The teacher, Jean Flaherty, revised the lyrics in several places to remove the references to God. The local paper reports:
One example occurs in the second half of the first verse, as composed by Jackson and Richie, reads:
We can’t go on pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of God’s great big family
And the truth, you know,Love is all we need
Flaherty’s edited version changed the third line:
We are all a part of one great big family

If you are a christian and offended by this you need to get over yourself and realize the world does not revolve around your mythology any more than it does any one elses.
After all, the starving African people this was about, got NO help from God, like THEY were no part of "god's" big family
The true help came from Musicians Singers and Artists in general with the worldwide Live Aid Benefit concerts !
And I am damn proud I was one of them in the summer of '85
