Of course prosperity can be had with higher taxes, but nobody wants to pay higher taxes. Not the rich, not the middle class, not the poor. Almost everyone wants others to pay more taxes than they currently do, but balk at any notion of a tax increase for themselves.
Look at the recent example with Obama not letting the Bush tax cuts expire. Because those in the middle class wanted to hang on to their breaks, to appease them Obama had to let the wealthy keep theirs too.
Edit:.... It should be pointed out that America also prospered under Ike's rather extreme taxation levels. The premise that higher taxes will end prosperity is utter nonsense, promoted by those who stand to pay the most in taxes.... those who have the most to lose should the American Republic collapse.
America prospered under the tax rates in effect during the Clinton administration. The economy grew, jobs were created, and we had a budget surplus. Why do Republicans believe we can't prosper if we return to those same rates now?
