I think it is and I think anyone who gives up their passwords to employers is nuts. I would never ask my office help or anyone of my employees for that.

What you do in your personal life is none of your employers business. I'm expected to keep my personal life out of my job(BY THE PEOPLE WHO HIRED ME) then I very damn well do not want my job being brought into my personal life.

It gives your employer a small glimpse into your personal internet life. I understand that people don't like it but Facebook is not a privacy site.

For almost nothing your employer can do a comprehensive background check you. Compared to that Facebook is almost nothing.

I never put anything worth while on my FB. I goof around with friends, share funny pics, etc. and that's about the size of it. However, though I wouldn't mind personally giving them a tour of my FB, I will NOT fork over my sign in information so they can go on a digging expedition whenever the mood strikes.
Besides, it's against FB Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.
    Subheading 3 Safety (#5)

We do our best to keep Facebook safe, but we cannot guarantee it. We need your help to do that, which includes the following commitments:

1 You will not send or otherwise post unauthorized commercial communications (such as spam) on Facebook.
2 You will not collect users' content or information, or otherwise access Facebook, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders, or scrapers) without our permission.
3 You will not engage in unlawful multi-level marketing, such as a pyramid scheme, on Facebook.
4 You will not upload viruses or other malicious code.
5 You will not solicit login information or access an account belonging to someone else.

that's exactly why I don't put anything on my face book, in fact I don't even have a face book. My face is much better in person in real time than it would ever be on some old book.

Plus as difficult as it may seem to many of you I have a life. I know I know it's not much of a life but its a life and DOESN'T include time for face book or polls on political candidates

I would not give them my password, or friend them. However, I am ALWAYS aware that the internet is FOREVER. I am very careful what I say about my job (NOTHING EVER) because most of what I do involves confidential information, if you read 4 years of my blog you'll find no mention of a job at all.
Asking me to reveal a password, I would consider to be a TEST of my ability to keep a secret.. and I would not reveal it.

IF they're looking to see who are or what you have to say about yourself (no passwords or friend access, just public info), then it's a natural consequence of divulging personal details for all to see and interact with. Choose your words, memes and themes carefully, and you'll have nothing to worry about. Get wild and crazy, and there may be a price to pay.

    Please elaborate.

The First Amendment only restricts Congress, not the People, how can your employer asking you for your permission to see information violate the First Amendment?
  • TheTrut... Rusty S... 2012/05/04 06:33:13
    TheTruth1313
Because they can refuse to hire you or even find grounds to fire you if you do not comply.
Even Rusty's alter-ego Dale would disapprove of this.
  • Rusty S... TheTrut... 2012/05/04 09:26:58

Are you saying that as an employer, I shouldn't have a right to not hire you?
  • TheTrut... Rusty S... 2012/05/05 06:28:26
    TheTruth1313
Not if it hinges on whether or not you got to look at my FB page. You still would not have the right to invade my privacy.
But, I would hope you would hire me....you seem like you would be a cool boss. LOL
  • Rusty S... TheTrut... 2012/05/05 10:26:55
    Rusty Shackleford
Shouldn't I have the right to hire, or not hire, anyone that I wish, for any reason that I wish? Don't you have the right to decide who you choose to do business with? Do I?
  • TheTrut... Rusty S... 2012/05/06 07:08:37

So, as a employer, I don't have the same rights as an employee?

Is that really fair in a country where all men are created equal?
  • TheTrut... Rusty S... 2012/05/07 07:02:29
    TheTruth1313
Kind of taking a bit of a leap into that one. Aren't ya? I'm simply saying that everyone has a right to privacy and a right to be treated equally when being considered for a job.
  • Rusty S... TheTrut... 2012/05/07 10:31:30
    Rusty Shackleford
As an employee, do you have the right to refuse to work for someone based upon their race or sexual orientation?
  • TheTrut... Rusty S... 2012/05/08 07:24:18
    TheTruth1313
Is this economy, wouldn't that be cutting your nose off to spite your face? Employers are, understandably, held to different standards.

  • TheTrut... Rusty S... 2012/05/09 06:35:38
    TheTruth1313
As I said, you are held to a higher standard. I have to say though that if you actually would refuse to hire the most qualified people for the job simply due to minor issues such as race, sexual orientation, etc that your business will probably fail or, at the very least, fail to reach it's true potential.
  • Rusty S... TheTrut... 2012/05/09 10:30:45

If an employer or potential employer wanted to know about my FaceBook page, I would tell them the truth; I don't have one because I refuse to engage in the invasion of my own personal privacy. I'd tell them that I could start one for them if they wanted me to, but I wouldn't have any pictures or information of a personal nature on it, which would seem kind of pointless.

Way too far. They do drug testing; I think that's all they need to know about your personal life. They're just nosey suit bastards who are probably little men who've been given a little power - could be nosey little suit women, too. lol Don't want to be sexist here, but the point is, they have no right to pry that deeply into your personal life. If you are qualified for the job, what does it matter what you chat about, or who your friends are. None of their freaking business.

But that's the result of recession in a time of no unions. With jobs scarce and no collective bargaining, they can do pretty much anything. In prosperous times, they'd soon be out of employees and loaded with lawsuits.

To be blunt it is a lot too far.

If i was asked, I would say "sure. And while your at it, here are the keys to my house. Take a look around and see if my family portraits meet your standards. Maybe you'll find that my cat is acceptable to you or that it is ok with you that I am still married, have crosses in the house (as that indicates that I am a Christian..,if that is acceptable to you) and I have 2 kids. But please don't mind the kids rooms they are messy. I would hate for you to not hire me because something like that was unacceptable to you."

Then I would respectfully decline their offer, get up and leave.
