America's First Assisted Suicide

- A 66-year-old US woman with advanced cancer has become the first person to die under a new assisted suicide law in Washington State. The woman, Linda Fleming, died on Thursday night after taking drugs prescribed by her doctor. The "Death with Dignity" law was approved by 60% of Washington State voters in a referendum last year.... My grandmother, mother and sister all died of cancer.....not to mention the man I was in love with at one point in my life. I was holding all their hands except my grandmothers. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM DIED OF DRUG OVERDOSE via MORPHINE administered by a nurse to stop the suffering. So, they have been doing it for years and years. They just keep giving massive doses of morphine claiming it's for the pain. It's merciful.

Hitler would be proud that the government of Washington state would have such a law. This is a tragedy on human life. When will this madness stop? This will get worst under a universal healthcare. This is horriffic times we are living in.

It wasn't America's First Assisted Suicide. Jack Kevorkian, the retired pathologist dubbed “Dr. Death” after claiming he had participated in at least 130 assisted suicides, left prison after eight years ... . If someone is of right mind and has a Terminal illness, should they not have the right to choose thier fate?

It should be very significantly regulated, but allowed under controlled conditions. In fact, whats the difference with death by morphine in nursing homes today? Opps. a bit to much there on Mrs. Baughman (who has been in severe pain for weeks).

Well, it's about time terminally ill people have the choice whether or not to end their horrible suffering. Death with Dignity is the perfect name for this wonderful law. terminally ill people choice horrible suffering death dignity law

My brother-in-law died of lung cancer. He was at home and was given morphine. We were by his side for 2 days as his breathing became shallow and eractic. I wouldn't call it an assisted suicide because he could hardly breath before the morphine was started and his body was already shutting down. He lived till he couldn't breath anymore and his heart stopped.

if it ends someones agony of pain, im for it.
keeping suffering people alive months longer so money can be made of their condition is immoral.

If I were in the same medical situation as this woman, I would have selected this way - to check out. I am sure in hospitals, dying patients are given painkillers in higher doses as well, by the medical staff?

I wouldn't judge anyone who opted for dignity in death. I believe in "judge not lest ye be judged". But, I work in the healthcare industry and I know that pain management is very effective. I have seen people with pancreatic cancer, and other types of cancer, in the end stages that have their pain managed where they are still able to think clearly and rationally and also have cherished time with their family. My hope would be that people explore all of the options before making the choice of ending their life and that they have a physician that will make all of their choices clear to them.

wow. i don't know that i would take that route, but i support the law, i mean, if that's the way people want to go, then what right does anyone have to stop them?

Suicide is wrong. Along with abortions it should not be allowed to take place in this country.

we have so many new and aggressive diseases from a genetic pool of over 300 chemicals from the industrial and tech ages. Authors of the bible were just men/women (all of us falling short of the glory of God), who lived in simpler times, not knowing where we would be today, the abuses, manipulation, illnesses.

These matter are between the child of the creator and the creator - not for us to judge. It REALLY IS that simple.

I have not judged anyone. Sin is sin! Murdeer is murder! God has said so in his word. JESUS is the Judge.

    i speak in generalities (mostly)
yes - murder is the same degree of sin that gossip, intolerance, etc. is.
and yes Jesus/God is the judge.

    (our) Speech has powerful
    words do not fade
    what starts as a sound
    end in a deed.

True, all sin is sin. They are all equal except one and that is Blasphemy of God. It will never be forgiven. It's in the bible. I have still not judged. I never said I was perfect and I have never seen anyone walk on water either . So if you think you are perfect give it a shot.
