this thread are supporting it.

Even to the point that they think our defense budget is the entire economic problem. It is the least of our economic problem, and pretty much the only one supported by the constitution.

Nowhere in the Constitution does it say the government should spend a trillion dollars a year on Social programs. Which is what that graph proves.
And then there is the debt clock:

Add together the items in the upper left versus the Defense spending.
