Akin's Rape Remark Draws Tea Party Pressure: Will Akin's Comment Cost Romney Missouri's Electoral Votes?

Mainstream media has dog-piled on senatorial candidate Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) for his comment about "legitimate rape." Akin has apologized for his comment, but the media will not let it pass, which has caused many Republicans and Tea Party members to put pressure on Akin to drop out of the race.

Some polls suggest that Akin's comment may adversely affect Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Missouri. Voters may show up to vote against Akin and Republicans may not show up to vote for Akin. Both of these actions could increase the votes for Obama and give Missouri's electoral votes to Obama.

"I've really made a couple of serious mistakes here that were just wrong, and I need to apologize for those," Akin said. Do you think Akin's comments will give Missouri's electoral votes to Obama -- and hurt Romney in the process?

ABCNEWS.GO.COM reports:
Pressure mounted on Rep.Todd Akin to quit his Missouri Senate race today despite his repeated refusals to step down over his incendiary comments about rape.

Romney is ahead in Missouri by at least 7 points in many polls ... and I seriously doubt this one particular incident, as regrettable as it is, is going to significantly change that. Especially in an election that will be predominantly about jobs.

In today's 24-hour news cycles, a lot will happen between now and early November that will push this whole Akin thing off the radar.

The liberals' attempts to score political points from this will not succeed. Is what Akin said any more despicable than what Biden said about Republicans wanting to re-enslave black people?

I don't think so. It was an atrocious accusation, and it was much worse than what Akin said.

Akin was just being stupid, and he's apologized for what he said. Biden was being absolutely hateful, and he hasn't apologized at all. Let's remember that, everyone.

If it's because of rape then it is understandable but still abortion is involving killing a human you're about the girl is about to give birth to so having an abortion usually makes the girl feel really guilty(if she has a conscience) because it's morally wrong.

Actaully, my religion has nothing to do with my views on abortion.

Akins should know better. He's a Republican, and as such, he is a target for the elite media. He should go away.

the only "accident" - was that Akin pulled the curtain back on the thinking of this RW radical GOP by using too graphic of language.

How do we know that? It's all there for the reading. In H.R. 3, co-authored by Paul Ryan and Akin; and in the GOP's platform for the upcoming convention in Tampa.

The GOP is not monolithic, and one of the bigger complaints I've seen about Romney from the right wing is that he's NOT like Akin. That said, yes, Ryan's record shows some troubling (to me) similarities. Placing a legal burden of proof on a rape victim to show she fought back hard enough for it to be considered "forcible" reeks of Dark Ages to me.

Obama is an opportunist and will take advantage of this the latest episode of "Miss Speaking". An apology is not enough, Congressman Akin needs to disappear. Rahm Emanuel once said "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste" and I believe this is the cornerstone of Obama's strategy. apology congressman disappear rahm emanuel crisis waste cornerstone obamas strategy

This won't hurt Romney/Ryan, but it might be one less (R) in the Senate, and every single one is needed to come to the magic number of 51 or more.

Besides, Teddy Kennedy, a murderer (called the moral compass of the Senate when he was there I heard, lol) and Bill Clinton was accused of rape, but oh no, they're Democrats!!

People see through the hypocrisy. This guy Akin didn't rape anybody, just dumb and totally flunked Biology 101. Maybe Akin was arguing that if you allowed abortion in the case of rape, you would get additional claims of rape from women who simply wanted an abortion. Or, maybe also in his weird phrasing he meant that when there's a rape, the woman will most likely get immediate medical help and they would make sure no pregnancy would take place through medication intervention, etc,, but he did say, "The body has its ways, which is totally ridiculous.

    Who the hell knows.

If he doesn't want to drop out, the people of Missouri will decide at the ballot box.

Romney and Ryan even called for Akin to step aside and let the number 2 challenger take over. This won't have any effect on Romney-Ryan.

Abortion is NOT about religious freedom! It's about saving the life of an unborn child with a soul. Having pointed that important fact out. I would never ask a woman not to abort a child if she was raped.

What a stupid thing for Obama to say.

Obama is not right. Allowing any woman to painfully kill an unborn baby for whatever reason she wants is not right. Even if the cause of the pregnancy is rape the baby inside the stomach is still human and if the woman can't take care of it then she can offer it for adaption.
