Akin's Rape Remark Draws Tea Party Pressure: Will Akin's Comment Cost Romney Missouri's Electoral Votes?

Mainstream media has dog-piled on senatorial candidate Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) for his comment about "legitimate rape." Akin has apologized for his comment, but the media will not let it pass, which has caused many Republicans and Tea Party members to put pressure on Akin to drop out of the race.

Some polls suggest that Akin's comment may adversely affect Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Missouri. Voters may show up to vote against Akin and Republicans may not show up to vote for Akin. Both of these actions could increase the votes for Obama and give Missouri's electoral votes to Obama.

"I've really made a couple of serious mistakes here that were just wrong, and I need to apologize for those," Akin said. Do you think Akin's comments will give Missouri's electoral votes to Obama -- and hurt Romney in the process?

ABCNEWS.GO.COM reports:
Pressure mounted on Rep.Todd Akin to quit his Missouri Senate race today despite his repeated refusals to step down over his incendiary comments about rape.

Romney is ahead in Missouri by at least 7 points in many polls ... and I seriously doubt this one particular incident, as regrettable as it is, is going to significantly change that. Especially in an election that will be predominantly about jobs.

In today's 24-hour news cycles, a lot will happen between now and early November that will push this whole Akin thing off the radar.

The liberals' attempts to score political points from this will not succeed. Is what Akin said any more despicable than what Biden said about Republicans wanting to re-enslave black people?

I don't think so. It was an atrocious accusation, and it was much worse than what Akin said.

Akin was just being stupid, and he's apologized for what he said. Biden was being absolutely hateful, and he hasn't apologized at all. Let's remember that, everyone.

You seem to be doing alright in the hate department yourself. As for me a libby RRIIIIIIIGGGGGHHHTTTTT. Always knowing who the person is when they make a comment. As I mentioned I HAD respect for them but they insist that we shut down all programs that help those in need and tell them to suck it up and work.

Problem, Nearly all who apply and get it really are disabled or too old to work. Fact is the majority of them are legitimate ones needing it. Reform not shut down which is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard from the right.

And as below Wolf says I agree you seem to be the only one hating.

How dare the establishment Republicans try and hold Akin to a standard that they won't even hold the Democrat Party to. The Democrats have a rapist (Clinton) speaking at their national convention and they aren't criticizing them at all for it. Akin made a big blunder, but he 1) apologized for it and 2) does not make his stance on political positions bad.

Thats a lot more than you ever see from the Democrats. 1 speaking blunder is not a reason to end your political career.

Clinton was never charged for rape and in order for that to happen Monica had to report it in which she didn't they had consensual sex.

Nobody is even placing themselves in the same vicinity of Akins remarks. He's an individual human being, and he blew it. His own political career. End of story. If there are reasonable voters in MO, which I'm sure there are, they'll vote for Romney, just as many as would before. The Romney camp already distanced themselves. This is one of those slow news cycle things that's got everybody's imaginations atwitter. You may not find Akin getting elected, but if that rubs off on other politicians, who are all individual people, then shame on the voters. This is, by the way, the same thing the liberals told the conservatives re: Reverand Wright way back when. We heard over and over....."he doesn't speak for us". Time for everybody to have a nice chamomile tea, and take a breath.

Akin's remarks were stupid and make it difficult to see how the Republicans will gain a majority in the Senate but Romney is unlikely to lose Missouri unless he does something equally stupid....not that winning Missouri will make a big difference in the outcome of the election.

Not at all. Romney immediately distanced himself from Akin's comments, as has the rest of the GOP. Clearly, Akin hurt himself but he also hurt the GOP's chances to take the Senate and this is what really sets me off. Akin is a selfish fool.

No it won't, I live in Taxachusetts and had dinner tonight with friends who voted for Obama in 2008 because of his "hope and change", and apparently the Akin's "scandal" is a non-issue for them.. the state of our country's ECONOMY is the main issue for them, and they are voting for Romney instead of voting again for Obama because they.. quote. "like that Romney is a successful business guy" and don't care at all about his tax returns!! What those die hard social liberals DON'T GET, is that for the majority of hard working middle class Americans come election time to vote for POTUS.. it's all about(rightfully so) their own household budget and that their paychecks can no longer afford to pay for the higher cost of gas, groceries, utilities etc..under a "green", socially conscious Obama Administration that THINKS the American government(under Liberal control) has the answers to solve global warming, world hunger, and solve peace in the middle east by apologizing about America's greatness?? What the idealistic Left don't get, is that there will NEVER be "peace in the Middle East"..only a controlled "peace" while a Republican President (hawk) is in office..because the dictators FEAR what America might do and will do when a Republican is POTUS!! Liberals also thought/think that...

lol. Hmmmm, what was William Jefferson Clinton(42) doing during the Vietnam war when HE too could have served his country?? Look, you Liberals are getting desperate, thus trying to do/say anything to take the focus off of Obama's failure as our country's CIC. Only you lib's care about Romney's tax returns from 10 years ago and only you lib's want to talk about anything BUT the economy..and my Democrat friends from MA know that too. Are you that naive to not GET IT...Romney was elected Governor of my Liberal state BECAUSE he was a fiscal Conservative during a time when my state needed a Governor with a "business sense" to get my state back on track financially. We did not care that he was a "Mormon" or that he supposedly "flipped flopped" with his beliefs on social issues. We didn't care about his views on social issues, we wanted a smart business minded Governor to get our state financially solvent! You liberals are so naive tot hink that in a terrible economy that we have now.. that voters are more focused on social issues like abortion, gay rights etc.???

I have to say that I watched the whole thing...and it is not nearly as bad a statement as it is sound-bited...very contextual. It was certainly delivered poorly...no doubt. I will give Akins props for speaking his mind....and his opinion. One either agrees or doesn't ..but there is not falsehood. I can't stand Biden trying to demean people by adopting a false tone and a false sense of understanding...insulting people's intelligence with the re-enslaving of blacks by another party. He can't even bother to come up with 2% of his income for charity.....talk about fake.

I agree with most of your statement with this one exception. Pointing to the misconduct of others is not an excuse for other misconduct. Akin's remark just gives the Democrats the tools to shift the issue from the economy to any other issue they choose, and remember, the Democrats have the press on their side.

Well, as a Missourian I can tell you that Akin has lost his early polling lead and is now close to ten points behind Sen. McCaskill. That most certainly will transfer, because Ryan supports that statement made by Akin through legislation set to redefine the term rape. The one absolutely has much to do with the other. Akin was being cruel and slighting women in the most injurious manner. If your vague allusion to statements made by Biden is in reference to "them putting blacks in chains", that is actual fact if you take it in the context of our US Congress having to vote to re-ratify the voter protection act, as well as all the other jim crow ending laws. Every seven years I believe, every black person in the US has to wait on pins and needles to find out whether or not they will still have voter protection to guarantee their rights. Biden doesn't owe an apology because that is fact, so what are you saying?
