Amanda Knox Cleared of Meredith Kercher Murder: Innocent or Guilty?

After four years of ongoing investigations and proceedings concerning the murder of Meredith Kercher, an Italian appeal court has overturned all convictions against Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend on the grounds that evidence against then was "not reliable." They're to be released as soon as possible.

Since Knox and former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were charged with sexually assaulting and stabbing Kercher in 2007, there have been eight documentaries made about the case. Lifetime has even produced a feature-length made-for-TV movie about Knox starring "Heroes" actress Hayden Panettiere, which aired in February of this year.

Now the majority of those films will seem incomplete, though the public won't be so quick to let her off the hook. Knox received booing and jeering when she left the courtroom on Monday. MSN reports cries of "Shame! Shame!" came from all around as Knox held a black cloak to her chest and covered her face. In light of unflattering portrayals by the media, like Casey Anthony before her, Knox's freedom will be bittersweet.

Knox reportedly burst into tears when the ruling was announced. Prior to the ruling she said, "I'm not a promiscuous vamp. I'm not violent ... I have not killed, I have not raped, I was not there, I was not present. I want to go home, I want to go back to my life, I do not want to be punished and to have my life taken away from me for something I have not done, because I am innocent."

Knox would have served 26 years in prison. The court did uphold a three year sentence for slander, but the four years she already served counted toward that sentence. For all intents and purposes, Amanda Knox is now a free woman.

Finally justice has been done in the saga of this poor woman. There never was any reliable evidence against her, and the investigation and prosecution were revealed for the slipshod ways they proceeded. Everyone involved in the prosecution of this case should be brought before charges, disbarred and jailed.

It is time to leave Amanda alone and let her live her life. If she makes money from books or movies, she has earned it.

All too many are eager to pronounce someone guilty before they are found innocent. Based on insufficient evidence and flawed DNA testing she is now exonerated but still has to live the rest of her life with the stigma of guilt, and that is a crying shame.

This trial has been always covering up something... just the way it was played seemed odd from my point of view. I think she is still guilty even if she is innocent, I still believe she is hiding the truth!

Interesting way of putting it. But I'm pretty sure she's innocent of what they specifically charged her with.

Maybe so. But I think she's guilty of what she was convicted of, innocent of what the was acquitted of, and what remains unaccounted for will probably be obscured by the shroud of time regardless of whether the truth ever comes out. It's all dust in the wind anyway. If you're right, then justice was partially served. As it is, skeletons in the closet in a situation do not always pertain to the legal case. A private secret may simply be a private shame.

I see you have not followed the case. Amanda Knox admitted to being in the apartment the night of the murder, she stated she covered her ears not to hear the screams of the brutal muder of a innocent young girl. She was doing cartwheels in the police station I see how broken up she was. Her and her boyfriend were seen running from the apartment. Her bloody footprint was on the bathroom rug. Her DNA on the bra clasp and the knife handle, it is also odd that the apartment was wiped clean, Amanda Knox 's fingerprints were only on a glass, well she lived there, they should have been all over the place. Something is wrong. Just because the defense says the defense that the DNA on the bra MAYBE, contaminated, that doesn't mean it was, her murder conviction was overturned by a technicality. that does not mean she didn't have anything to do with the brutal murder. She is no babe in the woods. The night of the murder she admitted to drug and alcohol use.
Something is definelty wrong here. I say she got away with murder.

I know that the jury overturned her conviction due the of lack of a motive and errors made by forensic investigators. I also know that she said that she was coerced into making a confession when she was first questioned, that she was hit upon the head until she gave them the answers that they wanted, and that the interrogation was done without a lawyer being present. Another odd thing about the interview was that it wasn't video taped or recorded.

I agree Without motive this case would have gone nowhere in a U.S. court, there was just insufficient forensic evidence linking her to this. Its true that some people do kill just for the pleasure of it but there was no indication of prior aberrant behavior by Knox, so I must agree with your assessment.

There was no DNA evidence to convict Amanda Knox. I do, however, suspect Amanda's boyfriend is probably guilty of Meredith Kercher's rape and murder.

What evidence? Was it the DNA? Oh wait- that all pointed to someone else. Was it the bloody fingerprints? Oh, no no- that all belonged to the same someone else. Maybe it was the genetic material on the knife- oh right, that was determined to be rye bread. What overwhelming evidence?

Oh right- she smoked pot and liked to have sex. Everyone knows that's a combination for murder.

From what we can know from press accounts, it appears that the investigation was not exactly unbiased. We can never really know unless we were ther to evaluate all the evidence. Only the jury can do that and they did come to a conclusion.
