James Holmes, the alleged Colorado gunman who killed 12 people and injured nearly 60 others, has formally been charged in court. The 24-year-old former post-doctorate student was charged with 142 offenses, including 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder.

If convicted, Holmes could spend the rest of his life in jail -- or even get the death penalty, though prosecutor haven't yet revealed if they'll be seeking capital punishment on this case. Do you think the death penalty is appropriate for the alleged shooter?

ONLINE.WSJ.COM reports:
Colorado prosecutors charged former doctorate student James Holmes with 142 offenses, including 24 counts of first-degree murder, in the shooting at an Aurora movie theater.

All murderers deserve the death penalty except those who were insane at the time.

We need to come up with a better word than Alleged. The definition alleged (of an incident or a person) Said, without proof, to have taken place or to have a specified illegal or undesirable quality.

This is insulting to the Victims and the police that had to deal with this pathetic coward.

Also the Joker has always had Green hair.
Not Orange you color blind drop out.

Life in Jail laws change maybe in 25-30 years he could be released .
But death is a bit more permit way knowing he will not go into another Movie or other public place and spree kill again.

the death penalty solves nothing. there are 1000s of ppl, maybe more that want this evil man to suffer for what he did to those innocent ppl. Simply dying and going to Hell won't ease any pain. I'd rather see him in mass amounts of pain, then let the devil have his way with the killer...slowly

He should get 24 life sentences to go with the 24 first degree murder charges. According to The Catechism of the Catholic Church "Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person. Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity 'are very rare, if not practically nonexistent.'" I believe that maximum security prisons in the United States have the ability to protect the public without his death.

I support retribution by the government. If a man has no value on a life neither should the law value his. My uncle Johny G was killed by the Briley brothers when i was five. The last brother was executed when I was 12. I felt a sense of justice when it was all done.

What is the deal with "the alleged" gunman when it is a known fact that he done. I am so sick and tired of all of this "political correctedness". This society is filled with nothing but a bunch of whiny babies. Get your stinking thumbs out of your mouths, grow up, and take responsibility for your own actions.
I am for Capital Punishment. But the way today's society and judicial system, they would rather fill the prisons with individuals that should have been executed years and even decades ago. If a person takes it upon themselves to kill innocent bystanders, they should be executed. But I also believe that they should have a chance to repent of their evil actions and receive salvation if they should choose to do so.

A fair trial to determine guilt or innocence has absolutely nothing to do with political correctness. Due process is the law of the land. Due process prevents the government from simply executing those it deems undesirable. Until someone is proven guilty, they are considered innocent.

Think about it. If your son/daughter was killed in that theater, would you feel better if Mr. Holmes was in prison, where he could escape or go on another rampage on parole, or if he was dead and couldn't hurt anyone anymore?

The only question I have for you, is WHat if it happened to one of your family members. Maybe you will not be so quick to decide. I know that the DUMB BAS_____D knew what he was doing, and so did his family. I think that the famil;yh is just as guilty as he is. And as such, so be made to pay for all the funeral expenses, hospital bills, and what ever else. Also, Civil Action should be taken against the family. And the state of Colorado should seek to recover the cost of having to deploy all the police and other first responders to the seen. Can you say TERRORISM...This was a clear act of such, and the only pently is DEATH....

That's the easy way out. Sitting in prison for the rest of your life would be nearly unbearable.
